Numerology reduces a name or a date to a single digit and reads meaning into it. The two figures nearly every system starts with are the Life Path number, derived from the full date of birth, and the Destiny or Expression number, derived from the letters of the full name.
The Life Path is the sum of every digit in your birth date, reduced repeatedly until one digit remains. A birth on 14 August 1991 gives 1+4+8+1+9+9+1 = 33, then 3+3 = 6. Alongside it sit the Birth or Mulank number — the day of the month alone, reduced — and the Bhagyank, the full-date total. Indian practice leans heavily on the Mulank, Western practice on the Life Path.
The master numbers 11, 22 and 33
One convention is worth knowing because it changes results: 11, 22 and 33 are treated as master numbers and are not reduced. A total of 11 stays 11 rather than becoming 2, and 22 stays 22 rather than becoming 4.
Not every system observes this, which is one of the reasons two numerology sites can hand you different numbers for the same date. If a result here differs from one you have seen elsewhere, check whether the other reduced a master number — or whether it used a different letter-to-number table for the name.
Chaldean and Pythagorean give different answers
Name numerology depends entirely on which alphabet table is used, and there are two in wide circulation. The Pythagorean system maps A–I to 1–9, J–R to 1–9 again, and S–Z to 1–8 — a straightforward sequence. The Chaldean system assigns values by sound rather than alphabetical order, uses only 1 through 8, and reserves 9 as sacred, appearing only as a total.
Indian numerology, particularly in name correction work, generally follows Chaldean. Most Western material follows Pythagorean. Neither is a corrupted version of the other; they are separate traditions with separate tables, and comparing a Chaldean name number with a Pythagorean one is meaningless.
How numerology relates to Jyotish
In Indian practice the two are often read together, because the nine single digits are mapped to the nine grahas: 1 to the Sun, 2 to the Moon, 3 to Jupiter, 4 to Rahu, 5 to Mercury, 6 to Venus, 7 to Ketu, 8 to Saturn, 9 to Mars. A Mulank of 8 is read through Saturn, and a practitioner will then look at how Saturn actually sits in the birth chart.
That mapping is also where the honest limit lies. Numerology works from a date and a spelling; it has no access to birth time, place, house positions or dashas. It is a quick, suggestive layer, and it is at its most useful when read against a chart rather than instead of one.

How do I calculate my Life Path number?
Add every digit of your full date of birth and reduce the total to a single digit. For 14 August 1991: 1+4+8+1+9+9+1 = 33, and 3+3 = 6. The exception is master numbers — if the total reduces to 11, 22 or 33, most systems leave it as it is rather than reducing further.
What is the difference between Mulank and Bhagyank?
The Mulank, or Birth number, comes from the day of the month alone, reduced to one digit — the 29th gives 2+9 = 11, then 2. The Bhagyank, or Destiny number, comes from the entire date of birth. Indian numerology tends to lead with the Mulank; Western material leads with the full-date Life Path.
Why do numerology sites give me different numbers?
Almost always one of two reasons. Either they use different alphabet tables for the name — Chaldean assigns values by sound and uses only 1 to 8, while Pythagorean runs straight through the alphabet — or they reduce master numbers where another system preserves them. Both are internally consistent; they are different traditions.
How does numerology connect to my birth chart?
