Vedic astrology, or Jyotish Shastra, is the Indian astrological system rooted in the Vedanga Jyotisha — the astronomical limb of the Vedic corpus. It differs from Western astrology in three concrete ways: it uses the sidereal zodiac rather than the tropical one, so the two disagree by roughly 24 degrees of ayanamsa and your Vedic sign is usually not the sign you would name as yours; it reads the Moon sign as primary rather than the Sun sign; and it divides the sky into 27 nakshatras alongside the 12 signs. It works with 9 grahas — the seven visible bodies plus Rahu and Ketu, which are the Moon's two orbital nodes rather than physical planets — across 12 bhavas or houses.

A Kundli, or Janam Kundali, is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. It records which of the 12 houses each graha occupied, the Ascendant, your Moon sign and nakshatra, and the sequence of Vimshottari dasha periods that divides your life into planetary chapters. Almost every other reading depends on it: marriage matching, Mangal dosha, Sade Sati timing, gemstone selection and muhurta all read off the birth chart. Birth time matters more than people expect — the Ascendant moves through a full sign roughly every two hours, so an error of an hour or more can shift the entire house structure.

Sade Sati is the roughly 7.5-year stretch during which Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses counted from your natal Moon sign. Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac and so spends about 2.5 years in each sign, which is where the three phases and the 7.5-year total come from — and why it returns roughly every 30 years, typically two or three times in a life. The classical reading is that it is demanding rather than destructive: it is associated with delay, added responsibility and forced discipline, and the standard remedies are Hanuman Chalisa recitation, Saturday fasting, and service to the elderly and the poor.

Mangal Dosh, also called Manglik or Kuja Dosha, is the placement of Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house — five of the twelve houses, which means Mars falls in one of them in roughly five charts out of twelve. On that broad definition it is common rather than exceptional, which is the first thing worth knowing about it. The classical concern is friction and ego conflict in marriage, and the classics list as many cancellations as they do afflictions: Mars in its own sign or in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn, an aspect from Jupiter, both partners being Manglik, or the couple being past their early thirties. Mangal Dosh also sits entirely outside Guna Milan, so a pair can score 30 of 36 guna and still need this checked separately.
