Where the 3rd and 10th Lordship Comes From

Venus owns Taurus and Libra. Counting from Leo as the first house, Taurus is the 10th and Libra is the 3rd — which is the whole of it. Two signs, two houses — the 3rd and the 10th from Leo — and the verdict on diamond turns on which of the two carries more weight.

Neither of these is a trikona or a dusthana, so the rule that decides most cases does not apply. Diamond is not contraindicated for Leo and it is not indicated either — it becomes relevant only if Venus is specifically afflicted in the chart, or if a dasha of Venus is running.

The Leo gemstone page states this as a single line — “Diamond — Venus rules the 3rd and the 10th” — and lists it among the stones to avoid for this ascendant.

That is a stricter line than this page takes, and the difference is worth naming. The trikona and dusthana test this page runs finds no verdict in the 3rd and the 10th, so the Leo page is weighing something the house lordship alone does not carry. On this combination there is a further reason to take the stricter reading seriously: it cannot share a hand with ruby, the Leo primary stone, in either direction. Neither page overrules the other: the lordship does not forbid diamond, and nothing on this page is a case for wearing it without a reading.

Wearing It Alongside Ruby

Ruby is the Leo primary stone, because the Sun rules Leo (Simha) and owns the 1st from it. So the pairing a Leo native is most likely to consider is diamond with ruby, and whether that is allowed depends on how Venus and the Sun rate each other.

They are enemies in both directions. This is one of only two mutually hostile pairs among the twenty-one, and it is an unambiguous no: wear diamond or ruby, never the two together.

On diamond generally: Lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical but tradition holds that only natural stones transmit the graha, so they are not used.

Venus in Leo Itself

House lordship is one axis and sign dignity is another, and for a Leo ascendant they do not always agree. Venus is exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo, and Leo is neither. So there is no dignity bonus and no dignity penalty for a Leo ascendant, and the verdict on diamond rests entirely on the 3rd and the 10th.

The Four Padas of Leo Where the Two Routes Disagree

Selecting a stone by janma nakshatra is the more precise route, because it pins the birth Moon to one nakshatra instead of a whole sign. Three nakshatras touch Leo — but a sign is nine padas of 3°20′ and the three divide them unevenly, not into thirds. Purva Phalguni (Leo 13°20′ – 26°40′) is ruled by Venus, and covers four of the nine.

So there is a real disagreement for those births: the nakshatra lord is Venus, which argues for diamond, while the 3rd and the 10th from the ascendant argue against it. Neither route overrules the other on paper. In practice the ascendant's lordship is what a reading weighs first, and a birth under Purva Phalguni is the one circumstance in which a Leo native might be pointed at diamond anyway.

What a Leo Ascendant Should Wear Instead

A graha owning neither a trikona nor a dusthana from Leo has no particular work to do for that ascendant, and Venus is in exactly that position here. These stones do have work to do.

If the appeal is diamond itself rather than Venus, its upratna is opal — a substitute of the same graha with a far milder effect, which is the usual compromise where the primary stone is contraindicated.

The Ascendants Diamond Reads Differently For

The same stone is not the same advice from every ascendant, and diamond is a clear example. From Leo it is neither indicated nor forbidden. The two ascendants below read differently, and nothing about Venus or about diamond has changed: Taurus and Libra land on different houses when the counting starts from a different lagna.
