Ketu in the 8th House
आयु भाव · Ketu · Scorpio under Kaal Purush · exalted on the commoner reckoning
Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying moksha, past-life skill, renunciation, occult knowledge, medicine, flags and banners, placed in the bhava of longevity, sudden events, inheritance, occult, transformation, in-laws, joint finances — that pairing is the whole of what Ketu in the 8th house means before a chart is opened. The 8th house does not look to Ketu for its significations though — it looks to Saturn for longevity — so Ketu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.
Under Kaal Purush the 8th Is Scorpio
In the natural chart the 8th house is Scorpio, so Ketu here is exalted on the commoner reckoning. The bhava answers to Mars, with Ketu as co-lord, and the two do not read each other the same way: Ketu counts Mars, with Ketu as co-lord a friend, while Mars, with Ketu as co-lord counts Ketu neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 8th delivers on longevity, not merely how much of it arrives. Scorpio is spanned by the fourth pada of Vishakha, Anuradha and Jyeshtha, lorded in that order by Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. None of the three is Ketu, so Ketu in the 8th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on longevity than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Ketu in the same 8th house read differently.
Ketu sits outside the reckoning that verdict comes from. No standard table exalts Ketu anywhere, and the schools that do place Ketu somewhere disagree over where: the exaltation entry reads “Scorpio by the most common reckoning; Sagittarius in others” and the debilitation entry “Taurus by the same reckoning; Gemini in others”. Calling Ketu exalted on the commoner reckoning in Scorpio therefore says how Ketu stands to Mars, with Ketu as co-lord, lord of the 8th, and nothing about a dignity Ketu holds in its own right. Read Ketu here from what the 8th governs, longevity, from where Mars, with Ketu as co-lord sits, and from the 7 years Ketu runs its mahadasha — which is what the rest of this page does.
What the 8th House’s Classification Does to Ketu
The 8th is classified dusthana (malefic house). Set against Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha, that classification produces:
- Dusthana. The 8th is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition — while what gets used is Ketu’s capacity to endure longevity rather than to enjoy it.
Ketu is documented as doing well in the 3rd, 6th, 11th, 12th and badly in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and the 8th is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about Ketu here, the reading of the 8th falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.
Directional strength. Digbala is not defined for Ketu. The four grantor bhavas name the seven classical grahas and no node, and Ketu, having no disc, has no direction in which to be bright. On the 8th that is a measurement which does not reach Ketu rather than one Ketu fails — what decides Ketu in the 8th is that bhava’s own subject, longevity, the condition of Mars, with Ketu as co-lord, and the 7-year Ketu mahadasha.
Which Bhavas Ketu Reaches From the 8th
No classical text gives Ketu a drishti of its own, and the traditions that supply Ketu one disagree: some lend Ketu the aspects of Mars, with Ketu as co-lord, this bhava’s lord, and some give Ketu none at all. So this page prints no aspect list for Ketu in the 8th, the bhava of longevity, sudden events, inheritance, occult, transformation, in-laws, joint finances — a list would state one school’s convention as settled. What Ketu does from the 8th instead is take the colour of Mars, with Ketu as co-lord and work through wherever Mars, with Ketu as co-lord sits, which makes the reach of Ketu here exactly as wide as Mars, with Ketu as co-lord’s own placement and no wider.
And it is never one placement. Ketu and Rahu are the two ends of one line, six bhavas apart always, so Ketu in the 8th fixes Rahu in the 2nd, the bhava of wealth, family, speech, food, accumulated assets, early childhood, immediate family. The axis is read as Ketu inflating the 8th while Rahu empties the 2nd — detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition pressed onto longevity, and desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains thinning out of savings and wealth, at once. The other end is at Rahu in the 2nd house.
Where the 8th Sits Relative to Ketu’s Own Bhavas
- The 8th is Ketu’s own bhava. Scorpio falls here in the natural chart, which is the strongest structural claim a graha can have on a house.
- The 8th is also Ketu’s exaltation bhava on the commoner reckoning — Scorpio falls here, so two of the strongest claims coincide on the 8th.
- Ketu falls in Taurus, the 2nd on the commoner reckoning — a direct opposition from the 8th.
- Bhavat bhavam from the 8th gives the 3rd, courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — a Parashari extension, read as Ketu’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
- Mars, dispositor of the 8th, also owns the 1st — so whatever Ketu does in the 8th is routed through a lord whose other business is personal identity.
The body reading. The 8th bhava is external genitalia, excretory organs, colon and the chronic-disease constitution, and Ketu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Ketu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Ketu is undiagnosable illness, skin disease and immune disorder. So Ketu in the 8th is read as those presenting at external genitalia rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
When Ketu Is Actually in Your 8th House
Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 8th house, and here the ephemeris returns a sharper answer than any essay. Ketu occupies only 2 rashis across 2026–2027, so Ketu transits the 8th house for only 2 of the twelve ascendants in that whole period — Sagittarius, Capricorn lagnas. For the other 10, general advice about Ketu in the 8th house describes nothing that is happening. The longest unbroken stretch is 338 days, for a Capricorn ascendant, whose 8th house is Leo.
| Ascendant | Your 8th house is | Ketu there in 2026–2027 |

| Aries | Scorpio | not in these two years |
| Taurus | Sagittarius | not in these two years |

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.
The Classical Reading of Ketu in the 8th
Co-lord of the natural sign. The strongest indication in the chart for occult ability, moksha-orientation and detachment from the body.
Reading the 8th in an Actual Chart
Everything above is structural — true of Ketu in the 8th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Ketu actually occupies: the 8th house is Scorpio for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 8th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Ketu there. And the dasha — Ketu’s mahadasha runs 7 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

Is Ketu in Your 8th House?
The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi Ketu occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
