Sun in the 2nd House

The Sun, a mild malefic graha signifying father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration, placed in the bhava of wealth, family, speech, food, accumulated assets, early childhood, immediate family — that pairing is the whole of what the Sun in the 2nd house means before a chart is opened. The 2nd house does not look to the Sun for its significations though — it looks to Jupiter for wealth, Mercury for speech — so the Sun here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 2nd Is Taurus

In the natural chart the 2nd house is Taurus, so the Sun here is in an enemy's sign. The bhava answers to Venus, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other an enemy, so nothing in the Sun’s dealings with the lord of the 2nd pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers savings and wealth are set by Venus’s own placement alone. Taurus is spanned by the second, third and fourth padas of Krittika, Rohini and the first and second padas of Mrigashira, lorded in that order by the Sun, the Moon and Mars. The Sun lords Krittika among the three, so the Sun in the 2nd is its own nakshatra dispositor when it falls in that nakshatra’s second, third and fourth padas — the one arrangement in which nothing at all mediates between the Sun and this bhava’s savings and wealth.

What the 2nd House’s Classification Does to the Sun

The 2nd is classified maraka (with the 7th); panapara (succedent). Set against the Sun, a mild malefic graha, that classification produces:

• Maraka. The 2nd is one of the two maraka houses, a classification used only in longevity calculation. It says nothing about the Sun on its own and nothing at all about an individual chart.

The Sun is documented as doing well in the 1st, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th and badly in the 4th, 7th, 12th, and the 2nd is in neither list. That absence is worth something: with no inherited verdict about the Sun here, the reading of the 2nd falls entirely to the rashi, the dispositor and the dasha.

Directional strength. The Sun gains digbala in the 10th, which is a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 2nd — so in the 2nd the directional component of the Sun’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

• the Sun exalts in Aries, the 1st — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 2nd.
• the Sun falls in Libra, the 7th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 2nd.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 2nd gives the 3rd, courage, siblings, short travels, communication, hands and arms, neighbours, hobbies — a Parashari extension, read as the Sun’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Venus, dispositor of the 2nd, also owns the 7th — so whatever the Sun does in the 2nd is routed through a lord whose other business is spouse / partner.

The body reading. The 2nd bhava is face, mouth, teeth, tongue, throat and the right eye, while the Sun governs heart, eyes, bones, head, and general vitality (ojas); medical astrology reads the 2nd for the Sun where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Sun Is Actually in Your 2nd House
