3rd House (Sahaja Bhava)

The third bhava is a place in a chart, not a rashi. Which rashi actually falls there — and therefore which graha becomes the lord of your 3rd house — depends only on the ascendant, and it is settled by counting two signs forward from it. Find your lagna in the first column below and the rest of the row is your 3rd house: the rashi in it, the graha that owns it, and the graha the classical texts place at exaltation in that rashi. Every cell is counted from the sign order at build time rather than tabulated by hand.

All twelve rashis appear in that column and none appears twice, which is the whole reason a bhava cannot be identified with a rashi: for exactly one ascendant in twelve, your 3rd house is any given sign. Only the Aries ascendant reproduces the Kalapurusha assignment this page opens with, and it reproduces it in all twelve bhavas at once, because that is what the natural zodiac is: the chart of a lagna at the first degree of the first rashi.

For no ascendant at all does the lord of the lagna also own the 3rd house, and the reason is arithmetic rather than doctrine: the two rashis a dual ruler holds sit an even number of signs apart. Counted across the twelve, the coincidence is available only in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th bhavas, and this is not one of them.

Two further readings fall straight out of the last two columns, and both are traditional attributions rather than findings. One ascendant — Scorpio — puts the exaltation rashi of its own lagna lord in the 3rd house, a configuration classical texts read as the ruler of the whole chart finding its best ground in this department of life. two ascendants — Leo and Aquarius — put its lagna lord's debilitation rashi here instead, which the same texts read as the chart's ruler standing on its weakest ground in this bhava. Neither is a verdict on a chart: a dignity is one factor among the several a reading weighs, and no page can weigh them without a birth time.

A bhava is never read on its own. It is read as a member of several classical families at once, and the families are what explain why one graha is welcome in a house and another is not. Membership below is worked out from the number 3 rather than looked up, so the third bhava appears in every family that contains it and in none that does not.

  Each of these falls away from an angle. Classical texts read them as bhavas of effort, movement and letting go rather than of establishment, and this family is the clearest reason a bhava can be strong in what it signifies while being a hard place for a graha to stand: the 9th is counted the most auspicious house in the chart and is cadent all the same.

  The third purushartha group: desire, and the people it reaches toward. Siblings and peers in the 3rd, the partner in the 7th, friends and the wider circle in the 11th. The tradition reads the group for what a person wants from others rather than for what they are given.

• Upachaya (the growing houses)

  The growing houses. The tradition holds that the natural malefics gain here and give their constructive side rather than their obstructive one, which is the standard explanation for why one graha is read as an asset in one bhava and a burden in another without changing its own nature. The classification describes the house and not the worth of a chart.

The third bhava is outside seven of the families on this list — Kendra, Panapara, Dharma trikona, Artha trikona, Moksha trikona, Dusthana, Maraka — and an absence is worth as much as a membership when a chart is being read: a doctrine that belongs to a family this bhava is not in does not apply to it. The houses hub sets out all of them side by side with their members.

The Parashari tradition reads a bhava from three things: the graha that owns it, the grahas standing in it, and the drishti falling on it from elsewhere. The first two are above. This is the third, counted backward — for each graha, the bhava it has to occupy for its aspect to land on the 3rd. It is subtraction rather than doctrine, and it is why an empty third bhava is still being acted on.

Counted across all nine, drishti can reach the 3rd house from seven of the twelve bhavas — the 1st, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th — and from nowhere else. The 2nd, 4th, 5th and 10th cast no drishti on it at all, whatever stands in them. That absence is worth as much as the reach: a graha a reader has been told to worry about may be sitting in a bhava with no line of sight to the matter they are asking about. Drishti is only one of the three routes, though. A graha that owns this bhava acts on its matters from wherever in the chart it stands, and so does one sitting in the bhava itself — so a bhava the table calls blind is blind to the glance, and not to the whole horoscope. And two of the rows carry a hedge because the planet table does: Rahu and Ketu are given no aspect of their own by the classical texts, while many later authorities lend them the trinal aspect instead. Both readings are recorded and neither is settled here. The two rows do not match each other, and the mismatch is the table's rather than the tradition's: the planet entry for Rahu names the borrowed distances outright — the 5th, 7th and 9th — and the entry for Ketu names none, so one row carries them and the other does not. Read under the classical rule both are empty. Either way the count above is unaffected, and that is checked here rather than assumed: drop every contested row and the 3rd house is still reached from the same seven bhavas, because Jupiter already casts the three distances the later reading lends the nodes.

Classical technique treats any bhava as a lagna in its own right and counts the twelve again from there. That is one line of arithmetic — count forward, inclusive of both ends — and it is what lets a reading say something about the third bhava's own supports rather than only about the third bhava. Every number in the table is counted from 3 at build time.

Bhavat bhavam is the row marked above: the third counted again from the third, which lands on the fifth bhava. The tradition reads that bhava as the support of this one, on the reasoning that the same distance repeated describes the same kind of matter one step further out. Later commentators apply the technique chiefly to the angles and treat it as a secondary confirmation rather than as a rule in itself, so it is given here as a classical method and not as a conclusion. The same counting is what produces the rest of the table: reckoned from here, the eighth is the tenth bhava and the twelfth is the second, and a reading that ignores those two is reading this bhava without its liabilities.
