graha in rashi

Saturn in Aquarius (Shani in Kumbha)

Malefic · Air · Sthira · ruled by Saturn

Saturn in Aquarius is in its own sign, and the first part of the sign, 0°–20°, is its moolatrikona. Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, which is Saturn itself — so the graha here is its own dispositor, and there is no third party to route its results through.

Aquarius is a sthira air sign governing the calves and ankles, and Saturn is reckoned malefic, governing karma, discipline, longevity, hard work. Whatever Saturn signifies longevity, karma, labour, servants, old age, iron, coal, and delay itself — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Aquarius: in its own sign.
  • Saturn’s own signs: Capricorn and Aquarius.
  • Exalted in: Libra, deepest at 20°.
  • Debilitated in: Aries.
  • Moolatrikona: Aquarius 0°–20°.
  • Aquarius’s lord: Saturn. Aquarius exalts no graha and debilitates no graha.

What Saturn Aspects From Aquarius

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Saturn adds the 3rd and the 10thSaturn alone aspects the 3rd and 10th. Counting from Aquarius, that lands on:

  • 3rd from AquariusAries (Mesha), ruled by Mars.
  • 7th from AquariusLeo (Simha), ruled by Sun.
  • 10th from AquariusScorpio (Vrishchika), ruled by Mars.

None of the 3 signs Saturn aspects from Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, so its drishti here falls entirely on territory belonging to other grahas. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.

How Far Aquarius Is From Saturn’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Capricorn and from Aquarius, Aquarius falls as follows:

  • 2nd from Capricorna 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
  • 1st from Aquariusthe same rashi. This is Saturn’s own rashi, so there is no displacement at all.
  • 5th from Libra, the sign of its exaltationa trine, the easiest of the distances.
  • 11th from Aries, the sign of its fall — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
  • Opposite Aquarius stands Leo, ruled by Sun — the rashi Saturn faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company Saturn Keeps in Aquarius

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Aquarius runs from 300°00′ to 330°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Feb 13 – Mar 14 — faces west, is classed male, and as an air sign is of the Shudra varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Saturn — which is Saturn itself.
  • Exalts no graha. Aquarius is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
  • Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Aquarius.
  • Moolatrikona of Saturn, 0°–20° — and that is Saturn, so part of this sign is Saturn’s strongest ground short of exaltation.

So Aquarius holds neither an exaltation nor a debilitation degree, which makes it one of the more neutral hosts in the zodiac. There is no fixed point inside it for Saturn to be measured against, and the reading falls back on Saturn and on the pada. Aquarius’s own traits — innovative, independent, humanitarian, eccentric, progressive — are the register in which karma, discipline, longevity, hard work gets expressed when Saturn sits here.

The Nine Padas Saturn Crosses in Aquarius

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Aquarius holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Dhanishta (padas 3, 4), Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada (padas 1, 2, 3).

8323°20′326°40′Purva Bhadrapada pada 2JupiterTaurus
9326°40′330°00′Purva Bhadrapada pada 3JupiterGemini

Saturn rules Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and none of them falls in Aquarius. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Saturn has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Saturn. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Mars, Rahu, Jupiter.

When Saturn Is Actually in Aquarius

Here is the honest answer, and it is a computed one: Saturn does not enter Aquarius at any point in 2026 or 2027. The DE421 ephemeris this site computes from covers those two years, and across the whole of it Saturn never crosses into this rashi.

The negative is worth turning into a measurement, because it is one. On 1 January 2026, the first day the tables cover, Saturn stands in Pisces; by 1 January 2028 it has reached Pisces, having gone round and returned to the same rashi. From Pisces, Aquarius is a further eleven signs ahead — that is how much of the zodiac still separates Saturn from this rashi when the tables run out.

That is a property of orbital period rather than an accident. Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to travel the zodiac, so it spends roughly two and a half years in each sign and a two-year window can only ever reach a few of them. This page is therefore about the placement as a natal condition — what it means in a chart born with it — and not about a transit you can wait for.

Where Saturn does go in this window is worth knowing, and it is on the Saturn page; the monthly readings under our rashifal archive date every ingress it does make.

Saturn also combusts: within 15° of the Sun. A combust Saturn in Aquarius is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading Saturn in Aquarius

Saturn signifies longevity, karma, labour, servants, old age, iron, coal, and delay itself. In Aquarius those significations are filtered through a sthira air sign ruled by Saturn, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In its own sign the graha needs no permission from anyone; it delivers its significations directly.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Aquarius occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Saturn is reckoned malefic, and it gains in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th — so Saturn in Aquarius is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Aquarius is the 11th bhava, so Saturn in the 11th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Aquarius transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what Saturn does when strong and when afflicted, its 19-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Saturn (Shani) page. The short form: Saturn’s day is Saturday, its gemstone is Blue Sapphire (Neelam), its mantra is Om Shanaishcharaya Namah, and its deities are Shani, and Hanuman, who is held to control him.
