Rahu in the 3rd House
सहज भाव · Rahu · Gemini under Kaal Purush · in a friend's sign
Rahu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying foreign lands and foreigners, technology, aviation, speculation, politics, sudden and unearned gain, placed in the bhava of courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — that pairing is the whole of what Rahu in the 3rd house means before a chart is opened. The 3rd house does not look to Rahu for its significations though — it looks to Mars for courage, Mercury for communication — so Rahu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.
Under Kaal Purush the 3rd Is Gemini
In the natural chart the 3rd house is Gemini, so Rahu here is in a friend's sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two do not read each other the same way: Rahu counts Mercury a friend, while Mercury counts Rahu neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 3rd delivers on younger siblings, not merely how much of it arrives. Gemini is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Mrigashira, Ardra and the first, second and third padas of Punarvasu, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. Rahu lords Ardra among the three, so Rahu in the 3rd is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls anywhere in that nakshatra — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between Rahu and this bhava’s younger siblings.
Rahu sits outside the reckoning that verdict comes from. No standard table exalts Rahu anywhere, and the schools that do place Rahu somewhere disagree over where: the exaltation entry reads “Taurus by the most common reckoning; Gemini in others” and the debilitation entry “Scorpio by the same reckoning; Sagittarius in others”. Calling Rahu in a friend's sign in Gemini therefore says how Rahu stands to Mercury, lord of the 3rd, and nothing about a dignity Rahu holds in its own right. Read Rahu here from what the 3rd governs, younger siblings, from where Mercury sits, and from the 18 years Rahu runs its mahadasha — which is what the rest of this page does.
What the 3rd House’s Classification Does to Rahu
The 3rd is classified upachaya (malefics gain here); apoklima (cadent); dusthana in some traditions. Set against Rahu, a shadowy malefic graha, that classification produces:
- Dusthana. The 3rd is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains — while what gets used is Rahu’s capacity to endure younger siblings rather than to enjoy it.
- Upachaya. The 3rd is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Rahu is reckoned shadowy malefic, so the rule applies directly: on younger siblings a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.
- And a disagreement. Some traditions count the 3rd a dusthana and others do not. It changes the reading of Rahu here materially, so it is left standing as a disagreement rather than resolved in one direction.
Rahu’s own preferred bhavas are the 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th, and the 3rd is among them — the Upachaya houses, where Rahu's appetite becomes ambition instead of obsession. So the classification of the 3rd and the disposition of Rahu point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.
Directional strength. Digbala is not defined for Rahu. The four grantor bhavas name the seven classical grahas and no node, and Rahu, having no disc, has no direction in which to be bright. On the 3rd that is a measurement which does not reach Rahu rather than one Rahu fails — what decides Rahu in the 3rd is that bhava’s own subject, younger siblings, the condition of Mercury, and the 18-year Rahu mahadasha.
Which Bhavas Rahu Reaches From the 3rd
No classical text gives Rahu a drishti of its own, and the traditions that supply Rahu one disagree: some lend Rahu the aspects of Mercury, this bhava’s lord, and some give Rahu none at all. So this page prints no aspect list for Rahu in the 3rd, the bhava of courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — a list would state one school’s convention as settled. What Rahu does from the 3rd instead is take the colour of Mercury and work through wherever Mercury sits, which makes the reach of Rahu here exactly as wide as Mercury’s own placement and no wider.
And it is never one placement. Rahu and Ketu are the two ends of one line, six bhavas apart always, so Rahu in the 3rd fixes Ketu in the 9th, the bhava of fortune, dharma, higher education, father, long-distance travel, gurus, philosophy. The axis is read as Rahu inflating the 3rd while Ketu empties the 9th — desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains pressed onto younger siblings, and detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition thinning out of luck and fortune, at once. The other end is at Ketu in the 9th house.
Where the 3rd Sits Relative to Rahu’s Own Bhavas
- Aquarius, which Rahu owns, is the 11th — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 3rd.
- Rahu exalts in Taurus, the 2nd on the commoner reckoning — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 3rd.
- Rahu falls in Scorpio, the 8th on the commoner reckoning — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 3rd.
- Bhavat bhavam from the 3rd gives the 5th, intelligence, children, creativity, romance, speculation, past-life merit (Poorva Punya) — a Parashari extension, read as Rahu’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
- Mercury, dispositor of the 3rd, also owns the 6th — so whatever Rahu does in the 3rd is routed through a lord whose other business is health and diseases.
The body reading. The 3rd bhava is arms, shoulders, hands, collarbone, right ear and the upper respiratory tract, and Rahu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Rahu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Rahu is poisoning, phobia, skin disorder and undiagnosable breathing complaints. So Rahu in the 3rd is read as those presenting at arms rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
When Rahu Is Actually in Your 3rd House
Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 3rd house, and here the ephemeris returns a sharper answer than any essay. Rahu occupies only 2 rashis across 2026–2027, so Rahu transits the 3rd house for only 2 of the twelve ascendants in that whole period — Scorpio, Sagittarius lagnas. For the other 10, general advice about Rahu in the 3rd house describes nothing that is happening. The longest unbroken stretch is 338 days, for a Sagittarius ascendant, whose 3rd house is Aquarius.
| Ascendant | Your 3rd house is | Rahu there in 2026–2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Gemini | not in these two years |
| Taurus | Cancer | not in these two years |
| Gemini | Leo | not in these two years |
| Cancer | Virgo | not in these two years |
| Leo | Libra | not in these two years |
| Virgo | Scorpio | not in these two years |
| Libra | Sagittarius | not in these two years |
| Scorpio | Capricorn | from 5 December 2026 |
| Sagittarius | Aquarius | to 5 December 2026 |
| Capricorn | Pisces | not in these two years |
| Aquarius | Aries | not in these two years |
| Pisces | Taurus | not in these two years |
Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.
The Classical Reading of Rahu in the 3rd
Strong placement. Bold, unconventional ventures and media or communication work; can bring conflict with siblings.
Reading the 3rd in an Actual Chart
Everything above is structural — true of Rahu in the 3rd in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Rahu actually occupies: the 3rd house is Gemini for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 3rd house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Rahu there. And the dasha — Rahu’s mahadasha runs 18 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

Is Rahu in Your 3rd House?
The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi Rahu occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
