The Sun owns Leo. Counting from Gemini as the first house, Leo is the 3rd — which is the whole of it. One sign, one house, so there is nothing to weigh against it.

The 3rd is neither a trikona nor a dusthana, so the rule that decides most cases does not apply. Ruby is not contraindicated for Gemini and it is not indicated either — it becomes relevant only if the Sun is specifically afflicted in the chart, or if a dasha of the Sun is running.

Wearing It Alongside Emerald

Emerald is the Gemini primary stone, because Mercury rules Gemini (Mithuna) and owns the 1st and the 4th from it. So the pairing a Gemini native is most likely to consider is ruby with emerald, and whether that is allowed depends on how the Sun and Mercury rate each other.

Why the Nakshatra Route Never Reaches Ruby for Gemini

Selecting a stone by janma nakshatra is the more precise route, because it pins the birth Moon to one nakshatra instead of a whole sign — and for Gemini it never arrives at ruby. Three nakshatras touch the sign: Mrigashira (Taurus 23°20′ – Gemini 6°40′, lord Mars), Ardra (Gemini 6°40′ – 20°00′, lord Rahu) and Punarvasu (Gemini 20°00′ – Cancer 3°20′, lord Jupiter). The Sun rules none of them, so no birth Moon anywhere in Gemini reaches ruby by that route — not one of the sign’s nine padas.

That is structural rather than a quirk of Gemini. The nakshatra lords run in a fixed cycle of nine, so any three consecutive nakshatras carry three different lords and a sign can reach at most three of the nine. Two of those nine are Rahu and Ketu, which have no stone among the seven, and the sign’s own lord is handled on Gemini’s own page rather than here — which leaves between three and five of the six stones paired with any given sign unreachable on this route.

Here the two routes agree, by different reasoning and across the whole sign: nothing in Gemini's three nakshatras points at ruby, and the 3rd from the ascendant argues against it as well. Agreement reached from two independent directions is worth more than either on its own.

What a Gemini Ascendant Should Wear Instead

A graha owning neither a trikona nor a dusthana from Gemini has no particular work to do for that ascendant, and the Sun is in exactly that position here. These stones do have work to do.

Mercury owning both the 1st and the 4th makes emerald unusually well suited to a Gemini ascendant — it strengthens the self and the home at once. Emerald with diamond is safe; emerald with pearl is not, since Mercury and the Moon are hostile.

If the appeal is ruby itself rather than the Sun, its upratna is red garnet — a substitute of the same graha with a far milder effect, which is the usual compromise where the primary stone is contraindicated.

The Ascendants Ruby Reads Differently For

The same stone is not the same advice from every ascendant, and ruby is a clear example. From Gemini it is neither indicated nor forbidden.
