Mars in Aquarius (Mangal in Kumbha)
Malefic · Air · Sthira · ruled by Saturn
Mars in Aquarius is in a neutral sign. Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, and Mars counts Saturn neutral.
The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Mars regards Saturn as neutral, but Saturn regards Mars as an enemy. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means Mars settles into Aquarius more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.
Aquarius is a sthira air sign governing the calves and ankles, and Mars is reckoned malefic, governing energy, courage, siblings, property. Whatever Mars signifies — younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Aquarius: in a neutral sign.
- Mars’s own signs: Aries and Scorpio.
- Exalted in: Capricorn, deepest at 28°.
- Debilitated in: Cancer.
- Moolatrikona: Aries 0°–12°.
- Aquarius’s lord: Saturn. Aquarius exalts no graha and debilitates no graha.
What Mars Aspects From Aquarius
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Mars adds the 4th and the 8th — Mars alone aspects the 4th and 8th. Counting from Aquarius, that lands on:
- 4th from Aquarius → Taurus (Vrishabha), ruled by Venus.
- 7th from Aquarius → Leo (Simha), ruled by Sun.
- 8th from Aquarius → Virgo (Kanya), ruled by Mercury.
None of the 3 signs Mars aspects from Aquarius is ruled by Mars, so its drishti here falls entirely on territory belonging to other grahas. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.
How Far Aquarius Is From Mars’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Aries and from Scorpio, Aquarius falls as follows:
- 11th from Aries — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
- 4th from Scorpio — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- 2nd from Capricorn, the sign of its exaltation — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
- 8th from Cancer, the sign of its fall — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
- Opposite Aquarius stands Leo, ruled by Sun — the rashi Mars faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company Mars Keeps in Aquarius
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Aquarius runs from 300°00′ to 330°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Feb 13 – Mar 14 — faces west, is classed male, and as an air sign is of the Shudra varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Saturn.
- Exalts no graha. Aquarius is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
- Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Aquarius.
- Moolatrikona of Saturn, 0°–20°.
So Aquarius holds neither an exaltation nor a debilitation degree, which makes it one of the more neutral hosts in the zodiac. There is no fixed point inside it for Mars to be measured against, and the reading falls back on Saturn and on the pada. Aquarius’s own traits — innovative, independent, humanitarian, eccentric, progressive — are the register in which energy, courage, siblings, property gets expressed when Mars sits here.
The Nine Padas Mars Crosses in Aquarius
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Aquarius holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Dhanishta (padas 3, 4), Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada (padas 1, 2, 3).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 300°00′–303°20′ | Dhanishta pada 3 | Mars ← | Libra |
| 2 | 303°20′–306°40′ | Dhanishta pada 4 | Mars ← | Scorpio |
| 3 | 306°40′–310°00′ | Shatabhisha pada 1 | Rahu | Sagittarius |
| 4 | 310°00′–313°20′ | Shatabhisha pada 2 | Rahu | Capricorn |
| 5 | 313°20′–316°40′ | Shatabhisha pada 3 | Rahu | Aquarius |
| 6 | 316°40′–320°00′ | Shatabhisha pada 4 | Rahu | Pisces |
| 7 | 320°00′–323°20′ | Purva Bhadrapada pada 1 | Jupiter | Aries |
| 8 | 323°20′–326°40′ | Purva Bhadrapada pada 2 | Jupiter | Taurus |
| 9 | 326°40′–330°00′ | Purva Bhadrapada pada 3 | Jupiter | Gemini |
Mars rules Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta, and one of them falls inside Aquarius: Dhanishta (padas 3, 4). Those degrees are the part of Aquarius where Mars is on its own ground regardless of what the sign lord thinks of it — a nakshatra lordship is a second, finer layer of dignity, and it does not have to agree with the first.
When Mars Is Actually in Aquarius
This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Mars occupies Aquarius for one stretch inside 2026 and 2027:
- 23 February 2026 to 2 April 2026 — 38 days, after which Mars moves on to Pisces.
Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.
Mars also combusts: within 17° of the Sun — the widest orb of any graha. A combust Mars in Aquarius is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading Mars in Aquarius
Mars signifies younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces. In Aquarius those significations are filtered through a sthira air sign ruled by Saturn, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a neutral sign they are neither helped nor hindered, which makes everything else in the chart decide.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Aquarius occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Mars is reckoned malefic, and it gains in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th — so Mars in Aquarius is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Aquarius is the 11th bhava, so Mars in the 11th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Aquarius transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what Mars does when strong and when afflicted, its 7-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Mars (Mangal) page. The short form: Mars’s day is Tuesday, its gemstone is Red Coral (Moonga), its mantra is Om Mangalaya Namah, and its deities are Hanuman, and Kartikeya.
