Ketu in the 6th House
शत्रु भाव · Ketu · Virgo under Kaal Purush · in a neutral sign
Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying moksha, past-life skill, renunciation, occult knowledge, medicine, flags and banners, placed in the bhava of enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — that pairing is the whole of what Ketu in the 6th house means before a chart is opened. The 6th house does not look to Ketu for its significations though — it looks to Mars and Saturn for conflict and disease — so Ketu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.
Under Kaal Purush the 6th Is Virgo
In the natural chart the 6th house is Virgo, so Ketu here is in a neutral sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other neutral, so nothing in Ketu’s dealings with the lord of the 6th pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers health and diseases are set by Mercury’s own placement alone. Virgo is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and the first and second padas of Chitra, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. None of the three is Ketu, so Ketu in the 6th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on health and diseases than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Ketu in the same 6th house read differently.
Ketu sits outside the reckoning that verdict comes from. No standard table exalts Ketu anywhere, and the schools that do place Ketu somewhere disagree over where: the exaltation entry reads “Scorpio by the most common reckoning; Sagittarius in others” and the debilitation entry “Taurus by the same reckoning; Gemini in others”. Calling Ketu in a neutral sign in Virgo therefore says how Ketu stands to Mercury, lord of the 6th, and nothing about a dignity Ketu holds in its own right. Read Ketu here from what the 6th governs, health and diseases, from where Mercury sits, and from the 7 years Ketu runs its mahadasha — which is what the rest of this page does.
What the 6th House’s Classification Does to Ketu
The 6th is classified dusthana (malefic house); upachaya (malefics gain here). Set against Ketu, a shadowy malefic graha, that classification produces:
- Dusthana. The 6th is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition — while what gets used is Ketu’s capacity to endure health and diseases rather than to enjoy it.
- Upachaya. The 6th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Ketu is reckoned shadowy malefic, so the rule applies directly: on health and diseases a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.
Ketu’s own preferred bhavas are the 3rd, 6th, 11th, 12th, and the 6th is among them — Ketu is the one graha that does genuinely well in the 12th, the house of moksha. So the classification of the 6th and the disposition of Ketu point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.
Directional strength. Digbala is not defined for Ketu. The four grantor bhavas name the seven classical grahas and no node, and Ketu, having no disc, has no direction in which to be bright. On the 6th that is a measurement which does not reach Ketu rather than one Ketu fails — what decides Ketu in the 6th is that bhava’s own subject, health and diseases, the condition of Mercury, and the 7-year Ketu mahadasha.
Which Bhavas Ketu Reaches From the 6th
No classical text gives Ketu a drishti of its own, and the traditions that supply Ketu one disagree: some lend Ketu the aspects of Mercury, this bhava’s lord, and some give Ketu none at all. So this page prints no aspect list for Ketu in the 6th, the bhava of enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — a list would state one school’s convention as settled. What Ketu does from the 6th instead is take the colour of Mercury and work through wherever Mercury sits, which makes the reach of Ketu here exactly as wide as Mercury’s own placement and no wider.
And it is never one placement. Ketu and Rahu are the two ends of one line, six bhavas apart always, so Ketu in the 6th fixes Rahu in the 12th, the bhava of expenses, foreign lands, isolation, spiritual liberation (moksha), losses, hidden enemies. The axis is read as Ketu inflating the 6th while Rahu empties the 12th — detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition pressed onto health and diseases, and desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains thinning out of expenses and losses, at once. The other end is at Rahu in the 12th house.
Where the 6th Sits Relative to Ketu’s Own Bhavas
- Scorpio, which Ketu owns, is the 8th — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 6th.
- Ketu exalts in Scorpio, the 8th on the commoner reckoning — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 6th. And Ketu owns Scorpio as well as exalting in it, so the 8th is the one bhava carrying both of Ketu’s claims at once.
- Ketu falls in Taurus, the 2nd on the commoner reckoning — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 6th.
- Bhavat bhavam from the 6th gives the 11th, gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — a Parashari extension, read as Ketu’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
- Mercury, dispositor of the 6th, also owns the 3rd — so whatever Ketu does in the 6th is routed through a lord whose other business is younger siblings.
The body reading. The 6th bhava is lower abdomen, small intestine, kidneys and the waist, and Ketu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Ketu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Ketu is undiagnosable illness, skin disease and immune disorder. So Ketu in the 6th is read as those presenting at lower abdomen rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
When Ketu Is Actually in Your 6th House
Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 6th house, and here the ephemeris returns a sharper answer than any essay. Ketu occupies only 2 rashis across 2026–2027, so Ketu transits the 6th house for only 2 of the twelve ascendants in that whole period — Aquarius, Pisces lagnas. For the other 10, general advice about Ketu in the 6th house describes nothing that is happening. The longest unbroken stretch is 338 days, for a Pisces ascendant, whose 6th house is Leo.
| Ascendant | Your 6th house is | Ketu there in 2026–2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Virgo | not in these two years |
| Taurus | Libra | not in these two years |
| Gemini | Scorpio | not in these two years |
| Cancer | Sagittarius | not in these two years |
| Leo | Capricorn | not in these two years |
| Virgo | Aquarius | not in these two years |
| Libra | Pisces | not in these two years |
| Scorpio | Aries | not in these two years |

Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.
The Classical Reading of Ketu in the 6th
One of the classical indications for healing ability and for illness that resists diagnosis.
Reading the 6th in an Actual Chart
Everything above is structural — true of Ketu in the 6th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Ketu actually occupies: the 6th house is Virgo for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 6th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Ketu there. And the dasha — Ketu’s mahadasha runs 7 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.
