graha in bhava

Moon in the 6th House

शत्रु भाव · Chandra · Virgo under Kaal Purush · in a friend's sign

The Moon, a benefic while waxing graha signifying mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home, placed in the bhava of enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — that pairing is the whole of what the Moon in the 6th house means before a chart is opened. The 6th house does not look to the Moon for its significations though — it looks to Mars and Saturn for conflict and disease — so the Moon here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 6th Is Virgo

In the natural chart the 6th house is Virgo, so the Moon here is in a friend's sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two do not read each other the same way: the Moon counts Mercury a friend, while Mercury counts the Moon an enemy — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 6th delivers on health and diseases, not merely how much of it arrives. Virgo is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and the first and second padas of Chitra, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. The Moon lords Hasta among the three, so the Moon in the 6th is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls anywhere in that nakshatra — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between the Moon and this bhava’s health and diseases.

What the 6th House’s Classification Does to the Moon

The 6th is classified dusthana (malefic house); upachaya (malefics gain here). Set against the Moon, a benefic while waxing graha, that classification produces:

  • Dusthana. The 6th is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is mind, emotions, mother, intuition — while what gets used is the Moon’s capacity to endure health and diseases rather than to enjoy it.
  • Upachaya. The 6th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. The Moon is not a malefic, so the bonus is not the Moon’s to collect — it is read on ordinary terms in the 6th.

The Moon is documented as struggling in the 6th, 8th, 12th, the 6th included — the dusthanas drain the Moon faster than any other graha. Read that as where the effort goes in the 6th, not as a verdict: the Moon’s dispositor and the dasha decide the outcome.

Directional strength. The Moon gains digbala in the 4th, which is a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 6th — so in the 6th the directional component of the Moon’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas the Moon Reaches From the 6th

The Moon casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 6th means it reaches one bhava:

  • The 12th, expenses, foreign lands, isolation, spiritual liberation (moksha), losses, hidden enemies — the 7th from the 6th. The Moon is documented as struggling in the 12th, so this aspect lands as pressure on a bhava it is uneasy in.

Where the 6th Sits Relative to the Moon’s Own Bhavas

  • Cancer, which the Moon owns, is the 4tha 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 6th.
  • the Moon exalts in Taurus, the 2nda trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 6th.
  • the Moon falls in Scorpio, the 8tha 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 6th.
  • Bhavat bhavam from the 6th gives the 11th, gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — a Parashari extension, read as the Moon’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
  • Mercury, dispositor of the 6th, also owns the 3rd — so whatever the Moon does in the 6th is routed through a lord whose other business is younger siblings.

The body reading. The 6th bhava is lower abdomen, small intestine, kidneys and the waist, while the Moon governs blood, lymph, lungs, chest, stomach lining and all bodily fluids; medical astrology reads the 6th for the Moon where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Moon Is Actually in Your 6th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 6th house, and the ephemeris knows when the Moon is in it — but for the Moon that produces a rhythm, not an event. It crosses all twelve rashis in about 27 days, so it is in your 6th house for a little over two days each month, roughly 27 times across 2026–2027. The counts differ by one from row to row only because the two-year window cuts mid-cycle in some rashis; the length of the stay varies more, from about 52 hours to 61, because the Moon’s speed changes with its distance. At that frequency the 6th house is read for mood and timing rather than for events.

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.

Reading the 6th in an Actual Chart

Everything above is structural — true of the Moon in the 6th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi the Moon actually occupies: the 6th house is Virgo for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 6th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto the Moon there. And the dashathe Moon’s mahadasha runs 10 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does. Where a graha sits in a bhava it is documented as struggling in, as the Moon does in the 6th, the dasha is what decides whether that reads as difficulty or merely as absence.

Is the Moon in Your 6th House?

The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi the Moon occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
