Rahu in Aquarius (Rahu in Kumbha)

Malefic (shadow) · Air · Sthira · ruled by Saturn

Rahu in Aquarius is in a sign it co-lords. Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, and Rahu counts Saturn a friend.

The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Rahu regards Saturn as a friend, but Saturn regards Rahu as neutral. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means Rahu settles into Aquarius more readily than the host reciprocates, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.

Aquarius is a sthira air sign governing the calves and ankles, and Rahu is reckoned malefic, governing desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains. Whatever Rahu signifies foreign lands and foreigners, technology, aviation, speculation, politics, sudden and unearned gain — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Aquarius: in a sign it co-lords.
  • Rahu’s own sign: None — Rahu co-lords Aquarius and is said to act as its dispositor. The standard scheme gives the nodes no rashi of their own; what is quoted is a co-lordship, and it is not universally accepted.
  • Exalted in: Taurus by the most common reckoning; Gemini in others.
  • Debilitated in: Scorpio by the same reckoning; Sagittarius in others.
  • Moolatrikona: Not assigned in the standard system.
  • Aquarius’s lord: Saturn. Aquarius exalts no graha and debilitates no graha.

One honest caveat, because it applies to Rahu specifically. The standard exaltation table covers the seven grahas and does not assign the nodes a dignity at all; what is quoted above is the most common reckoning, and other traditions give a different sign. The rashi tables on this site record only the seven, which is why they and the graha tables disagree here and nowhere else. Treat a nodal “exaltation” as one school’s convention rather than a settled fact, and weigh the node by house, dispositor and dasha instead.

What Rahu Aspects From Aquarius

Rahu is given no aspect of its own by the classical texts, and the traditions that do assign one do not agree with each other — many lend it Jupiter’s trinal 5th, 7th and 9th, others none at all. So this page does not print a list of signs Rahu aspects from Aquarius: doing so would be asserting a convention as a fact. What Rahu in Aquarius does do is take on the character of its dispositor, Saturn, and act through wherever Saturn sits in the chart. That is the reading to make, and it needs the whole chart.

The Axis: Rahu in Aquarius Means Ketu in Leo

The nodes are not two independent bodies. They are the two ends of one line — the intersections of the Moon’s orbit with the ecliptic — and they are always exactly six rashis apart. So Rahu in Aquarius is not a placement you can read on its own: it fixes Ketu in Leo, ruled by the Sun, and the axis has to be read as a pair.

That gives this particular axis two dispositors: Saturn for Rahu and the Sun for Ketu. Here they are different grahas, so the two ends of the axis answer to different masters and can be in very unequal condition. Whichever end carries the stronger dispositor tends to be where the axis actually delivers, and the classical reading is that Rahu amplifies while Ketu empties — the same axis produces excess at one end and detachment at the other.

For the other end of this axis, see Ketu in Leo.

How Far Aquarius Is From Rahu’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Aquarius (a co-lordship rather than an ownership, as noted above), Aquarius falls as follows:

  • 1st from Aquariusthe same rashi. This is Rahu’s own rashi, so there is no displacement at all.
  • 10th from Taurus, the sign of its exaltation (on the commoner reckoning — this one is disputed)a square, both of them kendra houses.
  • 4th from Scorpio, the sign of its fall — a square, both of them kendra houses.
  • Opposite Aquarius stands Leo, ruled by Sun — the rashi Rahu faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company Rahu Keeps in Aquarius

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Aquarius runs from 300°00′ to 330°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Feb 13 – Mar 14 — faces west, is classed male, and as an air sign is of the Shudra varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Saturn.
  • Exalts no graha. Aquarius is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
  • Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Aquarius.
  • Moolatrikona of Saturn, 0°–20°.

So Aquarius holds neither an exaltation nor a debilitation degree, which makes it one of the more neutral hosts in the zodiac. There is no fixed point inside it for Rahu to be measured against, and the reading falls back on Saturn and on the pada. Aquarius’s own traits — innovative, independent, humanitarian, eccentric, progressive — are the register in which desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains gets expressed when Rahu sits here.

The Nine Padas Rahu Crosses in Aquarius

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Aquarius holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Dhanishta (padas 3, 4), Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada (padas 1, 2, 3).

Rahu rules Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha, and one of them falls inside Aquarius: Shatabhisha. Those degrees are the part of Aquarius where Rahu is on its own ground regardless of what the sign lord thinks of it — a nakshatra lordship is a second, finer layer of dignity, and it does not have to agree with the first.

When Rahu Is Actually in Aquarius

This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Rahu occupies Aquarius for one stretch inside 2026 and 2027:

  • 1 January 2026 to 5 December 2026338 days. This stretch was already running when the computed window opens, so its true start lies before 2026, after which Rahu moves on to Capricorn.

Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.

Reading Rahu in Aquarius

Rahu signifies foreign lands and foreigners, technology, aviation, speculation, politics, sudden and unearned gain. In Aquarius those significations are filtered through a sthira air sign ruled by Saturn, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In its own sign the graha needs no permission from anyone; it delivers its significations directly.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Aquarius occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Rahu is reckoned malefic and is a shadow graha with no disc of its own, and it gains in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th — so Rahu in Aquarius is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Aquarius is the 11th bhava, so Rahu in the 11th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Aquarius transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what Rahu does when strong and when afflicted, its 18-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Rahu (Rahu) page. The short form: Rahu’s day is Saturday, its gemstone is Hessonite (Gomed), its mantra is Om Raam Rahave Namah, and its deities are Durga, and Bhairava.
