Mars in the 6th House

Mars, a malefic graha signifying younger siblings, land and property, weapons, surgery, engineering, the armed forces, placed in the bhava of enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — that pairing is the whole of what Mars in the 6th house means before a chart is opened. It is a closer fit than most: the 6th house counts Mars among its own natural significators, the karaka it is read through for conflict and disease. A significator sitting in the bhava it signifies is read more literally than any other placement, because the graha and the house are asking the same question.

Under Kaal Purush the 6th Is Virgo

In the natural chart the 6th house is Virgo, so Mars here is in an enemy's sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two do not read each other the same way: Mars counts Mercury an enemy, while Mercury counts Mars neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 6th delivers on health and diseases, not merely how much of it arrives. Virgo is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and the first and second padas of Chitra, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. Mars lords Chitra among the three, so Mars in the 6th is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls in that nakshatra’s first and second padas — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between Mars and this bhava’s health and diseases.

• Upachaya. The 6th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Mars is reckoned malefic, so the rule applies directly: on health and diseases a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.

Mars’s own preferred bhavas are the 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th, and the 6th is among them — Mars is a malefic and therefore gains in the Upachaya houses, giving construction instead of destruction. So the classification of the 6th and the disposition of Mars point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.

Directional strength. Mars gains digbala in the 10th, which is a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 6th — so in the 6th the directional component of Mars’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

• Scorpio, which Mars owns, is the 8th — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 6th.
• Mars exalts in Capricorn, the 10th — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 6th.
• Mars falls in Cancer, the 4th — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 6th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 6th gives the 11th, gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — a Parashari extension, read as Mars’s secondary indicator for the same matters.

The 6th bhava is lower abdomen, small intestine, kidneys and the waist, while Mars governs muscle, bone marrow, red blood cells, the gall bladder and the forehead; medical astrology reads the 6th for Mars where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 6th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when Mars is in it. Mars covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 6th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 118 days, which belongs to a Pisces ascendant, for whom the 6th house is Leo.
