Sun in the 11th House

The Sun, a mild malefic graha signifying father, government, authority, the soul (atma), medicine, administration, placed in the bhava of gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — that pairing is the whole of what the Sun in the 11th house means before a chart is opened. The 11th house does not look to the Sun for its significations though — it looks to Jupiter for gains — so the Sun here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 11th Is Aquarius

In the natural chart the 11th house is Aquarius, so the Sun here is in an enemy's sign. The bhava answers to Saturn, and the two agree about each other: each counts the other an enemy, so nothing in the Sun’s dealings with the lord of the 11th pulls against itself — the terms on which this bhava delivers income and gains are set by Saturn’s own placement alone. Aquarius is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and the first, second and third padas of Purva Bhadrapada, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. None of the three is the Sun, so the Sun in the 11th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on income and gains than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with the Sun in the same 11th house read differently.

What the 11th House’s Classification Does to the Sun

The 11th is classified upachaya (malefics gain here); panapara (succedent). Set against the Sun, a mild malefic graha, that classification produces:

• Upachaya. The 11th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. The Sun is reckoned mild malefic, so the rule applies directly: on income and gains a difficult graha is an advantage rather than a cost.

The Sun’s own preferred bhavas are the 1st, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and the 11th is among them — the Sun does well in the Kendra and Trikona, and gains in the Upachaya. So the classification of the 11th and the disposition of the Sun point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.

Directional strength. The Sun gains digbala in the 10th, which is a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 11th — so in the 11th the directional component of the Sun’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas the Sun Reaches From the 11th

The Sun casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 11th means it reaches one bhava:

• The 5th, intelligence, children, creativity, romance, speculation, past-life merit (Poorva Punya) — the 7th from the 11th. The Sun is documented as doing well in the 5th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

Where the 11th Sits Relative to the Sun’s Own Bhavas

• Leo, which the Sun owns, is the 5th — a direct opposition from the 11th.
• the Sun exalts in Aries, the 1st — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 11th.
• the Sun falls in Libra, the 7th — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 11th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 11th gives the 9th, fortune, dharma, higher education, father, long-distance travel, gurus, philosophy — a Parashari extension, read as the Sun’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Saturn, dispositor of the 11th, also owns the 10th — so whatever the Sun does in the 11th is routed through a lord whose other business is career and profession.

The body reading. The 11th bhava is shins, calves, ankles and the left ear, while the Sun governs heart, eyes, bones, head, and general vitality (ojas); medical astrology reads the 11th for the Sun where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When the Sun Is Actually in Your 11th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 11th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when the Sun is in it. The Sun covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 11th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 32 days, and 2 ascendants are level on it: Leo, for whom the 11th house is Gemini; and Virgo, for whom the 11th house is Cancer.
