Saturn in Libra (Shani in Tula)
Malefic · Air · Chara · ruled by Venus
Saturn in Libra is exalted — deepest at 20°. Libra is ruled by Venus, and Saturn counts Venus a friend.
The relationship runs both ways: Saturn counts Venus a friend, and Venus counts Saturn a friend. A mutual reading is the simpler case — the graha and its host agree about each other, so the placement does not change character depending on which of the two is stronger.
Libra is a chara air sign governing the lower abdomen and kidneys, and Saturn is reckoned malefic, governing karma, discipline, longevity, hard work. Whatever Saturn signifies — longevity, karma, labour, servants, old age, iron, coal, and delay itself — is what this rashi’s restlessness moves along. Exaltation is not a guarantee of a good outcome either — it says the graha is at full strength, and a malefic at full strength is still a malefic.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Libra: exalted, deepest at 20°.
- Saturn’s own signs: Capricorn and Aquarius.
- Exalted in: Libra, deepest at 20°.
- Debilitated in: Aries.
- Moolatrikona: Aquarius 0°–20°.
- Libra’s lord: Venus. Libra exalts Saturn at 20° and debilitates Sun at 10°.
What Saturn Aspects From Libra
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Saturn adds the 3rd and the 10th — Saturn alone aspects the 3rd and 10th. Counting from Libra, that lands on:
- 3rd from Libra → Sagittarius (Dhanu), ruled by Jupiter.
- 7th from Libra → Aries (Mesha), ruled by Mars.
- 10th from Libra → Cancer (Karka), ruled by Moon.
None of the 3 signs Saturn aspects from Libra is ruled by Saturn, so its drishti here falls entirely on territory belonging to other grahas. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.
How Far Libra Is From Saturn’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Capricorn and from Aquarius, Libra falls as follows:
- 10th from Capricorn — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- 9th from Aquarius — a trine, the easiest of the distances.
- 1st from Libra, the sign of its exaltation — the same rashi.
- 7th from Aries, the sign of its fall — a straight opposition.
- Opposite Libra stands Aries, ruled by Mars — the rashi Saturn faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company Saturn Keeps in Libra
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Libra runs from 180°00′ to 210°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Oct 18 – Nov 16 — faces west, is classed male, and as an air sign is of the Shudra varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Venus.
- Exalts Saturn at 20° — that is this page: the exaltation degree in Libra belongs to Saturn.
- Debilitates Sun at 10°, a different graha from Saturn.
- Moolatrikona of Venus, 0°–15°.
So Libra carries a fixed dignity point inside it, and the closer Saturn sits to that degree the more the reading is dominated by it rather than by the sign as a whole. Libra’s own traits — diplomatic, fair-minded, social, indecisive, gracious — are the register in which karma, discipline, longevity, hard work gets expressed when Saturn sits here.
The Nine Padas Saturn Crosses in Libra
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Libra holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Chitra (padas 3, 4), Swati and Vishakha (padas 1, 2, 3).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 180°00′–183°20′ | Chitra pada 3 | Mars | Libra |
| 2 | 183°20′–186°40′ | Chitra pada 4 | Mars | Scorpio |
| 3 | 186°40′–190°00′ | Swati pada 1 | Rahu | Sagittarius |
| 4 | 190°00′–193°20′ | Swati pada 2 | Rahu | Capricorn |
| 5 | 193°20′–196°40′ | Swati pada 3 | Rahu | Aquarius |
| 6 | 196°40′–200°00′ | Swati pada 4 | Rahu | Pisces |
| 7 | 200°00′–203°20′ | Vishakha pada 1 | Jupiter | Aries |
| 8 | 203°20′–206°40′ | Vishakha pada 2 | Jupiter | Taurus |
| 9 | 206°40′–210°00′ | Vishakha pada 3 | Jupiter | Gemini |
Saturn rules Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and none of them falls in Libra. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Saturn has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Venus, and through what Venus makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Mars, Rahu, Jupiter.
When Saturn Is Actually in Libra
Here is the honest answer, and it is a computed one: Saturn does not enter Libra at any point in 2026 or 2027. The DE421 ephemeris this site computes from covers those two years, and across the whole of it Saturn never crosses into this rashi.
The negative is worth turning into a measurement, because it is one. On 1 January 2026, the first day the tables cover, Saturn stands in Pisces; by 1 January 2028 it has reached Pisces, having gone round and returned to the same rashi. From Pisces, Libra is a further seven signs ahead — that is how much of the zodiac still separates Saturn from this rashi when the tables run out.
That is a property of orbital period rather than an accident. Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to travel the zodiac, so it spends roughly two and a half years in each sign and a two-year window can only ever reach a few of them. This page is therefore about the placement as a natal condition — what it means in a chart born with it — and not about a transit you can wait for.
Where Saturn does go in this window is worth knowing, and it is on the Saturn page; the monthly readings under our rashifal archive date every ingress it does make.
Saturn also combusts: within 15° of the Sun. A combust Saturn in Libra is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading Saturn in Libra
Saturn signifies longevity, karma, labour, servants, old age, iron, coal, and delay itself. In Libra those significations are filtered through a chara air sign ruled by Venus, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. At exaltation the significations arrive at full strength and largely undiluted.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Libra occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Saturn is reckoned malefic, and it gains in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th — so Saturn in Libra is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Libra is the 7th bhava, so Saturn in the 7th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Libra transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what Saturn does when strong and when afflicted, its 19-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Saturn (Shani) page. The short form: Saturn’s day is Saturday, its gemstone is Blue Sapphire (Neelam), its mantra is Om Shanaishcharaya Namah, and its deities are Shani, and Hanuman, who is held to control him.
