Vedic Gemstone · The Jupiter Stone
Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj)
पुष्पराग · strengthens Jupiter, which owns Sagittarius and Pisces
The short answer
Pukhraj is worn to strengthen Jupiter, which governs wisdom, dharma, wealth, children and teachers. Whether it helps you turns on which houses Jupiter owns counted from your ascendant, and that changes twelve times over: yellow sapphire is the right stone for three of the twelve ascendants and the wrong one for three, with a genuinely split verdict for three more. It is ineffective rather than harmful for two through kendradhipati dosha, and neither indicated nor forbidden for the remaining one. The table below is the whole of that answer.
Yellow Sapphire From All Twelve Ascendants
Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces, so from each ascendant those signs land on different houses — and the houses are what decide whether yellow sapphire helps. This is the same stone read twelve times over, reaching six different verdicts.
| Ascendant | Jupiter owns | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | the 9th and the 12th | split verdict, needs the chart |
| Taurus | the 8th and the 11th | avoid |
| Gemini | the 7th and the 10th | kendradhipati dosha — ineffective |
| Cancer | the 6th and the 9th | split verdict, needs the chart |
| Leo | the 5th and the 8th | split verdict, needs the chart |
| Virgo | the 4th and the 7th | kendradhipati dosha — ineffective |
| Libra | the 3rd and the 6th | avoid |
| Scorpio | the 2nd and the 5th | safe to wear |
| Sagittarius | the 1st and the 4th | its own sign — the primary stone |
| Capricorn | the 3rd and the 12th | avoid |
| Aquarius | the 2nd and the 11th | neither indicated nor forbidden |
| Pisces | the 1st and the 10th | its own sign — the primary stone |
Trikona lordship — the 1st, 5th or 9th — is what makes a graha a functional benefic for an ascendant, and its stone safe. Dusthana lordship — the 6th, 8th or 12th — does the opposite. Owning both an angle and a trine makes it the yogakaraka. Every row links to the full reading for that ascendant.
What Yellow Sapphire Must Not Be Worn With
The usual advice is a flat list of forbidden pairs, and it hides the thing that matters: graha friendship runs in two directions and the two directions often disagree. Eleven of the twenty-one pairs rate each other differently depending on which one you ask. Here is yellow sapphire against the other six, both ways.
| Stone | Jupiter rates it | It rates Jupiter | Together? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ruby | friend | friend | Permitted |
| Pearl | friend | neutral | Permitted |
| Red Coral | friend | friend | Permitted |
| Emerald | enemy | neutral | No — one-way enmity |
| Diamond | enemy | neutral | No — one-way enmity |
| Blue Sapphire | neutral | neutral | Permitted |
Emerald and Diamond are one-way enmities — the kind a flat list flattens away. Tradition does not average the two directions: one-way enmity is enough to rule the pairing out. A yellow sapphire may be worn alongside ruby, pearl, red coral and blue sapphire without conflict.
Care: Widely regarded as the safest of the nine to wear, which is why it is over-prescribed. It still strengthens one specific graha and should match your chart.
Judging Quality Before You Buy
The most forgiving of the premium stones — good yellow sapphire is genuinely available at a fair price. Look for even colour with no zoning, eye-clean transparency and no milky cloud. Yellow topaz is often mis-sold as Pukhraj; they are different minerals and topaz is not the substitute for Jupiter.
- Colour to look for
- Lemon to warm golden yellow, evenly distributed
- Origin
- Ceylon (Sri Lanka) is the standard and the best value; Bangkok-treated stones are cheaper and usually heated
- Indicative price
- ₹2,000 – ₹30,000 per ratti
- Upratna (substitute)
- Citrine — the same graha at a far milder strength, and the usual choice where yellow sapphire is contraindicated or out of budget.
Prices move with origin, clarity, treatment and the market — treat the band as a sanity check on a quote, not a valuation. Ask for a lab report that names the species and discloses any treatment: what counts as acceptable treatment differs by stone, so a certificate that simply says “natural” is not the one to accept.
How to Wear It
- Fix the weight first — roughly one ratti per ten kilograms of body weight, three to five ratti as a practical minimum. Confirm whether your jeweller means the 0.9-carat ratti or the traditional 0.12-gram one.
- Set it in gold with the back left open so the stone rests on the skin. A closed bezel is held to block the graha.
- Wash the ring in raw milk, honey, ghee, curd and clean water, then place it before Brihaspati.
- Chant ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः — Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah — 19,000 times, or have the japa performed for you.
- Wear it on the index finger of the right hand, putting it on for the first time on Thursday morning.
- Fast on Thursday and watch what the stone does over the first thirty days.
Finger, metal and day follow Jupiter and not your ascendant, so they are the same whichever sign you are reading this from.
Jupiter, and What the Stone Is Actually For
A gemstone does one thing: it strengthens its graha. So yellow sapphire is only worth wearing if a stronger Jupiter is what your chart wants — and that means knowing what Jupiter is responsible for in the first place.
- Classical nature
- The greatest benefic — Jupiter expands whatever it touches, which is not always a favour
- Owns
- Sagittarius and Pisces
- Exalted
- Cancer, deepest at 5°
- Debilitated
- Capricorn
- Moolatrikona
- Sagittarius 0°–10°
- Mahadasha
- 16 years
- Karaka of
- Children, teachers and gurus, higher learning, dharma, wealth, and the husband in a woman's chart
- In the body
- Liver, fat and fat metabolism, the arterial system, thighs and hips
- Its nakshatras
- Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada
- Combustion
- Within 11° of the Sun
The three nakshatras Jupiter rules — Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada — matter because selecting a stone by janma nakshatra is the more precise of the two routes: a nakshatra spans 13°20′ against a sign's 30°, so it pins the birth Moon to a segment rather than to a whole sign. How much of any one sign that segment covers varies — padas of 3°20′, one to four of the nine a sign is built from — so the per-ascendant pages state it exactly. A birth under any of the three is a case for yellow sapphire that the sign table alone would not produce.
Why Sagittarius and Pisces Both Get Yellow Sapphire — but Not Identical Advice
Jupiter rules both Sagittarius and Pisces, so both inherit yellow sapphire as their primary stone and both are marked as its own sign in the table above. The recommendation is not equally strong for the two, and what splits them is the moolatrikona — the arc where a graha is strongest short of exaltation. For Jupiter that is Sagittarius 0°–10°. From Sagittarius the graha sits in its own moolatrikona; from Pisces it is in plain ownership. So yellow sapphire stands on marginally firmer ground for Sagittarius than for Pisces — and that is the only difference between the two. Everything else on this page applies to both equally.
General Rules
- Pause for thirteen days after a death in the family and set the stone aside for that period.
- Do not wear a stone that has been worn by someone else, and do not pass yours on.
- Clean it monthly and re-energise it in moonlight or clean water.
- Replace it once it cracks, clouds or loses colour — tradition treats that as the stone having finished its work.
- If anything worsens sharply in the first thirty days, remove it and have the chart re-read.

Find Out If It Is Your Stone
The table above is the rule by ascendant. Whether yellow sapphire is right for you also depends on where Jupiter actually sits, whether it is combust or retrograde, and which dasha you are running — which is a chart reading, not a table lookup.
