graha in bhava
Mars in the 6th House
शत्रु भाव · Mangal · Virgo under Kaal Purush · in an enemy's sign
Mars, a malefic graha signifying younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces, placed in the bhava of enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — that pairing is the whole of what Mars in the 6th house means before a chart is opened. It is a closer fit than most: the 6th house counts Mars among its own natural significators, the karaka it is read through for conflict and disease. A significator sitting in the bhava it signifies is read more literally than any other placement, because the graha and the house are asking the same question.
Under Kaal Purush the 6th Is Virgo
In the natural chart the 6th house is Virgo, so Mars here is in an enemy's sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two do not read each other the same way: Mars counts Mercury an enemy, while Mercury counts Mars neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 6th delivers on health and diseases, not merely how much of it arrives. Virgo is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and the first and second padas of Chitra, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. Mars lords Chitra among the three, so Mars in the 6th is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls in that nakshatra’s first and second padas — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between Mars and this bhava’s health and diseases.
What the 6th House’s Classification Does to Mars
The 6th is classified dusthana (malefic house); upachaya (malefics gain here). Set against Mars, a malefic graha, that classification produces:
- Dusthana. The 6th is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is energy, courage, siblings, property — while what gets used is Mars’s capacity to endure health and diseases rather than to enjoy it.
- Upachaya. The 6th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Mars is reckoned malefic, so the rule applies directly: on health and diseases a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.
Mars’s own preferred bhavas are the 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th, and the 6th is among them — Mars is a malefic and therefore gains in the Upachaya houses, giving construction instead of destruction. So the classification of the 6th and the disposition of Mars point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.
Directional strength. Mars gains digbala in the 10th, which is a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 6th — so in the 6th the directional component of Mars’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.
Which Bhavas Mars Reaches From the 6th
Besides the 7th that every graha casts, Mars adds the 4th and 8th, so from the 6th it reaches three bhavas:
- The 9th, fortune, dharma, higher education, father, long-distance travel, gurus, philosophy — the 4th from the 6th.
- The 12th, expenses, foreign lands, isolation, spiritual liberation (moksha), losses, hidden enemies — the 7th from the 6th. Mars is documented as struggling in the 12th, so this aspect lands as pressure on a bhava it is uneasy in.
- The 1st, self, body, personality, life path, first impressions, head and physical appearance — the 8th from the 6th. Mars is documented as struggling in the 1st, so this aspect lands as pressure on a bhava it is uneasy in.
Where the 6th Sits Relative to Mars’s Own Bhavas
- Aries, which Mars owns, is the 1st — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 6th.
- Scorpio, which Mars owns, is the 8th — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 6th.
- Mars exalts in Capricorn, the 10th — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 6th.
- Mars falls in Cancer, the 4th — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 6th.
- Bhavat bhavam from the 6th gives the 11th, gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — a Parashari extension, read as Mars’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
- Mercury, dispositor of the 6th, also owns the 3rd — so whatever Mars does in the 6th is routed through a lord whose other business is younger siblings.
The body reading. The 6th bhava is lower abdomen, small intestine, kidneys and the waist, while Mars governs muscle, bone marrow, red blood cells, the gall bladder and the forehead; medical astrology reads the 6th for Mars where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
When Mars Is Actually in Your 6th House
Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 6th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when Mars is in it. Mars covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 6th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 118 days, which belongs to a Pisces ascendant, for whom the 6th house is Leo. Some of these stretches include a retrograde stint, which is why a few rows carry two spells in the same rashi rather than one.
| Ascendant | Your 6th house is | Mars there in 2026–2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Virgo | 5 July 2027 – 24 August 2027 |
| Taurus | Libra | 24 August 2027 – 8 October 2027 |
| Gemini | Scorpio | 8 October 2027 – 18 November 2027 |
| Cancer | Sagittarius | to 16 January 2026; 18 November 2027 – 27 December 2027 |
| Leo | Capricorn | 16 January 2026 – 23 February 2026; from 27 December 2027 |
| Virgo | Aquarius | 23 February 2026 – 2 April 2026 |
| Libra | Pisces | 2 April 2026 – 11 May 2026 |
| Scorpio | Aries | 11 May 2026 – 20 June 2026 |
| Sagittarius | Taurus | 20 June 2026 – 2 August 2026 |
| Capricorn | Gemini | 2 August 2026 – 18 September 2026 |
| Aquarius | Cancer | 18 September 2026 – 12 November 2026; 10 March 2027 – 26 April 2027 |
| Pisces | Leo | 12 November 2026 – 10 March 2027; 26 April 2027 – 5 July 2027 |
Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.
The Classical Reading of Mars in the 6th
Also strong. Surgical skill, competitive success, victory in litigation; can bring accidents and inflammatory illness.
Reading the 6th in an Actual Chart
Everything above is structural — true of Mars in the 6th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Mars actually occupies: the 6th house is Virgo for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 6th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Mars there. And the dasha — Mars’s mahadasha runs 7 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

Is Mars in Your 6th House?
The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi Mars occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
