graha in bhava

Venus in the 1st House

तनु भाव · Shukra · Aries under Kaal Purush · in a neutral sign

Venus, a benefic graha signifying marriage, the wife in a man's chart, vehicles, art, music, luxury, hotels, cosmetics, placed in the bhava of self, body, personality, life path, first impressions, head and physical appearance — that pairing is the whole of what Venus in the 1st house means before a chart is opened. The 1st house does not look to Venus for its significations though — it looks to Sun, and the Lagna lord itself — so Venus here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 1st Is Aries

In the natural chart the 1st house is Aries, so Venus here is in a neutral sign. The bhava answers to Mars, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other neutral, so nothing in Venus’s dealings with the lord of the 1st pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers personal identity are set by Mars’s own placement alone. Aries is spanned by Ashwini, Bharani and the first pada of Krittika, lorded in that order by Ketu, Venus and the Sun. Venus lords Bharani among the three, so Venus in the 1st is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls anywhere in that nakshatra — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between Venus and this bhava’s personal identity.

What the 1st House’s Classification Does to Venus

The 1st is classified kendra (angular); trikona (trine). Set against Venus, a benefic graha, that classification produces:

  • Kendra. The 1st is angular, so Venus here works on a platform — whatever it does shows outwardly in the life rather than staying internal.
  • Trikona. The 1st is a trine, the most auspicious of the groups, so Venus is likelier to give its better significations here than its worse ones.

Venus’s own preferred bhavas are the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 11th, 12th, and the 1st is among them — Venus is the one graha that genuinely enjoys the 12th, the house of bed and pleasure. So the classification of the 1st and the disposition of Venus point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.

Directional strength. Venus gains digbala in the 4th, which is a square, both of them kendra positions from the 1st — so in the 1st the directional component of Venus’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas Venus Reaches From the 1st

Venus casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 1st means it reaches one bhava:

  • The 7th, marriage, life partner, business partnerships, public dealings, contracts, open enemies — the 7th from the 1st. Venus is documented as struggling in the 7th, so this aspect lands as pressure on a bhava it is uneasy in.

Where the 1st Sits Relative to Venus’s Own Bhavas

  • Taurus, which Venus owns, is the 2nda 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 1st.
  • Libra, which Venus owns, is the 7tha direct opposition from the 1st.
  • Venus exalts in Pisces, the 12tha 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 1st.
  • Venus falls in Virgo, the 6tha 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 1st.
  • Bhavat bhavam from the 1st gives the 1st — itself. Counting the 1st again from the 1st returns to the 1st, which happens for the 1st and the 7th alone and is why those two are read as a closed pair; for Venus it means the secondary indicator and the primary one are the same bhava.
  • Mars, dispositor of the 1st, also owns the 8th — so whatever Venus does in the 1st is routed through a lord whose other business is longevity.

The body reading. The 1st bhava is head, brain, skull, complexion and overall constitution, while Venus governs kidneys, the reproductive system, the throat, skin lustre and the eyes; medical astrology reads the 1st for Venus where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When Venus Is Actually in Your 1st House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 1st house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when Venus is in it. Venus covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 1st-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 65 days, which belongs to a Libra ascendant, for whom the 1st house is Libra. Some of these stretches include a retrograde stint, which is why a few rows carry two spells in the same rashi rather than one.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.

Reading the 1st in an Actual Chart

Everything above is structural — true of Venus in the 1st in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Venus actually occupies: the 1st house is Aries for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 1st house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Venus there. And the dashaVenus’s mahadasha runs 20 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

The Other Grahas in the 1st House

Venus in the Other Bhavas

For the doctrine behind the terms above — what a kendra is, how digbala is reckoned, the bhava’s own strong and afflicted readings and its remedies — see the 1st house in full. For Venus itself, its dignities, dasha and remedies, see Venus, and for the Kaal Purush placement in detail, Venus in Aries.

Is Venus in Your 1st House?

The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi Venus occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
