Ketu in the 8th House

Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying moksha, past-life skill, renunciation, occult knowledge, medicine, flags and banners, placed in the bhava of longevity, sudden events, inheritance, occult, transformation, in-laws, joint finances — that pairing is the whole of what Ketu in the 8th house means before a chart is opened. The 8th house does not look to Ketu for its significations though — it looks to Saturn for longevity — so Ketu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 8th Is Scorpio

In the natural chart the 8th house is Scorpio, so Ketu here is exalted on the commoner reckoning. The bhava answers to Mars, with Ketu as co-lord, and the two do not read each other the same way: Ketu counts Mars, with Ketu as co-lord a friend, while Mars, with Ketu as co-lord counts Ketu neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 8th delivers on longevity, not merely how much of it arrives. Scorpio is spanned by the fourth pada of Vishakha, Anuradha and Jyeshtha, lorded in that order by Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. • Dusthana. The 8th is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition — while what gets used is Ketu’s capacity to endure longevity rather than to enjoy it.

Ketu is documented as doing well in the 3rd, 6th, 11th, 12th and badly in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and the 8th is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about Ketu here, the reading of the 8th falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.

Directional strength. Digbala is not defined for Ketu. The four grantor bhavas name the seven classical grahas and no node, and Ketu, having no disc, has no direction in which to be bright. • The 8th is Ketu’s own bhava. Scorpio falls here in the natural chart, which is the strongest structural claim a graha can have on a house.
• The 8th is also Ketu’s exaltation bhava on the commoner reckoning — Scorpio falls here, so two of the strongest claims coincide on the 8th.
• Ketu falls in Taurus, the 2nd on the commoner reckoning — a direct opposition from the 8th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 8th gives the 3rd, courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — a Parashari extension, read as Ketu’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Mars, dispositor of the 8th, also owns the 1st — so whatever Ketu does in the 8th is routed through a lord whose other business is personal identity.

The body reading. The 8th bhava is external genitalia, excretory organs, colon and the chronic-disease constitution, and Ketu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Ketu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Ketu is undiagnosable illness, skin disease and immune disorder. So Ketu in the 8th is read as those presenting at external genitalia rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
