graha in bhava

Sun in the 10th House

कर्म भाव · Surya · Capricorn under Kaal Purush · in an enemy's sign

The Sun, a mild malefic graha signifying father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration, placed in the bhava of career, reputation, authority, public status, profession, achievements, government — that pairing is the whole of what the Sun in the 10th house means before a chart is opened. It is a closer fit than most: the 10th house counts the Sun among its own natural significators, the karaka it is read through for status. A significator sitting in the bhava it signifies is read more literally than any other placement, because the graha and the house are asking the same question.

Under Kaal Purush the 10th Is Capricorn

In the natural chart the 10th house is Capricorn, so the Sun here is in an enemy's sign. The bhava answers to Saturn, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other an enemy, so nothing in the Sun’s dealings with the lord of the 10th pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers career and profession are set by Saturn’s own placement alone. Capricorn is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and the first and second padas of Dhanishta, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. The Sun lords Uttara Ashadha among the three, so the Sun in the 10th is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls in that nakshatra’s second, third and fourth padas — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between the Sun and this bhava’s career and profession.

What the 10th House’s Classification Does to the Sun

The 10th is classified kendra (angular); upachaya (malefics gain here). Set against the Sun, a mild malefic graha, that classification produces:

  • Kendra. The 10th is angular, so the Sun here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.
  • Upachaya. The 10th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. The Sun is reckoned mild malefic, so the rule applies directly: on career and profession a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.

The Sun’s own preferred bhavas are the 1st, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and the 10th is among them — the Sun does well in the Kendra and Trikona, and gains in the Upachaya. So the classification of the 10th and the disposition of the Sun point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.

Directional strength. The 10th is one of the four bhavas that confer digbala and the Sun is one of its beneficiaries, so the Sun here holds full directional strength — one of only seven of the 108 combinations that do.

Which Bhavas the Sun Reaches From the 10th

The Sun casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 10th means it reaches one bhava:

  • The 4th, mother, home, property, vehicles, inner peace, education base, emotional foundation — the 7th from the 10th. The Sun is documented as struggling in the 4th, so this aspect lands as pressure on a bhava it is uneasy in.

Where the 10th Sits Relative to the Sun’s Own Bhavas

  • Leo, which the Sun owns, is the 5tha 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 10th.
  • the Sun exalts in Aries, the 1sta square, both of them kendra positions from the 10th.
  • the Sun falls in Libra, the 7tha square, both of them kendra positions from the 10th.
  • Bhavat bhavam from the 10th gives the 7th, marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — a Parashari extension, read as the Sun’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
  • Saturn, dispositor of the 10th, also owns the 11th — so whatever the Sun does in the 10th is routed through a lord whose other business is income and gains.

The body reading. The 10th bhava is knees, kneecaps, joints and the spine, while the Sun governs heart, eyes, bones, head, and general vitality (ojas); medical astrology reads the 10th for the Sun where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Sun Is Actually in Your 10th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 10th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when the Sun is in it. The Sun covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 10th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 32 days, and 2 ascendants are level on it: Virgo, for whom the 10th house is Gemini; and Libra, for whom the 10th house is Cancer.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.

The Classical Reading of the Sun in the 10th

Gains digbala. Government, administration and positions of visible authority; reputation for integrity.

Reading the 10th in an Actual Chart

Everything above is structural — true of the Sun in the 10th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi the Sun actually occupies: the 10th house is Capricorn for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 10th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto the Sun there. And the dashathe Sun’s mahadasha runs 6 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

The Other Grahas in the 10th House

The Sun in the Other Bhavas

For the doctrine behind the terms above — what a kendra is, how digbala is reckoned, the bhava’s own strong and afflicted readings and its remedies — see the 10th house in full. For the Sun itself, its dignities, dasha and remedies, see the Sun, and for the Kaal Purush placement in detail, the Sun in Capricorn.

Is the Sun in Your 10th House?

The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi the Sun occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
