vimshottari antardasha

Saturn Mahadasha, Jupiter Antardasha (Shani–Guru)

2 years 6 months 12 days (classical) · 925 days (solar) · sub-period 9 of 9 in a 19-year mahadasha

The Jupiter antardasha is the ninth of the nine sub-periods inside the Saturn mahadasha, and the last of them — it closes the Saturn mahadasha, which gives way to the Mercury mahadasha. 19 × 16 ÷ 120 makes the Saturn–Jupiter sub-period 2 years 6 months 12 days on the classical year of twelve thirty-day months, which is how the texts state it, or 925 days on the solar year of 365.2425 days that the dasha calculator uses.

Jupiter’s turn in the Saturn mahadasha comes only after Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, the Sun, the Moon, Mars and Rahu have run, which takes 16 years 5 months 18 days. Nothing of the Saturn mahadasha is left once the Saturn–Jupiter sub-period ends.

Jupiter’s 16 years make every Jupiter antardasha 16/120 of the mahadasha containing it, so inside Saturn’s 19 years the Saturn–Jupiter sub-period is the fifth-longest of the nine.

The Nine Pratyantardashas of Saturn–Jupiter

A pratyantardasha of Saturn–Jupiter is 19 × 16 × its own lord’s years ÷ 14,400, and the nine run in cycle order starting from Jupiter. Venus’s is the longest inside Saturn–Jupiter at 152 days and the Sun’s the shortest at 46 days, on the classical year and rounded to the day.

How Saturn and Jupiter Stand to Each Other

On the natural friendship table, Saturn and Jupiter each count the other neutral. The Saturn–Jupiterrelationship is mutual, so it reads the same from either lord.

Counted between the signs they own, Sagittarius is the 12th from Saturn’s Capricorn, Pisces is the 3rd from Saturn’s Capricorn, Sagittarius is the 11th from Saturn’s Aquarius and Pisces is the 2nd from Saturn’s Aquarius. Whatever the ascendant, the houses Saturn rules and the houses Jupiter rules sit at those same distances from each other in the chart, so the Saturn–Jupiter sub-period always joins lordships that far apart.

Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn, a sign Saturn owns. In the Saturn–Jupiter sub-period, then, one lord's dignity is placed on the other’s ground.

The Same Pair the Other Way Round: Jupiter–Saturn

19 × 16 equals 16 × 19, so the Saturn antardasha of the Jupiter mahadasha is exactly as long as Saturn–Jupiter: 2 years 6 months 12 days. Nothing else about Jupiter–Saturn matches. It is the second sub-period of Jupiter’s 16 years rather than the ninth of Saturn’s 19; it opens after 2 years 1 month 18 days of the Jupiter mahadasha, against 16 years 5 months 18 days here; and its pratyantars start from Saturn instead of Jupiter.

What the Texts Assign to Saturn and Jupiter

The karaka list the tables give Saturn, the mahadasha lord, is karma, labour, servants, iron, coal and delay itself; for Jupiter, the lord of the Saturn–Jupiter sub-period, it is children, teachers and gurus, higher learning and dharma. Parashari practice reads the sub-period through the houses each of the two owns and occupies in the birth chart, and through where Jupiter stands counted from Saturn there. None of that is a forecast, and this page makes none: without a chart, Saturn–Jupiter is a length and a position, and the 2 years 6 months 12 days above is the whole of what can be said about it in general.

A birth with the Moon in Pushya, Anuradha or Uttara Bhadrapada opens life inside the Saturn mahadasha itself, part-way through, and whether the Saturn–Jupiter sub-period is still ahead depends on how far the Moon had gone into the nakshatra. For a birth in Punarvasu, Vishakha or Purva Bhadrapada, the Jupiter mahadasha comes first, and the Saturn mahadasha is the next one.

The Other Sub-Periods of the Saturn Mahadasha

The full table for the Saturn mahadasha, with where each sub-period opens and closes, is on the Saturn mahadasha page. How the Saturn mahadasha is read as a whole is in our Saturn mahadasha article, and the system itself in Vimshottari dasha explained. This page in Hindi: शनि महादशा में गुरु अंतर्दशा.

When does Saturn–Jupiter run in your chart?

The dates come from the Moon’s longitude at birth. The calculator gives them; a pandit reads what the two lords hold in your chart.
