Before you start
The three birth details, and why each one matters
Almost every consultation that goes badly goes badly for the same dull reason: the chart was built on a guess. A Jyotish reading is not a conversation about your star sign, it is a conversation about a diagram of the sky at one moment, and the diagram needs three inputs. Getting them right before you open a session is the single highest-value thing you can do, and it costs nothing.
Date of birth
The easiest of the three, and the one most often recorded correctly. The date fixes where the Sun and the slower planets sat, and those move little enough over a day that a small error is survivable. Do check which calendar a remembered date came from: a family may have kept the tithi of a birth rather than the English date, and the two drift apart every year. Time of birth — the one that actually decides the reading
In Jyotish the lagna, or ascendant, is the degree of the zodiac standing on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, and the entire houses framework of the chart is measured from it. Here is the arithmetic that makes the birth time so unforgiving: the whole zodiac passes that horizon once in a day, so twelve signs spread across roughly twenty-four hours means a new sign comes up about every two hours. An error of two hours can therefore hand you a different lagna altogether, and when the lagna shifts, every house boundary shifts with it — the planet a practitioner would have read in one house is now sitting in the next one, and the reading built on top of that is about somebody else. The Moon compounds it from the other direction: it crosses the whole circle in a little over twenty-seven days, and the tradition divides that circle into twenty-seven nakshatras, which works out to the Moon changing nakshatra roughly once a day and moving several degrees in the space of a few hours.
So find the recorded time rather than the remembered one. A hospital record, a birth certificate, a note in a family diary or an old horoscope drawn up at the time all beat somebody's memory of the evening. If two sources disagree, bring both and say so.
Place of birth
A chart is cast from a particular horizon, not from a country, so the town is the unit that matters. Latitude and longitude decide which degree was rising at your birth time and where the house divisions fall, and longitude also carries the correction between clock time and local time. Give the town or city of birth and, if it is a small place, the district as well. If you were born abroad, say which country, because the time zone in force on that date is part of the calculation.
If the birth time is genuinely unknown
Say so. Do not round it to a convenient hour and hope, because a guessed time produces a chart that looks every bit as authoritative as a real one and quietly answers a different question. A practitioner who is told the time is missing has somewhere to go. Jyotish keeps techniques that do not depend on a birth time at all — the Moon's nakshatra and sign, which need only the date and a rough part of the day, and Prashna, where the tradition casts the chart for the moment the question is asked rather than the moment the querent was born. Practitioners also use birth-time rectification, working backwards from events whose dates you do know to narrow the possible lagna. None of that can happen if we are handed a fabricated time as though it were a real one.
Check your own details first, for free
You do not need a session to find out whether your details produce a chart that looks right. As our editorial policy discloses, those calculations use a Lahiri-type ayanamsa, which is the sidereal convention standard in Indian astrology, over positions checked against NASA/JPL’s DE421 ephemeris — so a chart you generate here should agree with one drawn up by a practitioner using the same convention. If it does not, that disagreement is itself worth raising at the start of your session.
Mechanics
What actually happens when you open a session
The order of events is worth knowing in advance, because two of the steps can stop you and both are easier to deal with before you have a question typed out.
- 01You need to be signed in. If you are not, the session page sends you to log in and brings you back to the same astrologer afterwards, so nothing is lost. If a saved session has gone stale you will be asked to sign in again.
- 02You need wallet balance before the session opens, not after it ends. Our Terms of Service state this plainly, and the page enforces it: if the balance is short, the session does not begin at all, and you get a recharge prompt showing your current balance and a link straight to your wallet. Nothing is charged for the attempt.
- 03You choose whom to open it with from the directory, and the per-minute rate shown on that profile is the rate for that session. Rates differ from one practitioner to another, so the profile is the number that counts, not a headline figure.
- 04The session opens in its own tab and the meter starts. The running cost and the balance you see are figures our server returns while the session is live — your browser does not compute them, which means the number in front of you and the number you are actually being charged cannot drift apart.
- 05You end it. There is no minimum duration and no notice period; closing the session stops the charge. If the balance runs out first, the session closes itself and says so in the transcript rather than continuing silently into a debt.
