Rahu in the 2nd House

Rahu, a shadowy malefic graha signifying foreign lands and foreigners, technology, aviation, speculation, politics, sudden and unearned gain, placed in the bhava of wealth, family, speech, food, accumulated assets, early childhood, immediate family — that pairing is the whole of what Rahu in the 2nd house means before a chart is opened. The 2nd house does not look to Rahu for its significations though — it looks to Jupiter for wealth, Mercury for speech — so Rahu here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 2nd Is Taurus

In the natural chart the 2nd house is Taurus, so Rahu here is exalted on the commoner reckoning. The bhava answers to Venus, and the two do not read each other the same way: Rahu counts Venus a friend, while Venus counts Rahu neutral — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 2nd delivers on savings and wealth, not merely how much of it arrives. Taurus is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Krittika, Rohini and the first and second padas of Mrigashira, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. None of the three is Rahu, so Rahu in the 2nd always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on savings and wealth than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Rahu in the same 2nd house read differently.

Rahu sits outside the reckoning that verdict comes from. No standard table exalts Rahu anywhere, and the schools that do place Rahu somewhere disagree over where: the exaltation entry reads “Taurus by the most common reckoning; Gemini in others” and the debilitation entry “Scorpio by the same reckoning; Sagittarius in others”. Calling Rahu exalted on the commoner reckoning in Taurus therefore says how Rahu stands to Venus, lord of the 2nd, and nothing about a dignity Rahu holds in its own right. What the 2nd House’s Classification Does to Rahu

The 2nd is classified maraka (with the 7th); panapara (succedent). Set against Rahu, a shadowy malefic graha, that classification produces:

• Maraka. The 2nd is one of the two maraka houses, a classification used only in longevity calculation. It says nothing about Rahu on its own and nothing at all about an individual chart.

Rahu is documented as struggling in the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, the 2nd included — Rahu on the ascendant distorts self-image, and in the 9th it undermines dharma. Read that as where the effort goes in the 2nd, not as a verdict: Rahu’s dispositor and the dasha decide the outcome.

Directional strength. Digbala is not defined for Rahu. The four grantor bhavas name the seven classical grahas and no node, and Rahu, having no disc, has no direction in which to be bright. On the 2nd that is a measurement which does not reach Rahu rather than one Rahu fails — what decides Rahu in the 2nd is that bhava’s own subject, savings and wealth, the condition of Venus, and the 18-year Rahu mahadasha.

Which Bhavas Rahu Reaches From the 2nd

No classical text gives Rahu a drishti of its own, and the traditions that supply Rahu one disagree: some lend Rahu the aspects of Venus, this bhava’s lord, and some give Rahu none at all. So this page prints no aspect list for Rahu in the 2nd, the bhava of wealth, family, speech, food, accumulated assets, early childhood, immediate family — a list would state one school’s convention as settled. What Rahu does from the 2nd instead is take the colour of Venus and work through wherever Venus sits, which makes the reach of Rahu here exactly as wide as Venus’s own placement and no wider.

And it is never one placement. Rahu and Ketu are the two ends of one line, six bhavas apart always, so Rahu in the 2nd fixes Ketu in the 8th, the bhava of longevity, sudden events, inheritance, occult, transformation, in-laws, joint finances. The axis is read as Rahu inflating the 2nd while Ketu empties the 8th — desires, illusions, foreign lands, sudden gains pressed onto savings and wealth, and detachment, moksha, past karma, intuition thinning out of longevity, at once. The other end is at Ketu in the 8th house.

Where the 2nd Sits Relative to Rahu’s Own Bhavas

• Aquarius, which Rahu owns, is the 11th — a square, both of them kendra positions from the 2nd.
• The 2nd is also Rahu’s exaltation bhava on the commoner reckoning — Taurus falls here, so two of the strongest claims coincide on the 2nd.
• Rahu falls in Scorpio, the 8th on the commoner reckoning — a direct opposition from the 2nd.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 2nd gives the 3rd, courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — a Parashari extension, read as Rahu’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Venus, dispositor of the 2nd, also owns the 7th — so whatever Rahu does in the 2nd is routed through a lord whose other business is spouse / partner.

The body reading. The 2nd bhava is face, mouth, teeth, tongue, throat and the right eye, and Rahu is assigned no organ at all. The tradition gives Rahu symptoms instead of tissues, and the list recorded for Rahu is poisoning, phobia, skin disorder and undiagnosable breathing complaints. So Rahu in the 2nd is read as those presenting at face rather than as damage done to it. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When Rahu Is Actually in Your 2nd House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 2nd house, and here the ephemeris returns a sharper answer than any essay. Rahu occupies only 2 rashis across 2026–2027, so Rahu transits the 2nd house for only 2 of the twelve ascendants in that whole period — Sagittarius, Capricorn lagnas. For the other 10, general advice about Rahu in the 2nd house describes nothing that is happening. The longest unbroken stretch is 338 days, for a Capricorn ascendant, whose 2nd house is Aquarius.

Reading the 2nd in an Actual Chart

Everything above is structural — true of Rahu in the 2nd in any chart. Four things decide what it does in yours, in this order. The rashi Rahu actually occupies: the 2nd house is Taurus for an Aries ascendant and for no other, because Kaal Purush is the Aries-lagna chart — the table above gives the other eleven. The lord of your 2nd house and its condition, because a bhava delivers through its lord and not through its occupant. The aspects onto Rahu there. And the dasha — Rahu’s mahadasha runs 18 years, and a placement is largely dormant until its own period does. Where a graha sits in a bhava it is documented as struggling in, as Rahu does in the 2nd, the dasha is what decides whether that reads as difficulty or merely as absence.
