Mercury in the 11th House

Mercury, a neutral graha signifying speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students, placed in the bhava of gains, income, elder siblings, fulfilment of desires, friends, networks, aspirations — that pairing is the whole of what Mercury in the 11th house means before a chart is opened. The 11th house does not look to Mercury for its significations though — it looks to Jupiter for gains — so Mercury here colours this bhava’s matters without representing them, and the karaka’s own condition has to be read separately from this placement.

Under Kaal Purush the 11th Is Aquarius

In the natural chart the 11th house is Aquarius, so Mercury here is in a neutral sign. The bhava answers to Saturn, and the two do not read each other the same way: Mercury counts Saturn neutral, while Saturn counts Mercury a friend — so whichever of the two is the stronger in a given chart changes what the 11th delivers on income and gains, not merely how much of it arrives. Aquarius is spanned by the third and fourth padas of Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and the first, second and third padas of Purva Bhadrapada, lorded in that order by Mars, Rahu and Jupiter. None of the three is Mercury, so Mercury in the 11th always reports to another graha at the nakshatra level, and the pada decides which of the three — a finer cut on income and gains than the rashi gives, and the reason two people with Mercury in the same 11th house read differently.

What the 11th House’s Classification Does to Mercury

The 11th is classified upachaya (malefics gain here); panapara (succedent). Set against Mercury, a neutral graha, that classification produces:

• Upachaya. The 11th is one of the four growing houses, where the tradition holds that malefics gain. Mercury is not a malefic, so the bonus is not Mercury’s to collect — it is read on ordinary terms in the 11th.

Mercury’s own preferred bhavas are the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and the 11th is among them — Mercury takes the 1st as its digbala house and thrives in the Kendra and Trikona. So the classification of the 11th and the disposition of Mercury point the same way, which is not true of most of the 108 combinations.

Directional strength. Mercury gains digbala in the 1st, which is a 3/11, the upachaya pairing from the 11th — so in the 11th the directional component of Mercury’s strength has to be made up elsewhere in the shadbala reckoning.

Which Bhavas Mercury Reaches From the 11th

Mercury casts only the drishti every graha has, the 7th from itself, which from the 11th means it reaches one bhava:

• The 5th, intelligence, children, creativity, romance, speculation, past-life merit (Poorva Punya) — the 7th from the 11th. Mercury is documented as doing well in the 5th, so this aspect strengthens a bhava it already suits.

Where the 11th Sits Relative to Mercury’s Own Bhavas

• Gemini, which Mercury owns, is the 3rd — a trine, the most supportive of the distances from the 11th.
• Virgo, which Mercury owns, is the 6th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 11th.
• Mercury exalts in Virgo, the 6th — a 6/8, the shashtashtaka distance the tradition singles out from the 11th. And Mercury owns Virgo as well as exalting in it, so the 6th is the one bhava carrying both of Mercury’s claims at once.
• Mercury falls in Pisces, the 12th — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss pairing from the 11th.
• Bhavat bhavam from the 11th gives the 9th, fortune, dharma, higher education, father, long-distance travel, gurus, philosophy — a Parashari extension, read as Mercury’s secondary indicator for the same matters.
• Saturn, dispositor of the 11th, also owns the 10th — so whatever Mercury does in the 11th is routed through a lord whose other business is career and profession.

The body reading. The 11th bhava is shins, calves, ankles and the left ear, while Mercury governs skin, the nervous system, the vocal apparatus, lungs and hands; medical astrology reads the 11th for Mercury where those two overlap, and their not overlapping is as informative as their doing so. A framework for reading a chart, not a diagnosis.

When Mercury Is Actually in Your 11th House

Your ascendant decides which rashi is your 11th house, and the ephemeris knows exactly when Mercury is in it. Mercury covers all twelve rashis inside 2026–2027, so the 11th-house transit happens for every ascendant — what differs is when, and for how long. The longest unbroken stretch in the table below is 68 days, which belongs to a Leo ascendant, for whom the 11th house is Gemini. Some of these stretches include a retrograde stint, which is why a few rows carry two spells in the same rashi rather than one.
