Vedic Gemstone · The Venus Stone
Diamond (Heera) or White Sapphire
वज्र · strengthens Venus, which owns Taurus and Libra
The short answer
Heera is worn to strengthen Venus, which governs love, marriage, beauty and luxury. Whether it helps you turns on which houses Venus owns counted from your ascendant, and that changes twelve times over: diamond is the right stone for five of the twelve ascendants and the wrong one for three, with a genuinely split verdict for one more, and it is neither indicated nor forbidden for the remaining three. The table below is the whole of that answer.
Diamond From All Twelve Ascendants
Venus owns Taurus and Libra, so from each ascendant those signs land on different houses — and the houses are what decide whether diamond helps. This is the same stone read twelve times over, reaching six different verdicts.
| Ascendant | Venus owns | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | the 2nd and the 7th | neither indicated nor forbidden |
| Taurus | the 1st and the 6th | its own sign — the primary stone |
| Gemini | the 5th and the 12th | split verdict, needs the chart |
| Cancer | the 4th and the 11th | neither indicated nor forbidden |
| Leo | the 3rd and the 10th | neither indicated nor forbidden |
| Virgo | the 2nd and the 9th | safe to wear |
| Libra | the 1st and the 8th | its own sign — the primary stone |
| Scorpio | the 7th and the 12th | avoid |
| Sagittarius | the 6th and the 11th | avoid |
| Capricorn | the 5th and the 10th | yogakaraka — the strongest standing there is |
| Aquarius | the 4th and the 9th | yogakaraka — the strongest standing there is |
| Pisces | the 3rd and the 8th | avoid |
Trikona lordship — the 1st, 5th or 9th — is what makes a graha a functional benefic for an ascendant, and its stone safe. Dusthana lordship — the 6th, 8th or 12th — does the opposite. Owning both an angle and a trine makes it the yogakaraka. Every row links to the full reading for that ascendant.
What Diamond Must Not Be Worn With
The usual advice is a flat list of forbidden pairs, and it hides the thing that matters: graha friendship runs in two directions and the two directions often disagree. Eleven of the twenty-one pairs rate each other differently depending on which one you ask. Here is diamond against the other six, both ways.
| Stone | Venus rates it | It rates Venus | Together? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ruby | enemy | enemy | No — mutual enmity |
| Pearl | enemy | neutral | No — one-way enmity |
| Red Coral | neutral | neutral | Permitted |
| Emerald | friend | friend | Permitted |
| Yellow Sapphire | neutral | enemy | No — one-way enmity |
| Blue Sapphire | friend | friend | Permitted |
Ruby is hostile in both directions, which is the unambiguous case. Pearl and Yellow Sapphire are one-way enmities — the kind a flat list flattens away. Tradition does not average the two directions: one-way enmity is enough to rule the pairing out. A diamond may be worn alongside red coral, emerald and blue sapphire without conflict.
Care: Lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical but tradition holds that only natural stones transmit the graha, so they are not used.
Judging Quality Before You Buy
For a diamond, insist on a GIA or IGI certificate — for astrological use clarity matters more than carat, and a black inclusion visible to the eye is traditionally rejected outright. White sapphire is the honest choice at a fraction of the cost and carries the same graha.
- Colour to look for
- Colourless to faint tint; white sapphire is the near-colourless corundum substitute
- Origin
- Diamonds from anywhere with certification; white sapphire from Sri Lanka
- Indicative price
- Diamond ₹25,000+ per carat · White sapphire ₹1,500 – ₹8,000 per ratti
- Upratna (substitute)
- Opal — the same graha at a far milder strength, and the usual choice where diamond is contraindicated or out of budget.
Prices move with origin, clarity, treatment and the market — treat the band as a sanity check on a quote, not a valuation. Ask for a lab report that names the species and discloses any treatment: what counts as acceptable treatment differs by stone, so a certificate that simply says “natural” is not the one to accept.
How to Wear It
- Fix the weight first — roughly one ratti per ten kilograms of body weight, three to five ratti as a practical minimum. Confirm whether your jeweller means the 0.9-carat ratti or the traditional 0.12-gram one.
- Set it in platinum or white gold with the back left open so the stone rests on the skin. A closed bezel is held to block the graha.
- Wash the ring in raw milk, honey, ghee, curd and clean water, then place it before Lakshmi.
- Chant ॐ द्रां द्रीं द्रौं सः शुक्राय नमः — Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah — 16,000 times, or have the japa performed for you.
- Wear it on the middle finger of the right hand, putting it on for the first time on Friday morning.
- Fast on Friday and watch what the stone does over the first thirty days.
Finger, metal and day follow Venus and not your ascendant, so they are the same whichever sign you are reading this from.
Venus, and What the Stone Is Actually For
A gemstone does one thing: it strengthens its graha. So diamond is only worth wearing if a stronger Venus is what your chart wants — and that means knowing what Venus is responsible for in the first place.
- Classical nature
- Benefic — the graha of pleasure, and the most easily corrupted of the nine
- Owns
- Taurus and Libra
- Exalted
- Pisces, deepest at 27°
- Debilitated
- Virgo
- Moolatrikona
- Libra 0°–15°
- Mahadasha
- 20 years
- Karaka of
- Marriage, the wife in a man's chart, vehicles, art, music, luxury, hotels, cosmetics
- In the body
- Kidneys, the reproductive system, the throat, skin lustre and the eyes
- Its nakshatras
- Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha
- Combustion
- Within 10° of the Sun when direct, 8° when retrograde
The three nakshatras Venus rules — Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha — matter because selecting a stone by janma nakshatra is the more precise of the two routes: a nakshatra spans 13°20′ against a sign's 30°, so it pins the birth Moon to a segment rather than to a whole sign. How much of any one sign that segment covers varies — padas of 3°20′, one to four of the nine a sign is built from — so the per-ascendant pages state it exactly. A birth under any of the three is a case for diamond that the sign table alone would not produce.
Why Taurus and Libra Both Get Diamond — but Not Identical Advice
Venus rules both Taurus and Libra, so both inherit diamond as their primary stone and both are marked as its own sign in the table above. The recommendation is not equally strong for the two, and what splits them is the moolatrikona — the arc where a graha is strongest short of exaltation. For Venus that is Libra 0°–15°. From Libra the graha sits in its own moolatrikona; from Taurus it is in plain ownership. So diamond stands on marginally firmer ground for Libra than for Taurus — and that is the only difference between the two. Everything else on this page applies to both equally.
General Rules
- Pause for thirteen days after a death in the family and set the stone aside for that period.
- Do not wear a stone that has been worn by someone else, and do not pass yours on.
- Clean it monthly and re-energise it in moonlight or clean water.
- Replace it once it cracks, clouds or loses colour — tradition treats that as the stone having finished its work.
- If anything worsens sharply in the first thirty days, remove it and have the chart re-read.

Find Out If It Is Your Stone
The table above is the rule by ascendant. Whether diamond is right for you also depends on where Venus actually sits, whether it is combust or retrograde, and which dasha you are running — which is a chart reading, not a table lookup.
