Surya Rashi: your sign in the sidereal zodiac

Your Vedic sun sign, or Surya Rashi, is the sidereal zodiac sign the Sun occupied when you were born. Most people in India already know a sun sign — from a magazine, an app, a school friend with a book — and a surprising number of them are carrying the Western one without realising the two systems give different answers.

In Jyotish the Sun signifies the atma: vitality, self-respect, authority, the father, and one's relationship with rank and recognition. It is the natural significator of the first house. It is not the primary reference for daily prediction the way it is in Western astrology, but it is far from decorative.

Why your Vedic sign is often one earlier

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the equinoxes — 0° Aries is defined as the position of the Sun at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the fixed stars. Because of the precession of the equinoxes, the two reference frames have been drifting apart for millennia and now differ by a little over 24°.

That offset is called the ayanamsa, and Lahiri is the value standardised in India. Since each sign spans 30°, any birth where the tropical Sun sat within the first 24° of a sign falls one sign earlier in the sidereal reckoning. That is most of each month, which is why so many people find their Vedic sign is the previous one.

Sankranti: the Vedic solar month

One consequence you can check against a calendar: sidereal sign changes fall mid-month, not around the 21st. The Sun's entry into a sign is called a Sankranti, and the best-known of them, Makar Sankranti, marks the Sun's entry into Capricorn around 14 January every year — a festival date, not an astrological footnote. Mesha Sankranti, the entry into Aries, falls around 14 April and opens the solar new year in several regional calendars.

So the Vedic solar months run roughly from the middle of one Gregorian month to the middle of the next. If your birthday falls in the first half of a month, expect your Vedic sun sign to differ from the Western one you may already know.

Where the sun sign fits in a real reading

Jyotish reads the Moon sign for the mind and daily prediction, and the Ascendant for the structure of the chart. The Sun's own territory is authority, career standing, health and vitality, the father, and matters involving government and institutions. An astrologer looks at the Sun closely for questions about recognition, promotion, or a strained relationship with a father figure.

What the Sun cannot do is carry a whole reading. A sun-sign horoscope divides the population into twelve groups and says the same thing to each — useful as entertainment, but no astrologer would work that way. The chart's houses, the Ascendant and the running dasha are what turn a sign into a statement about a person.

What this tool gives you

This calculator returns your sidereal sun sign with its element, ruling planet and general traits from your date of birth. The Sun takes about a month to cross a sign and moves close to one degree a day, so a date is enough to get this right except for births within a day of a Sankranti.

For anything beyond the sign itself — the house the Sun occupies, its dignity, whether it is combust or well aspected — you need a full chart cast for your birth time and place.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Vedic sun sign different from the one I've always known?

The sign you know is almost certainly the tropical, Western one. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is offset from the tropical by a little over 24° — the ayanamsa. Since signs are 30° wide, most birth dates land one sign earlier in the Vedic system. Both are internally consistent; they measure from different starting points.

What is Sankranti?

It is the Sun's entry into a new sidereal sign, and it marks the start of a Vedic solar month. Makar Sankranti, the Sun's entry into Capricorn, falls around 14 January; Mesha Sankranti, the entry into Aries, around 14 April. Because these fall mid-month, Vedic solar months run from about the middle of one Gregorian month to the middle of the next.

Does the Vedic sun sign matter if the Moon sign is primary?

Yes, for its own set of questions. The Sun is the significator of vitality, self-respect, authority, career standing and the father. An astrologer reads it closely for promotions, dealings with government and institutions, and health of the constitution. It simply is not the reference used for daily rashifal — that is the Moon.

Which sign should I use for my daily horoscope?

For Vedic rashifal, use your Moon sign. For Western horoscope columns, use your tropical Sun sign. Mixing them — reading a Vedic prediction under a Western sign — is the most common reason a horoscope feels like it is describing someone else entirely.
