Ketu in the 10th House

Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying moksha, past-life skill, renunciation, occult knowledge, medicine, flags and banners, placed in the bhava of career, reputation, authority, public status, profession, achievements, government — that pairing is the whole of what Ketu in the 10th house means before a chart is opened. The 10th house does not look to Ketu for its significations though — it looks to Saturn for profession, Sun and Mercury for status — so Ketu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 10th Is Capricorn

In the natural chart the 10th house is Capricorn, so Ketu here is in a friend's sign. The bhava answers to Saturn, and the two do not read each other the same way: Ketu counts Saturn a friend, while Saturn counts Ketu neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 10th delivers on career and profession, not merely how much of it arrives. Capricorn is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and the first and second padas of Dhanishta, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. What the 10th House’s Classification Does to Ketu

The 10th is classified kendra (angular); upachaya (malefics gain here). Set against Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha, that classification produces:

• Kendra. The 10th is angular, so Ketu here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.
• Upachaya. The 10th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Ketu is reckoned shadowy malefic, so the rule applies directly: on career and profession a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.

Ketu is documented as doing well in the 3rd, 6th, 11th, 12th and badly in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and the 10th is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about Ketu here, the reading of the 10th falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.

What Ketu does from the 10th instead is take the colour of Saturn and work through wherever Saturn sits, which makes the reach of Ketu here exactly as wide as Saturn’s own placement and no wider.

• Ketu exalts in Scorpio, the 8th on the commoner reckoning — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 10th. And Ketu owns Scorpio as well as exalting in it, so the 8th is the one bhava carrying both of Ketu’s claims at once.
• Ketu falls in Taurus, the 2nd on the commoner reckoning — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 10th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 10th gives the 7th, marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — a Parashari extension, read as Ketu’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Saturn, dispositor of the 10th, also owns the 11th — so whatever Ketu does in the 10th is routed through a lord whose other business is income and gains.

The body reading. The 10th bhava is knees, kneecaps, joints and the spine, and Ketu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Ketu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Ketu is undiagnosable illness, skin disease and immune disorder. So Ketu in the 10th is read as those presenting at knees rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
