Ketu in the 2nd House

Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying moksha, past-life skill, renunciation, occult knowledge, medicine, flags and banners, placed in the bhava of wealth, family, speech, food, accumulated assets, early childhood, immediate family — that pairing is the whole of what Ketu in the 2nd house means before a chart is opened. The 2nd house does not look to Ketu for its significations though — it looks to Jupiter for wealth, Mercury for speech — so Ketu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 2nd Is Taurus

In the natural chart the 2nd house is Taurus, so Ketu here is debilitated on the commoner reckoning. The bhava answers to Venus, and the two do not read each other the same way: Ketu counts Venus a friend, while Venus counts Ketu neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 2nd delivers on savings and wealth, not merely how much of it arrives. Taurus is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Krittika, Rohini and the first and second padas of Mrigashira, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. None of the three is Ketu, so Ketu in the 2nd always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on savings and wealth than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Ketu in the same 2nd house read differently.

Ketu sits outside the reckoning that verdict comes from. No standard table exalts Ketu anywhere, and the schools that do place Ketu somewhere disagree over where: the exaltation entry reads “Scorpio by the most common reckoning; Sagittarius in others” and the debilitation entry “Taurus by the same reckoning; Gemini in others”. Calling Ketu debilitated on the commoner reckoning in Taurus therefore says how Ketu stands to Venus, lord of the 2nd, and nothing about a dignity Ketu holds in its own right. What the 2nd House’s Classification Does to Ketu

The 2nd is classified maraka (with the 7th); panapara (succedent). Set against Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha, that classification produces:

• Maraka. The 2nd is one of the two maraka houses, a classification used only in longevity calculation. It says nothing about Ketu on its own and nothing at all about an individual chart.

Ketu is documented as struggling in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, the 2nd included — Ketu on the ascendant weakens self-definition and in the 7th it hollows out partnership. Read that as where the effort goes in the 2nd, not as a verdict: Ketu’s dispositor and the dasha decide the outcome.

Directional strength. Digbala is not defined for Ketu. The four grantor bhavas name the seven classical grahas and no node, and Ketu, having no disc, has no direction in which to be bright. On the 2nd that is a measurement which does not reach Ketu rather than one Ketu fails — what decides Ketu in the 2nd is that bhava’s own subject, savings and wealth, the condition of Venus, and the 7-year Ketu mahadasha.

Which Bhavas Ketu Reaches From the 2nd

No classical text gives Ketu a drishti of its own, and the traditions that supply Ketu one disagree: some lend Ketu the aspects of Venus, this bhava’s lord, and some give Ketu none at all. So this page prints no aspect list for Ketu in the 2nd, the bhava of wealth, family, speech, food, accumulated assets, early childhood, immediate family — a list would state one school’s convention as settled. What Ketu does from the 2nd instead is take the colour of Venus and work through wherever Venus sits, which makes the reach of Ketu here exactly as wide as Venus’s own placement and no wider.

And it is never one placement. Ketu and Rahu are the two ends of one line, six bhavas apart always, so Ketu in the 2nd fixes Rahu in the 8th, the bhava of longevity, sudden events, inheritance, occult, transformation, in-laws, joint finances. The axis is read as Ketu inflating the 2nd while Rahu empties the 8th — detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition pressed onto savings and wealth, and desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains thinning out of longevity, at once. The other end is at Rahu in the 8th house.

Where the 2nd Sits Relative to Ketu’s Own Bhavas

• Scorpio, which Ketu owns, is the 8th — a direct opposition from the 2nd.
• Ketu exalts in Scorpio, the 8th on the commoner reckoning — a direct opposition from the 2nd. And Ketu owns Scorpio as well as exalting in it, so the 8th is the one bhava carrying both of Ketu’s claims at once.
• The 2nd is Ketu’s debilitation bhava on the commoner reckoning — Taurus falls here.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 2nd gives the 3rd, courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — a Parashari extension, read as Ketu’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Venus, dispositor of the 2nd, also owns the 7th — so whatever Ketu does in the 2nd is routed through a lord whose other business is spouse / partner.

The body reading. The 2nd bhava is face, mouth, teeth, tongue, throat and the right eye, and Ketu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Ketu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Ketu is undiagnosable illness, skin disease and immune disorder. So Ketu in the 2nd is read as those presenting at face rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When Ketu Is Actually in Your 2nd House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 2nd house, and here the ephemeris returns a sharper answer than any essay. Ketu occupies only 2 rashis across 2026–2027, so Ketu transits the 2nd house for only 2 of the twelve ascendants in that whole period — Gemini, Cancer lagnas. For the other 10, general advice about Ketu in the 2nd house describes nothing that is happening. The longest unbroken stretch is 338 days, for a Cancer ascendant, whose 2nd house is Leo.
