Ratna Shastra
Vedic Gemstones by Rashi
A gemstone works by strengthening one graha — which is exactly why it is the one remedy that can backfire. Wearing the stone of a planet that rules a difficult house for your ascendant amplifies the wrong thing. Use the rashi table below as your starting point, then confirm against your own chart before you buy anything.

Rashi here means your Moon sign, the sign most people know as “their” rashi. A full recommendation is made from the ascendant and the running dasha, so treat this as the general rule rather than a prescription.
The Navaratna: One Stone per Graha
Before gems were assigned to signs they were assigned to planets — the nine navaratna. Every rashi recommendation in the table above is just this list read through the sign’s ruler, and a chart-based recommendation may pick any of the nine regardless of your rashi.
Gems That Must Not Be Combined
Two stones of hostile planets worn together are said to cancel each other at best and create internal conflict at worst. These are the pairs named most often:
- Blue Sapphire + Ruby — Saturn and the Sun are natural enemies — the classic warning pair.
- Blue Sapphire + Pearl — Saturn against the Moon; traditionally held to unsettle the mind.
- Blue Sapphire + Red Coral — Saturn against Mars — two malefics pulling in opposite directions.
- Diamond + Yellow Sapphire — Venus and Jupiter are enemies in the standard friendship table.
- Diamond + Ruby / Pearl — Venus against the Sun and Moon.
- Emerald + Pearl — Mercury and the Moon are hostile despite both being gentle grahas.
- Hessonite / Cat's Eye + Pearl — The nodes against the Moon — the combination behind Grahan dosha.
That is the selection in circulation rather than the whole rule. Graha friendship is not symmetric — of the twenty-one pairs, eleven rate each other differently in the two directions — so the complete set is nine pairs, not seven. Each stone’s own page carries the two-way table: Ruby, Pearl, Red Coral, Emerald, Yellow Sapphire, Diamond, Blue Sapphire.
Before You Buy
- Ask for a lab certificate stating the stone is natural and untreated. Heat-treated and glass-filled stones are common at the low end, and treatment is held to nullify the effect.
- Fix the weight before you fix the price. Roughly one ratti per ten kilograms of body weight is the usual guideline, with three to five ratti as a practical minimum.
- Insist on an open-backed setting so the stone touches skin.
- Trial-wear Blue Sapphire and Hessonite for three to seven days first — these two are the ones tradition says to test.
- Start with an upratna if the primary stone is beyond budget. A milder authentic stone beats a treated expensive one.
- Have the planet identified from a chart, not from a shop counter. The stone is the last step, not the first.

The rashi table is the general rule. A verified astrologer reads your ascendant, house lords and dasha to say which graha actually needs strengthening — and, just as often, which stone you should not wear.
