The japa count is fixed rather than arbitrary: 11,000 for Moon, between 7,000 for the Sun and 23,000 for Saturn. Larger figures are a purascharana — japa, then homa at a tenth of it, then tarpana at a tenth of that.

Bilva leaves
The offering Shiva worship cannot do without. For a mantra japa they are offered one leaf per hundred repetitions in some traditions, which is how the count becomes visible.
Rudraksha mala
The count is kept on it. 1,25,000 repetitions is over eleven hundred turns of a 108-bead mala, which is why a purascharana of this size is shared between reciters or spread across days rather than attempted in a sitting.
Amrit (holy water)
The mantra asks to be released from death as a cucumber is released from its stem, and the water poured over the linga is the mrit-sanjivani — the same word the mantra turns on.
