About these times. A hora is one twelfth of the daylight span, and a night hora one twelfth of the night, so the two are equal in length only at the equinoxes — at the June solstice a Delhi day hora runs about 70 minutes against a night hora’s 50, and in mid-December the two swap. The sunrise and sunset behind this chart are computed from the JPL DE421 ephemeris for New Delhi. The sequence of ruling planets is the same everywhere, but the boundaries shift with your longitude by up to about an hour, so treat the clock times as Delhi's and the order as yours.

What is Hora? Understanding Planetary Hours in Vedic Astrology

Hora is the ancient Vedic system of planetary hours that divides each day into 24 segments, each ruled by one of the seven classical planets. The word "Hora" derives from the Sanskrit "Ahoratra" (day and night), and this system has been used for thousands of years by Vedic astrologers to determine the most auspicious timing for important activities.

Unlike modern clock hours, Hora calculations are based on sunrise and sunset. The day (sunrise to sunset) is divided into 12 equal parts, and the night (sunset to next sunrise) into another 12 parts. The first hora of each day belongs to the ruling planet of that weekday — Sun rules Sunday, Moon rules Monday, Mars rules Tuesday, and so on.

How to Use the Hora Chart

Each planet's hora carries specific energies that favor certain activities. Jupiter Hora is considered the most auspicious for starting new ventures, religious ceremonies, marriages, and financial decisions. Venus Hora favors romance, artistic pursuits, and purchases of luxury items. Mercury Hora is ideal for business dealings, communication, writing, and intellectual work.

For challenging tasks requiring courage and determination, Mars Hora provides the necessary energy. Saturn Hora, while generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, is excellent for completing long-pending work, dealing with property matters, and activities requiring patience and discipline.

Hora vs. Muhurta: Key Differences

While both Hora and Muhurta deal with auspicious timing, they operate at different scales. Hora provides hourly guidance for everyday decisions — when to make a phone call, send an important email, or step out for business. Muhurta, on the other hand, is a comprehensive analysis considering multiple planetary factors for major life events like weddings, housewarming ceremonies, or starting a business. For daily planning, Hora offers quick, practical guidance that anyone can follow without complex astrological calculations.
