graha in rashi
Venus in Libra (Shukra in Tula)
Benefic · Air · Chara · ruled by Venus
Venus in Libra is in its own sign, and the first part of the sign, 0°–15°, is its moolatrikona. Libra is ruled by Venus, which is Venus itself — so the graha here is its own dispositor, and there is no third party to route its results through.
Libra is a chara air sign governing the lower abdomen and kidneys, and Venus is reckoned benefic, governing love, marriage, beauty, luxury. Whatever Venus signifies — marriage, the wife in a man's chart, vehicles, art, music, luxury, hotels, cosmetics — is what this rashi’s restlessness moves along.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Libra: in its own sign.
- Venus’s own signs: Taurus and Libra.
- Exalted in: Pisces, deepest at 27°.
- Debilitated in: Virgo.
- Moolatrikona: Libra 0°–15°.
- Libra’s lord: Venus. Libra exalts Saturn at 20° and debilitates Sun at 10°.
What Venus Aspects From Libra
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Venus has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Libra, that lands on:
- 7th from Libra → Aries (Mesha), ruled by Mars.
Aries is not one of Venus’s own rashis, so the single aspect Venus throws from Libra lands on Mars’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.
How Far Libra Is From Venus’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Taurus and from Libra, Libra falls as follows:
- 6th from Taurus — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
- 1st from Libra — the same rashi. This is Venus’s own rashi, so there is no displacement at all.
- 8th from Pisces, the sign of its exaltation — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
- 2nd from Virgo, the sign of its fall — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
- Opposite Libra stands Aries, ruled by Mars — the rashi Venus faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company Venus Keeps in Libra
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Libra runs from 180°00′ to 210°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Oct 18 – Nov 16 — faces west, is classed male, and as an air sign is of the Shudra varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Venus — which is Venus itself.
- Exalts Saturn at 20° — not Venus, so the strongest single degree of Libra is not Venus’s.
- Debilitates Sun at 10°, a different graha from Venus.
- Moolatrikona of Venus, 0°–15° — and that is Venus, so part of this sign is Venus’s strongest ground short of exaltation.
So Venus shares Libra with both an exaltation degree and a debilitation degree belonging to other grahas. A graha sitting close to either point is read against it, which is a reason the exact degree matters more in Libra than in a sign carrying neither. Libra’s own traits — diplomatic, fair-minded, social, indecisive, gracious — are the register in which love, marriage, beauty, luxury gets expressed when Venus sits here.
The Nine Padas Venus Crosses in Libra
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Libra holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Chitra (padas 3, 4), Swati and Vishakha (padas 1, 2, 3).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 180°00′–183°20′ | Chitra pada 3 | Mars | Libra |
| 2 | 183°20′–186°40′ | Chitra pada 4 | Mars | Scorpio |
| 3 | 186°40′–190°00′ | Swati pada 1 | Rahu | Sagittarius |
| 4 | 190°00′–193°20′ | Swati pada 2 | Rahu | Capricorn |
| 5 | 193°20′–196°40′ | Swati pada 3 | Rahu | Aquarius |
| 6 | 196°40′–200°00′ | Swati pada 4 | Rahu | Pisces |
| 7 | 200°00′–203°20′ | Vishakha pada 1 | Jupiter | Aries |
| 8 | 203°20′–206°40′ | Vishakha pada 2 | Jupiter | Taurus |
| 9 | 206°40′–210°00′ | Vishakha pada 3 | Jupiter | Gemini |
Venus rules Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, and none of them falls in Libra. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Venus has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Venus. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Mars, Rahu, Jupiter.
When Venus Is Actually in Libra
This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Venus occupies Libra for 3 stretches inside 2026 and 2027:
- 2 September 2026 to 6 November 2026 — 65 days, after which Venus moves on to Virgo.
- 22 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 — 40 days, after which Venus moves on to Scorpio.
- 3 October 2027 to 27 October 2027 — 24 days, after which Venus moves on to Scorpio.
Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.
Venus also combusts: within 10° of the Sun when direct, 8° when retrograde. A combust Venus in Libra is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading Venus in Libra
Venus signifies marriage, the wife in a man's chart, vehicles, art, music, luxury, hotels, cosmetics. In Libra those significations are filtered through a chara air sign ruled by Venus, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In its own sign the graha needs no permission from anyone; it delivers its significations directly.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Libra occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Venus is reckoned benefic, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 11th and 12th while it struggles in the 6th and 8th, and the 7th for a benefic carrying kendradhipati dosha — so Venus in Libra is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Libra is the 7th bhava, so Venus in the 7th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Libra transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what Venus does when strong and when afflicted, its 20-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Venus (Shukra) page. The short form: Venus’s day is Friday, its gemstone is Diamond / White Sapphire, its mantra is Om Shukraya Namah, and its deities are Lakshmi, invoked through the Shri Suktam.
