graha in bhava

Sun in the 1st House

तनु भाव · Surya · Aries under Kaal Purush · exalted

The Sun, a mild malefic graha signifying father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration, placed in the bhava of self, body, personality, life path, first impressions, head and physical appearance — that pairing is the whole of what the Sun in the 1st house means before a chart is opened. It is a closer fit than most: the 1st house counts the Sun among its own natural significators, the karaka the bhava is read through. A significator sitting in the bhava it signifies is read more literally than any other placement, because the graha and the house are asking the same question.

Under Kaal Purush the 1st Is Aries

In the natural chart the 1st house is Aries, so the Sun here is exalted — deepest at 10° of Aries. The bhava answers to Mars, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other a friend, so nothing in the Sun’s dealings with the lord of the 1st pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers personal identity are set by Mars’s own placement alone. Aries is spanned by Ashwini, Bharani and the first pada of Krittika, lorded in that order by Ketu, Venus and the Sun. The Sun lords Krittika among the three, so the Sun in the 1st is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls in that nakshatra’s first pada — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between the Sun and this bhava’s personal identity.

What the 1st House’s Classification Does to the Sun

The 1st is classified kendra (angular); trikona (trine). Set against the Sun, a mild malefic graha, that classification produces:

  • Kendra. The 1st is angular, so the Sun here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.
  • Trikona. The 1st is a trine, the most auspicious of the groups, so the Sun is likelier to give its better significations here than its worse ones.

The Sun’s own preferred bhavas are the 1st, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and the 1st is among them — the Sun does well in the Kendra and Trikona, and gains in the Upachaya. So the classification of the 1st and the disposition of the Sun point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.

Directional strength. The Sun gains digbala in the 10th, which is a square, both of them kendra positions from the 1st — so in the 1st the directional component of the Sun’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas the Sun Reaches From the 1st

The Sun casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 1st means it reaches one bhava:

  • The 7th, marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — the 7th from the 1st. The Sun is documented as struggling in the 7th, so this aspect lands as pressure on a bhava it is uneasy in.

Where the 1st Sits Relative to the Sun’s Own Bhavas

  • Leo, which the Sun owns, is the 5tha trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 1st.
  • The 1st is also the Sun’s exaltation bhavaAries falls here, so two of the strongest claims coincide on the 1st.
  • the Sun falls in Libra, the 7tha direct opposition from the 1st.
  • Bhavat bhavam from the 1st gives the 1st — itself. Counting the 1st again from the 1st returns to the 1st, which happens for the 1st and the 7th alone and is why those two are read as a closed pair; for the Sun it means the secondary indicator and the primary one are the same bhava.
  • Mars, dispositor of the 1st, also owns the 8th — so whatever the Sun does in the 1st is routed through a lord whose other business is longevity.

The body reading. The 1st bhava is head, brain, skull, complexion and overall constitution, while the Sun governs heart, eyes, bones, head, and general vitality (ojas); medical astrology reads the 1st for the Sun where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Sun Is Actually in Your 1st House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 1st house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when the Sun is in it. The Sun covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 1st-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 32 days, and 2 ascendants are level on it: Gemini, for whom the 1st house is Gemini; and Cancer, for whom the 1st house is Cancer.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.

The Classical Reading of the Sun in the 1st

Its own karaka position. Leadership, straight posture, an authoritative presence — with a tendency to ego and impatience with being contradicted.

Reading the 1st in an Actual Chart

Everything above is structural — true of the Sun in the 1st in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi the Sun actually occupies: the 1st house is Aries for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 1st house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto the Sun there. And the dashathe Sun’s mahadasha runs 6 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

The Other Grahas in the 1st House

The Sun in the Other Bhavas

For the doctrine behind the terms above — what a kendra is, how digbala is reckoned, the bhava’s own strong and afflicted readings and its remedies — see the 1st house in full. For the Sun itself, its dignities, dasha and remedies, see the Sun, and for the Kaal Purush placement in detail, the Sun in Aries.

Is the Sun in Your 1st House?

The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi the Sun occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
