graha in bhava
Rahu in the 6th House
शत्रु भाव · Rahu · Virgo under Kaal Purush · in a friend's sign
Rahu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying foreign lands and foreigners, technology, aviation, speculation, politics, sudden and unearned gain, placed in the bhava of enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — that pairing is the whole of what Rahu in the 6th house means before a chart is opened. The 6th house does not look to Rahu for its significations though — it looks to Mars and Saturn for conflict and disease — so Rahu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.
Under Kaal Purush the 6th Is Virgo
In the natural chart the 6th house is Virgo, so Rahu here is in a friend's sign. The bhava answers to Mercury, and the two do not read each other the same way: Rahu counts Mercury a friend, while Mercury counts Rahu neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 6th delivers on health and diseases, not merely how much of it arrives. Virgo is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and the first and second padas of Chitra, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. None of the three is Rahu, so Rahu in the 6th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on health and diseases than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Rahu in the same 6th house read differently.
Rahu sits outside the reckoning that verdict comes from. No standard table exalts Rahu anywhere, and the schools that do place Rahu somewhere disagree over where: the exaltation entry reads “Taurus by the most common reckoning; Gemini in others” and the debilitation entry “Scorpio by the same reckoning; Sagittarius in others”. Calling Rahu in a friend's sign in Virgo therefore says how Rahu stands to Mercury, lord of the 6th, and nothing about a dignity Rahu holds in its own right. Read Rahu here from what the 6th governs, health and diseases, from where Mercury sits, and from the 18 years Rahu runs its mahadasha — which is what the rest of this page does.
What the 6th House’s Classification Does to Rahu
The 6th is classified dusthana (malefic house); upachaya (malefics gain here). Set against Rahu, a shadowy malefic graha, that classification produces:
- Dusthana. The 6th is a house of difficulty, so what suffers is desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains — while what gets used is Rahu’s capacity to endure health and diseases rather than to enjoy it.
- Upachaya. The 6th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Rahu is reckoned shadowy malefic, so the rule applies directly: on health and diseases a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.
Rahu’s own preferred bhavas are the 3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th, and the 6th is among them — the Upachaya houses, where Rahu's appetite becomes ambition instead of obsession. So the classification of the 6th and the disposition of Rahu point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.
Directional strength. Digbala is not defined for Rahu. The four grantor bhavas name the seven classical grahas and no node, and Rahu, having no disc, has no direction in which to be bright. On the 6th that is a measurement which does not reach Rahu rather than one Rahu fails — what decides Rahu in the 6th is that bhava’s own subject, health and diseases, the condition of Mercury, and the 18-year Rahu mahadasha.
Which Bhavas Rahu Reaches From the 6th
No classical text gives Rahu a drishti of its own, and the traditions that supply Rahu one disagree: some lend Rahu the aspects of Mercury, this bhava’s lord, and some give Rahu none at all. So this page prints no aspect list for Rahu in the 6th, the bhava of enemies, diseases, debts, service, daily routine, pets, competition, legal issues — a list would state one school’s convention as settled. What Rahu does from the 6th instead is take the colour of Mercury and work through wherever Mercury sits, which makes the reach of Rahu here exactly as wide as Mercury’s own placement and no wider.
And it is never one placement. Rahu and Ketu are the two ends of one line, six bhavas apart always, so Rahu in the 6th fixes Ketu in the 12th, the bhava of expenses, foreign lands, isolation, spiritual liberation (moksha), losses, hidden enemies. The axis is read as Rahu inflating the 6th while Ketu empties the 12th — desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains pressed onto health and diseases, and detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition thinning out of expenses and losses, at once. The other end is at Ketu in the 12th house.
Where the 6th Sits Relative to Rahu’s Own Bhavas
- Aquarius, which Rahu owns, is the 11th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 6th.
- Rahu exalts in Taurus, the 2nd on the commoner reckoning — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 6th.
- Rahu falls in Scorpio, the 8th on the commoner reckoning — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 6th.
- Bhavat bhavam from the 6th gives the 11th, gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — a Parashari extension, read as Rahu’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
- Mercury, dispositor of the 6th, also owns the 3rd — so whatever Rahu does in the 6th is routed through a lord whose other business is younger siblings.
The body reading. The 6th bhava is lower abdomen, small intestine, kidneys and the waist, and Rahu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Rahu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Rahu is poisoning, phobia, skin disorder and undiagnosable breathing complaints. So Rahu in the 6th is read as those presenting at lower abdomen rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.
When Rahu Is Actually in Your 6th House
Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 6th house, and here the ephemeris returns a sharper answer than any essay. Rahu occupies only 2 rashis across 2026–2027, so Rahu transits the 6th house for only 2 of the twelve ascendants in that whole period — Leo, Virgo lagnas. For the other 10, general advice about Rahu in the 6th house describes nothing that is happening. The longest unbroken stretch is 338 days, for a Virgo ascendant, whose 6th house is Aquarius.
| Ascendant | Your 6th house is | Rahu there in 2026–2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Virgo | not in these two years |
| Taurus | Libra | not in these two years |
| Gemini | Scorpio | not in these two years |
| Cancer | Sagittarius | not in these two years |
| Leo | Capricorn | from 5 December 2026 |
| Virgo | Aquarius | to 5 December 2026 |
| Libra | Pisces | not in these two years |
| Scorpio | Aries | not in these two years |
| Sagittarius | Taurus | not in these two years |
| Capricorn | Gemini | not in these two years |
| Aquarius | Cancer | not in these two years |
| Pisces | Leo | not in these two years |
Sign ingresses computed from the DE421 ephemeris, sidereal Lahiri, as days rather than instants: the ingresses of the slower bodies shift by hours between one ayanamsa and the next, so a printed minute would be false precision. “From” or “to” marks a spell already running when the tables open, or still running when they close.
Reading the 6th in an Actual Chart
Everything above is structural — true of Rahu in the 6th in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Rahu actually occupies: the 6th house is Virgo for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 6th house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Rahu there. And the dasha — Rahu’s mahadasha runs 18 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does.

Is Rahu in Your 6th House?
The table needs one thing from you — your ascendant. A free kundli gives you that, the rashi Rahu occupies, its dignity there, and the dasha you are running: the four things this page says decide the reading.
