Mars in the 11th House

Mars, a malefic graha signifying younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces, placed in the bhava of gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — that pairing is the whole of what Mars in the 11th house means before a chart is opened. The 11th house does not look to Mars for its significations though — it looks to Jupiter for gains — so Mars here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 11th Is Aquarius

In the natural chart the 11th house is Aquarius, so Mars here is in a neutral sign. The bhava answers to Saturn, and the two do not read each other the same way: Mars counts Saturn neutral, while Saturn counts Mars an enemy — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 11th delivers on income and gains, not merely how much of it arrives. Aquarius is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and the first, second and third padas of Purva Bhadrapada, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. Mars lords Dhanishta among the three, so Mars in the 11th is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls in that nakshatra’s third and fourth padas — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between Mars and this bhava’s income and gains.

What the 11th House’s Classification Does to Mars

The 11th is classified upachaya (malefics gain here); panapara (succedent). Set against Mars, a malefic graha, that classification produces:

• Upachaya. The 11th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Mars is reckoned malefic, so the rule applies directly: on income and gains a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.

Mars’s own preferred bhavas are the 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th, and the 11th is among them — Mars is a malefic and therefore gains in the Upachaya houses, giving construction instead of destruction. So the classification of the 11th and the disposition of Mars point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.

Directional strength. Mars gains digbala in the 10th, which is a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 11th — so in the 11th the directional component of Mars’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas Mars Reaches From the 11th

Besides the 7th that every graha casts, Mars adds the 4th and 8th, so from the 11th it reaches three bhavas:

• The 2nd, wealth, family, speech, food, accumulated assets, early childhood, immediate family — the 4th from the 11th.
• The 5th, intelligence, children, creativity, romance, speculation, past-life merit (Poorva Punya) — the 7th from the 11th.
• The 6th, enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — the 8th from the 11th. Mars is documented as doing well in the 6th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

Where the 11th Sits Relative to Mars’s Own Bhavas

• Aries, which Mars owns, is the 1st — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 11th.
• Scorpio, which Mars owns, is the 8th — a square, both of them kendra positions from the 11th.
• Mars exalts in Capricorn, the 10th — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 11th.
• Mars falls in Cancer, the 4th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 11th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 11th gives the 9th, fortune, dharma, higher education, father, long-distance travel, gurus, philosophy — a Parashari extension, read as Mars’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Saturn, dispositor of the 11th, also owns the 10th — so whatever Mars does in the 11th is routed through a lord whose other business is career and profession.

The body reading. The 11th bhava is shins, calves, ankles and the left ear, while Mars governs muscle, bone marrow, red blood cells, the gall bladder and the forehead; medical astrology reads the 11th for Mars where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. When Mars Is Actually in Your 11th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 11th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when Mars is in it. Mars covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 11th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 118 days, which belongs to a Libra ascendant, for whom the 11th house is Leo. Some of these stretches include a retrograde stint, which is why a few rows carry two spells in the same rashi rather than one.
