Ketu in the 9th House

Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying moksha, past-life skill, renunciation, occult knowledge, medicine, flags and banners, placed in the bhava of fortune, dharma, higher education, father, long-distance travel, gurus, philosophy — that pairing is the whole of what Ketu in the 9th house means before a chart is opened. The 9th house does not look to Ketu for its significations though — it looks to Jupiter for dharma and the guru, Sun for the father — so Ketu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 9th Is Sagittarius

In the natural chart the 9th house is Sagittarius, so Ketu here is in a neutral sign. The bhava answers to Jupiter, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other neutral, so nothing in Ketu’s dealings with the lord of the 9th pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers luck and fortune are set by Jupiter’s own placement alone. Sagittarius is spanned by Mula, Purva Ashadha and the first pada of Uttara Ashadha, lorded in that order by Ketu, Venus and the Sun. Ketu lords Mula among the three, so Ketu in the 9th is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls anywhere in that nakshatra — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between Ketu and this bhava’s luck and fortune.

What the 9th House’s Classification Does to Ketu

The 9th is classified trikona (trine); strongest of the auspicious houses. Set against Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha, that classification produces:

• Trikona. The 9th is a trine, the most auspicious of the groups, so Ketu is likelier to give its better significations here than its worse ones.

Ketu is documented as doing well in the 3rd, 6th, 11th, 12th and badly in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and the 9th is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about Ketu here, the reading of the 9th falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.

Directional strength. Digbala is not defined for Ketu. The four grantor bhavas name the seven classical grahas and no node, and Ketu, having no disc, has no direction in which to be bright. No classical text gives Ketu a drishti of its own, and the traditions that supply Ketu one disagree: some lend Ketu the aspects of Jupiter, this bhava’s lord, and some give Ketu none at all. So this page prints no aspect list for Ketu in the 9th, the bhava of fortune, dharma, higher education, father, long-distance travel, gurus, philosophy — a list would state one school’s convention as settled. • Scorpio, which Ketu owns, is the 8th — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 9th.
• Ketu exalts in Scorpio, the 8th on the commoner reckoning — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 9th. And Ketu owns Scorpio as well as exalting in it, so the 8th is the one bhava carrying both of Ketu’s claims at once.
• Ketu falls in Taurus, the 2nd on the commoner reckoning — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 9th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 9th gives the 5th, intelligence, children, creativity, romance, speculation, past-life merit (Poorva Punya) — a Parashari extension, read as Ketu’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Jupiter, dispositor of the 9th, also owns the 12th — so whatever Ketu does in the 9th is routed through a lord whose other business is expenses and losses.

The body reading. The 9th bhava is hips, thighs and the femur, and Ketu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Ketu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Ketu is undiagnosable illness, skin disease and immune disorder. So Ketu in the 9th is read as those presenting at hips rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
