When Rahu Is Strong

Rahu is the north lunar node — the point where the Moon crosses the ecliptic going north — and it is pure amplified appetite. Well-placed it is the most powerful engine in a chart for worldly success: it gives obsessive focus on one thing, indifference to convention, and an appetite for scale that Jupiter's respectability would never permit. It dominates the charts of politicians, founders, aviators, technologists, speculators and anyone who left the country and did well. In the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses Rahu is genuinely constructive, and the 11th is its best placement in the whole chart.

When Rahu Is Weak or Afflicted

Badly placed, Rahu gives the appetite without the object. The native chases something that keeps redefining itself, mistakes intensity for direction, and is prone to addiction, speculation and being deceived by people who flatter the same appetite. It manufactures illusion, so the specific danger is confident wrongness. With the Moon it forms Grahan dosha and destabilises the mind; with the Sun it eclipses authority and the father. Its health effects are the ones no one can diagnose — allergies, phobias, breathing complaints and skin conditions with no clear cause.

• Recite the Durga Saptashati or the Rahu Kavach, and Om Raam Rahave Namah; the classical japa count for Rahu is 18,000.
• Donate mustard oil, black or blue-black cloth, coconut, sesame or a blanket, and offer mustard oil at a Bhairava or Shani temple on a Saturday.
• Keep a coconut in the house and feed dogs and crows — the standard household Rahu practices.
• Name the thing you actually want, in writing, and check it every year. Rahu's harm is not obstruction but drift, and the most effective remedy for it is a fixed object it cannot keep redefining.
