Sun in the 7th House

The Sun, a mild malefic graha signifying father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration, placed in the bhava of marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — that pairing is the whole of what the Sun in the 7th house means before a chart is opened. The 7th house does not look to the Sun for its significations though — it looks to Venus for the spouse, Jupiter for the husband in a woman's chart — so the Sun here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 7th Is Libra

In the natural chart the 7th house is Libra, so the Sun here is debilitated. The bhava answers to Venus, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other an enemy, so nothing in the Sun’s dealings with the lord of the 7th pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers spouse / partner are set by Venus’s own placement alone. Libra is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Chitra, Swati and the first, second and third padas of Vishakha, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. None of the three is the Sun, so the Sun in the 7th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on spouse / partner than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with the Sun in the same 7th house read differently.

What the 7th House’s Classification Does to the Sun

The 7th is classified kendra (angular); maraka (with the 2nd). Set against the Sun, a mild malefic graha, that classification produces:

• Kendra. The 7th is angular, so the Sun here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.
• Maraka. The 7th is one of the two maraka houses, a classification used only in longevity calculation. It says nothing about the Sun on its own and nothing at all about an individual chart.

The Sun is documented as struggling in the 4th, 7th, 12th, the 7th included — the 7th gives friction in partnership and the 4th unsettles domestic peace. Read that as where the effort goes in the 7th, not as a verdict: the Sun’s dispositor and the dasha decide the outcome.

Directional strength. The Sun gains digbala in the 10th, which is a square, both of them kendra positions from the 7th — so in the 7th the directional component of the Sun’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

• The 1st, self, body, personality, life path, first impressions, head and physical appearance — the 7th from the 7th. The Sun is documented as doing well in the 1st, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

• Leo, which the Sun owns, is the 5th — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 7th.
• the Sun exalts in Aries, the 1st — a direct opposition from the 7th.
• The 7th is the Sun’s debilitation bhava — Libra falls here.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 7th gives the 1st, self, body, personality, life path, first impressions, head and physical appearance — a Parashari extension, read as the Sun’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Venus, dispositor of the 7th, also owns the 2nd — so whatever the Sun does in the 7th is routed through a lord whose other business is savings and wealth.

The body reading. The 7th bhava is pelvis, lower back, reproductive organs, bladder and the kidneys, while the Sun governs heart, eyes, bones, head, and general vitality (ojas); medical astrology reads the 7th for the Sun where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Sun Is Actually in Your 7th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 7th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when the Sun is in it. The Sun covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 7th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 32 days, and 2 ascendants are level on it: Sagittarius, for whom the 7th house is Gemini; and Capricorn, for whom the 7th house is Cancer.
