graha in rashi

Mercury in Taurus (Budh in Vrishabha)

Neutral — takes on its company · Earth · Sthira · ruled by Venus

Mercury in Taurus is in a friend's sign. Taurus is ruled by Venus, and Mercury counts Venus a friend.

The relationship runs both ways: Mercury counts Venus a friend, and Venus counts Mercury a friend. A mutual reading is the simpler case — the graha and its host agree about each other, so the placement does not change character depending on which of the two is stronger.

Taurus is a sthira earth sign governing the face, neck and throat, and Mercury is reckoned neutral, governing intellect, communication, commerce. Whatever Mercury signifies speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Taurus: in a friend's sign.
  • Mercury’s own signs: Gemini and Virgo.
  • Exalted in: Virgo, deepest at 15°.
  • Debilitated in: Pisces.
  • Moolatrikona: Virgo 16°–20°.
  • Taurus’s lord: Venus. Taurus exalts Moon at 3° and debilitates no graha.

What Mercury Aspects From Taurus

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Mercury has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Taurus, that lands on:

  • 7th from TaurusScorpio (Vrishchika), ruled by Mars.

Scorpio is not one of Mercury’s own rashis, so the single aspect Mercury throws from Taurus lands on Mars’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.

How Far Taurus Is From Mercury’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Gemini and from Virgo, Taurus falls as follows:

  • 12th from Geminia 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
  • 9th from Virgoa trine, the easiest of the distances.
  • 9th from Virgo, the sign of its exaltationa trine, the easiest of the distances.
  • 3rd from Pisces, the sign of its fall — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
  • Opposite Taurus stands Scorpio, ruled by Mars — the rashi Mercury faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company Mercury Keeps in Taurus

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Taurus runs from 30°00′ to 60°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about May 15 – Jun 14 — faces south, is classed female, and as an earth sign is of the Vaishya varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Venus.
  • Exalts Moon at 3° — not Mercury, so the strongest single degree of Taurus is not Mercury’s.
  • Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Taurus.
  • Moolatrikona of Moon, 4°–30°.

So Taurus carries a fixed dignity point inside it, and the closer Mercury sits to that degree the more the reading is dominated by it rather than by the sign as a whole. Taurus’s own traits — reliable, patient, devoted, stubborn, sensual — are the register in which intellect, communication, commerce gets expressed when Mercury sits here.

The Nine Padas Mercury Crosses in Taurus

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Taurus holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Krittika (padas 2, 3, 4), Rohini and Mrigashira (padas 1, 2).

PadaSidereal longitudeNakshatraLordNavamsa
130°00′33°20′Krittika pada 2SunCapricorn
233°20′36°40′Krittika pada 3SunAquarius
336°40′40°00′Krittika pada 4SunPisces
440°00′43°20′Rohini pada 1MoonAries
543°20′46°40′Rohini pada 2MoonTaurus
646°40′50°00′Rohini pada 3MoonGemini
750°00′53°20′Rohini pada 4MoonCancer
853°20′56°40′Mrigashira pada 1MarsLeo
956°40′60°00′Mrigashira pada 2MarsVirgo

Mercury rules Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati, and none of them falls in Taurus. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Mercury has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Venus, and through what Venus makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Sun, Moon, Mars.

When Mercury Is Actually in Taurus

This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Mercury occupies Taurus for 2 stretches inside 2026 and 2027:

  • 15 May 2026 to 29 May 202614 days, after which Mercury moves on to Gemini.
  • 6 May 2027 to 23 May 202717 days, after which Mercury moves on to Gemini.

Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.

Mercury also combusts: within 14° of the Sun when direct, 12° when retrograde — and Mercury is never far from the Sun, so combustion is common. A combust Mercury in Taurus is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading Mercury in Taurus

Mercury signifies speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students. In Taurus those significations are filtered through a sthira earth sign ruled by Venus, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a friend’s sign they are supported without being amplified — a quietly workable placement.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Taurus occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Mercury is reckoned neutral, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th, and any close conjunction with a strong malefic — so Mercury in Taurus is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Taurus is the 2nd bhava, so Mercury in the 2nd house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Taurus transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what Mercury does when strong and when afflicted, its 17-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Mercury (Budh) page. The short form: Mercury’s day is Wednesday, its gemstone is Emerald (Panna), its mantra is Om Budhaya Namah, and its deities are Vishnu, and Ganesha for the removal of obstacles to learning.
