The five limbs
Worth reading once, because every dated page in this section assumes it. Four of the five are astronomical positions; the fifth is the weekday, and it is in the list for a practical reason rather than a symbolic one.
Tithi
The lunar day, and the one most people mean when they ask what the date is in the Hindu calendar. It is defined by the angle between the Moon and the Sun: every 12° of separation is one tithi, so thirty of them make a lunar month — fifteen as the Moon waxes (Shukla Paksha) and fifteen as it wanes (Krishna Paksha). Because the Moon's speed varies, a tithi is not a fixed length; it runs anywhere from about 19 to 26 hours, which is why it does not line up with the civil day and why an almanac has to pick a convention. Ours is the tithi current at sunrise.
Nakshatra
The lunar mansion. The sidereal zodiac is divided into 27 arcs of 13°20′, each named, and the nakshatra is whichever one holds the Moon. This is the oldest of the five divisions and the one most Vedic muhurat actually turns on — Tara Bala is counted in nakshatras, not rashis. A nakshatra is further divided into four padas of 3°20′, which is what naming traditions and finer chart work use.
Yoga
The sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes, divided into 27 parts of 13°20′ each. Nothing to do with the physical practice that shares the word. It advances more steadily than the tithi because it combines both luminaries' motion, and a handful of the 27 — Vyaghata, Parigha, Vaidhriti and a few others — are conventionally avoided for beginnings.
Karana
Half a tithi, so 6° of elongation. Sixty run through a lunar month, drawn from a set of eleven names: seven that repeat eight times over and four fixed ones that appear once each around the new Moon. Vishti, also called Bhadra, is the one traditionally avoided.
Vara
The weekday, and the only limb that is not an astronomical position. Each is ruled by a graha — Sunday by the Sun, Monday by the Moon, and so on. It earns its place because it is what decides which eighth of the day Rahu Kaal occupies, so the most widely observed inauspicious window in Indian practice is a function of the weekday and the day's length rather than of the clock.
What a panchang decides, and what it does not
A panchang is a table of positions. It tells you where the Sun and Moon are and, by long convention, which sub-periods of the day are conventionally avoided. It does not tell you how your day will go, and no page in this section will claim to.
The reason is arithmetic rather than modesty. Six of the twelve houses counted from a rashi are classed favourable, so roughly half of all rashis are in a favourable position on any date. Three of the nine taras are rejected, so a third of birth stars are excluded on any date. Combine the two filters and about a third of days survive for any one person — which is a useful thing to know and a useless thing to turn into a percentage. Turning it into “today is 82% auspicious” would be presentation, not calculation.
Real muhurat selection narrows further: the tithi, the karana, the yoga, and finally the person’s own chart and running dasha. A page keyed to a date knows none of the last three. What it can do honestly is give you the positions, show you both classical filters, and be clear about where the calculation stops.
Why the dated pages give a degree and not just a nakshatra
A printed almanac tells you which nakshatra the Moon is in and stops there. That is enough for Tara Bala, which is counted in nakshatras — but not for Chandra Bala, which is counted in rashis. A nakshatra spans 13°20′ and a rashi spans 30°, so the two grids do not line up: nine of the 27 nakshatras straddle a sign boundary, and on roughly a third of days knowing the nakshatra leaves the rashi undecided. Every dated page here therefore computes the rashi from the Moon’s sidereal longitude and prints the degree, rather than inferring it.
The degree is worth reading as well as the sign. The Moon crosses a rashi in a little over two days, so a day that begins at 26° will not end in the same sign, and each dated page names the two sunrises the crossing falls between rather than a minute the once-a-day table cannot support.
One consequence shows up if you tally the dated pages: exactly one rashi is in Chandrashtama on any date, and over the 730 days covered here each rashi takes its turn for between 55 and 68 sunrises rather than the even 61 you might expect. That is not a rounding artefact. The Moon travels faster near perigee than near apogee, so it lingers in whichever rashi holds its apogee at the time — and the apogee itself circles the zodiac in 8.85 years, which is longer than this table.

What is a panchang?+
Pancha-anga — five limbs. It is a daily almanac giving five quantities: the tithi (lunar day), the nakshatra the Moon occupies, the yoga, the karana and the vara (weekday). Four of the five are positions of the Sun and Moon and change continuously through the day; the fifth is the weekday. Together they are what traditional muhurat is selected from.
Why does the panchang differ between websites and printed almanacs?+
Three reasons, all legitimate. First, place: sunrise, sunset and every window derived from them depend on latitude and longitude, so a panchang for New Delhi is not one for Chennai. Second, ayanamsa — the offset between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs — where Lahiri, Raman and Krishnamurti differ by enough to move a nakshatra boundary. Third, convention: a tithi can begin at any hour, so almanacs that name the tithi at sunrise and ones that name the tithi covering most of the day will sometimes disagree by one.
What is Rahu Kaal and how is it calculated?+
One-eighth of the interval from sunrise to sunset, treated as unsuited to beginning anything of consequence. Which eighth depends on the weekday. Because it is a fraction of the day's own length rather than a fixed clock time, it moves through the year and differs by city — which is why any source quoting a single Rahu Kaal for all of India is guessing.

The JPL DE421 ephemeris, with sidereal positions using the Lahiri ayanamsa, computed for New Delhi (28.6139°N, 77.209°E). The generated table covers 2026-01-01 to 2027-12-31, 730 days. As a cross-check, the nakshatra our own lunar series implies agrees with the tabulated value on 729 of the 730 days; the single disagreement sits 14 arcseconds from a nakshatra boundary.
