Where these dates come from

Station dates are computed from Keplerian orbital elements published by NASA JPL, by finding the instant each planet's apparent geocentric longitude stops increasing. They are checked against the JPL DE421 ephemeris: every station over 20242032 is reproduced, the worst disagreement being two and a half hours for Saturn and under fifteen minutes for Mercury.

A station can still fall either side of midnight, so a date here may differ by a day from another source, and roughly a quarter of these do sit within three hours of IST midnight. Signs are sidereal (Lahiri), as used throughout this site — a retrograde that a Western source places in Aries is usually in Pisces here, because the two zodiacs are currently just under one sign apart.

Rahu and Ketu are the Moon's mean nodes, which is what Indian panchangs reckon them by. They are retrograde permanently, so they are listed by the sign they are moving back through rather than by a window.

Understanding Planetary Retrogrades in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), a retrograde planet is called "Vakri Graha" — literally a planet that appears to move backward in the sky. While this is an optical illusion caused by the relative speeds of Earth and other planets, the astrological effects are considered very real and significant. Retrograde periods are times when the planet's energy turns inward, causing us to revisit, review, and reconsider matters related to that planet's domain.

Mercury retrograde is the most well-known, happening three to four times per year for about three weeks each time. During Mercury retrograde, communication breakdowns, technology glitches, travel delays, and misunderstandings are common. However, it's an excellent time for re-reading, re-planning, re-connecting with old friends, and completing unfinished projects. The key is to embrace the "re-" prefix in all activities.

Not every planet retrogrades every year

This is where most retrograde listings go wrong, and it is worth understanding rather than looking up. How often a planet turns retrograde is fixed by its synodic period — the time it takes Earth to lap it, or be lapped by it. Mercury's is 116 days, so it retrogrades three or four times a year. Saturn's is 378 days, so it retrogrades once a year and about two weeks later each time. Mars's is 780 days, roughly twenty-six months, which means Mars skips whole calendar years entirely — including 2026, which has no Mars retrograde at all. Jupiter's 399 days puts its four-month retrograde in a different part of the calendar each year, so in some years, 2026 among them, it lands twice.

The practical use of that is a check you can run on any retrograde list you are given: if it shows all five planets retrograde in every year, or shows Mars retrograde two years running, it was copied rather than calculated. The schedule above is generated from orbital elements each time it is built, which is why it reports the gaps as plainly as the windows.

Vakri Graha: The Vedic Perspective

Unlike Western astrology which views retrogrades primarily as challenging, Vedic astrology recognizes that retrograde planets are actually stronger in certain ways. A retrograde planet is closer to Earth, making its influence more intense and internalized. Jupiter retrograde, for instance, deepens spiritual wisdom, while Saturn retrograde intensifies karmic lessons. The key is understanding that retrograde energy is not "bad" — it's redirected inward for necessary growth and reflection.

Each retrograde phase has three stages: the pre-shadow (when effects begin subtly), the actual retrograde (peak intensity), and the post-shadow (gradual clearing). Our astrologers can analyze how specific retrogrades interact with your natal chart, revealing whether a particular retrograde will be challenging or actually beneficial for your personal planetary configuration.
