Vedic Gemstone · The Sun Stone
Ruby (Manik)
माणिक्य · strengthens the Sun, which owns Leo
The short answer
Manik is worn to strengthen the Sun, which governs soul, ego, vitality, leadership and father. Whether it helps you turns on which houses the Sun owns counted from your ascendant, and that changes twelve times over: ruby is the right stone for three of the twelve ascendants and the wrong one for three, and it is neither indicated nor forbidden for the remaining six. The table below is the whole of that answer.
Ruby From All Twelve Ascendants
The Sun owns Leo, so from each ascendant that sign lands on different houses — and the houses are what decide whether ruby helps. This is the same stone read twelve times over, reaching four different verdicts.
| Ascendant | the Sun owns | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | the 5th | safe to wear |
| Taurus | the 4th | neither indicated nor forbidden |
| Gemini | the 3rd | neither indicated nor forbidden |
| Cancer | the 2nd | neither indicated nor forbidden |
| Leo | the 1st | its own sign — the primary stone |
| Virgo | the 12th | avoid |
| Libra | the 11th | neither indicated nor forbidden |
| Scorpio | the 10th | neither indicated nor forbidden |
| Sagittarius | the 9th | safe to wear |
| Capricorn | the 8th | avoid |
| Aquarius | the 7th | neither indicated nor forbidden |
| Pisces | the 6th | avoid |
Trikona lordship — the 1st, 5th or 9th — is what makes a graha a functional benefic for an ascendant, and its stone safe. Dusthana lordship — the 6th, 8th or 12th — does the opposite. Owning both an angle and a trine makes it the yogakaraka. Every row links to the full reading for that ascendant.
What Ruby Must Not Be Worn With
The usual advice is a flat list of forbidden pairs, and it hides the thing that matters: graha friendship runs in two directions and the two directions often disagree. Eleven of the twenty-one pairs rate each other differently depending on which one you ask. Here is ruby against the other six, both ways.
| Stone | the Sun rates it | It rates the Sun | Together? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pearl | friend | friend | Permitted |
| Red Coral | friend | friend | Permitted |
| Emerald | neutral | friend | Permitted |
| Yellow Sapphire | friend | friend | Permitted |
| Diamond | enemy | enemy | No — mutual enmity |
| Blue Sapphire | enemy | enemy | No — mutual enmity |
Diamond and Blue Sapphire are hostile in both directions, which is the unambiguous case. A ruby may be worn alongside pearl, red coral, emerald and yellow sapphire without conflict.
Care: Ruby strengthens the Sun, so it is not advised for anyone with a strongly afflicted Sun-Saturn or Sun-Rahu combination without a chart reading first.
Judging Quality Before You Buy
Ruby should glow rather than sit flat — the red should look lit from inside under daylight. Almost all commercial ruby is heat treated, which is generally accepted; glass-filled or lead-filled ruby is not, and is common at low prices.
- Colour to look for
- Pigeon-blood red through pinkish red
- Origin
- Burmese (Mogok) is the classical premium; Mozambique now supplies most good commercial stones; Thai runs darker
- Indicative price
- ₹3,000 – ₹1,00,000+ per ratti; Burmese unheated is a different market entirely
- Upratna (substitute)
- Red Garnet — the same graha at a far milder strength, and the usual choice where ruby is contraindicated or out of budget.
Prices move with origin, clarity, treatment and the market — treat the band as a sanity check on a quote, not a valuation. Ask for a lab report that names the species and discloses any treatment: what counts as acceptable treatment differs by stone, so a certificate that simply says “natural” is not the one to accept.
How to Wear It
- Fix the weight first — roughly one ratti per ten kilograms of body weight, three to five ratti as a practical minimum. Confirm whether your jeweller means the 0.9-carat ratti or the traditional 0.12-gram one.
- Set it in gold with the back left open so the stone rests on the skin. A closed bezel is held to block the graha.
- Wash the ring in raw milk, honey, ghee, curd and clean water, then place it before Surya.
- Chant ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः — Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah — 7,000 times, or have the japa performed for you.
- Wear it on the ring finger of the right hand, putting it on for the first time on Sunday morning.
- Fast on Sunday and watch what the stone does over the first thirty days.
Finger, metal and day follow the Sun and not your ascendant, so they are the same whichever sign you are reading this from.
The Sun, and What the Stone Is Actually For
A gemstone does one thing: it strengthens its graha. So ruby is only worth wearing if a stronger Sun is what your chart wants — and that means knowing what the Sun is responsible for in the first place.
- Classical nature
- Mild malefic — it scorches what it touches, but it is the atmakaraka of the chart
- Owns
- Leo
- Exalted
- Aries, deepest at 10°
- Debilitated
- Libra
- Moolatrikona
- Leo 0°–20°
- Mahadasha
- 6 years
- Karaka of
- Father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration
- In the body
- Heart, eyes, bones, head, and general vitality (ojas)
- Its nakshatras
- Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha
- Combustion
- Does not combust; it is the Sun that combusts others
The three nakshatras the Sun rules — Krittika, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha — matter because selecting a stone by janma nakshatra is the more precise of the two routes: a nakshatra spans 13°20′ against a sign's 30°, so it pins the birth Moon to a segment rather than to a whole sign. How much of any one sign that segment covers varies — padas of 3°20′, one to four of the nine a sign is built from — so the per-ascendant pages state it exactly. A birth under any of the three is a case for ruby that the sign table alone would not produce.
General Rules
- Pause for thirteen days after a death in the family and set the stone aside for that period.
- Do not wear a stone that has been worn by someone else, and do not pass yours on.
- Clean it monthly and re-energise it in moonlight or clean water.
- Replace it once it cracks, clouds or loses colour — tradition treats that as the stone having finished its work.
- If anything worsens sharply in the first thirty days, remove it and have the chart re-read.

Find Out If It Is Your Stone
The table above is the rule by ascendant. Whether ruby is right for you also depends on where the Sun actually sits, whether it is combust or retrograde, and which dasha you are running — which is a chart reading, not a table lookup.