When something goes wrong mid-session
A low balance is flagged before it becomes a problem, so you get the chance to top up rather than being cut off in the middle of a sentence. If your balance does reach zero, the session ends and the transcript records that it ended for that reason. If the session cannot be opened at all — a listing that has been withdrawn, a page reached from a stale link — you will get a message saying so instead of a spinner, and the right move is to pick another practitioner from the directory.
Your session history is kept in your profile, and every debit and recharge is itemised in your wallet transaction list. If you ever need to raise something about a session, those two pages are where the details you will be asked for actually live.
The wallet
How payment works, in plain terms
This is a prepaid wallet, not a subscription and not a bill. You put money into the wallet, the per-minute charge for a session is drawn from that balance, and when the balance is gone the sessions stop. Nothing recurs, there is no card kept on file to be charged next month, and there is no minimum recharge to unlock a rate.
Recharges go through Razorpay. The order is created and the payment signature is verified on our server rather than in your browser, and as our privacy policy states, we do not store your complete card or bank account details on our servers — the payment instrument stays with the gateway. On the wallet page you can pick one of the preset amounts or type your own, and the same page lists every transaction on the account so a recharge and a session debit can be told apart afterwards.
Two distinctions are worth holding on to. The first is that promotional and signup credits are credits and not cash: our refund policy is explicit that bonus credits are non-refundable in money, while a recharge you have not spent is refundable, and a recharge you have partly spent is refundable down to the unused balance. The second is that a per-minute rate is set by the practitioner, so the browse page lets you filter by band — Budget up to ₹15/min, Standard ₹16-30/min and Premium above that — and the rate you agree to is whichever one is printed on the profile you opened.
If a session did not deliver what you needed
Read the refund policy for the grounds and the windows — they are set out there rather than paraphrased here, so that there is one version of them. What we can tell you is how to ask so that the request can actually be processed: write to support@livepanditji.com, or message the WhatsApp number on our contact page, and include the astrologer's name as shown on their profile, the date and time of the session, your wallet ID, and a sentence about what happened. A request with those four things in it can be checked against the record straight away; one without them turns into a round of correspondence first.
Asking well
A question a chart can answer, and one it cannot
Because you are paying by the minute, the shape of your first message decides most of what you get. “Will I be happy?” spends the session on definitions. “I have two offers, one in my own city and one abroad, and I have to answer by the end of next month — what does my chart say about the move?” gives a practitioner a decision, a timeframe and a subject, which is everything needed to start looking at the relevant houses and the current planetary period.
Three things make a question workable:
- —One decision, not five. If you have several, say which one is most urgent and hold the rest; a session that tries to cover a whole life covers none of it.
- —A timeframe. Classical Jyotish treats timing through dasha periods and transits, so “in the next six months” is a question the tradition has machinery for in a way that “one day” is not.
- —What you have already tried. It stops the session being spent on advice you have already taken, and it tells the practitioner which part of the situation you actually cannot see.
And it is worth being straight about the other side of the line. Our Terms of Service state that a consultation here is for guidance and is not a substitute for licensed medical, legal, financial or psychological advice, and that astrologers on the platform are independent practitioners whose readings we do not guarantee the accuracy of. A practitioner who is asked to make a diagnosis, settle a legal position or direct an investment is expected to hand the question back and name the professional it belongs to — and if you are ever told a ritual or a stone should stand in place of seeing a doctor, that is a conduct problem we want reported, not a reading. Nor can any practitioner tell you what another adult is privately thinking or decide someone else's choice for them.
Privacy, consent and the transcript
Our privacy policy sets out that the birth details you give are shared only with the astrologer you consult and are never sold on, that consultations are confidential and practitioners are bound by confidentiality undertakings, and that you may ask for a copy of your data or for your account to be deleted by writing to support@livepanditji.com. Our Terms of Service separately prohibit recording a consultation without the consent of both parties, which cuts in your favour as much as anybody's. Practically: nobody here will ever ask you for your password, a one-time passcode or a card number, so treat any message that does as fraudulent no matter whose name is on it.
