The 12 Houses of Vedic astrology

A birth chart is read twice: once for the planets, and once for the twelve bhavas they sit in. The planets describe how something happens; the houses decide what it happens to. Each of the twelve below covers a distinct department of life, from the body itself in the 1st to final release in the 12th.

How Houses Are Classified

Houses are not read in isolation — they belong to groups, and the group decides how a planet behaves there. This is why Saturn in the 10th builds a career while Saturn in the 4th unsettles a home: the 10th is an Upachaya house and the 4th is not. The same four groupings explain most apparent contradictions in classical readings.

Kendra (angular)

The pillars of the chart. Planets here act with force and visibility; their lords are the strongest karakas in the horoscope.

Trikona (trine)

The auspicious trine — dharma, merit and fortune. The 9th is rated the most benefic house of all.

Dusthana (difficult)

Houses of disease, upheaval and loss. Benefics placed here lose some of their own good, but malefic house lords sitting in them form Vipreet Raja Yoga.

Upachaya (growing)

Malefics — Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu and the Sun — gain strength here and give their constructive side instead of obstruction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the 12 houses in Vedic astrology?
The 12 houses, or bhavas, divide the birth chart into twelve areas of life, starting from the ascendant (Lagna). In order they govern: the self, wealth and speech, siblings and courage, home and mother, children and creativity, disease and enemies, marriage and partnership, longevity and sudden events, fortune and dharma, career, gains, and finally loss and liberation.
Which house is the most important in a birth chart?
The 1st house (Lagna) is structurally the most important, because it is the only house that is both a Kendra and a Trikona, and because every other promise in the chart is filtered through the body and vitality it describes. For worldly fortune specifically, the 9th house is rated the most auspicious.
What is the difference between a house and a sign in astrology?
A sign (rashi) is a 30-degree division of the zodiac and does not move. A house (bhava) is an area of life, and which sign occupies which house depends entirely on the ascendant at the moment of birth. The natural zodiac — house 1 as Aries, house 2 as Taurus and so on — is called the Kaal Purush and is only the default reference, not any individual's chart.
Which houses are considered bad in Vedic astrology?
The 6th, 8th and 12th are the dusthanas, associated with disease, upheaval and loss. The classification is about the nature of the matters they rule, not a verdict — the 6th also gives victory over enemies, the 8th gives longevity and research ability, and the 12th gives moksha. A malefic house lord placed in another malefic house forms Vipreet Raja Yoga, which reverses the difficulty into gain.
How do I know which planet rules which house in my chart?
Find your ascendant sign, place it as the 1st house, then count the signs in order. The planet that rules the sign falling in a given house becomes that house's lord, and its strength and placement determine whether the house delivers. A free kundli will calculate the ascendant and all twelve house lords for you.
