Where the 11th Lordship Comes From

The Sun owns Leo. Counting from Libra as the first house, Leo is the 11th — which is the whole of it. One sign, one house, so there is nothing to weigh against it.

The 11th is neither a trikona nor a dusthana, so the rule that decides most cases does not apply. Ruby is not contraindicated for Libra and it is not indicated either — it becomes relevant only if the Sun is specifically afflicted in the chart, or if a dasha of the Sun is running.

The Libra gemstone page states this as a single line — “Ruby — the Sun rules the 11th” — and lists it among the stones to avoid for this ascendant.

That is a stricter line than this page takes, and the difference is worth naming. The Libra page puts 11th-lordship on its avoid side, and it does so consistently — in all twelve places on the grid where a graha owns the 11th from an ascendant, its stone is on that ascendant's avoid list and never on its good one. The trikona and dusthana test this page runs says nothing about the 11th in either direction. On this combination there is a further reason to take the stricter reading seriously: it cannot share a hand with diamond, the Libra primary stone, in either direction, the Sun is debilitated in Libra and the Sun owns the badhaka house from here. Neither page overrules the other: the lordship does not forbid ruby, and nothing on this page is a case for wearing it without a reading.

Wearing It Alongside Diamond

Diamond is the Libra primary stone, because Venus rules Libra (Tula) and owns the 1st and the 8th from it. So the pairing a Libra native is most likely to consider is ruby with diamond, and whether that is allowed depends on how the Sun and Venus rate each other.

They are enemies in both directions. This is one of only two mutually hostile pairs among the twenty-one, and it is an unambiguous no: wear ruby or diamond, never the two together.

On ruby generally: Ruby strengthens the Sun, so it is not advised for anyone with a strongly afflicted Sun-Saturn or Sun-Rahu combination without a chart reading first.

The Sun in Libra Itself

House lordship is one axis and sign dignity is another, and for a Libra ascendant they do not always agree. Libra is where the Sun is debilitated. • Emerald (Mercury, 9th and 12th lord)

Saturn is the yogakaraka for a Libra ascendant, owning the 4th and the 5th, so blue sapphire is a genuine recommendation here rather than the hazard it is for most signs. Diamond with blue sapphire is the Libra combination; both grahas are friends.

If the appeal is ruby itself rather than the Sun, its upratna is red garnet — a substitute of the same graha with a far milder effect, which is the usual compromise where the primary stone is contraindicated.

The Ascendants Ruby Reads Differently For

The same stone is not the same advice from every ascendant, and ruby is a clear example. From Libra it is neither indicated nor forbidden.
