Mercury in Capricorn (Budh in Makara)
Neutral — takes on its company · Earth · Chara · ruled by Saturn
Mercury in Capricorn is in a neutral sign. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, and Mercury counts Saturn neutral.
The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Mercury regards Saturn as neutral, but Saturn regards Mercury as a friend. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means Mercury settles into Capricorn more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.
Capricorn is a chara earth sign governing the knees, and Mercury is reckoned neutral, governing intellect, communication, commerce. Whatever Mercury signifies — speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students — is what this rashi’s restlessness moves along.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Capricorn: in a neutral sign.
- Mercury’s own signs: Gemini and Virgo.
- Exalted in: Virgo, deepest at 15°.
- Debilitated in: Pisces.
- Moolatrikona: Virgo 16°–20°.
- Capricorn’s lord: Saturn. Capricorn exalts Mars at 28° and debilitates Jupiter at 5°.
What Mercury Aspects From Capricorn
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Mercury has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Capricorn, that lands on:
- 7th from Capricorn → Cancer (Karka), ruled by Moon.
Cancer is not one of Mercury’s own rashis, so the single aspect Mercury throws from Capricorn lands on Moon’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.
How Far Capricorn Is From Mercury’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Gemini and from Virgo, Capricorn falls as follows:
- 8th from Gemini — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
- 5th from Virgo — a trine, the easiest of the distances.
- 5th from Virgo, the sign of its exaltation — a trine, the easiest of the distances.
- 11th from Pisces, the sign of its fall — a 3/11, the upachaya pairing.
- Opposite Capricorn stands Cancer, ruled by Moon — the rashi Mercury faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company Mercury Keeps in Capricorn
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Capricorn runs from 270°00′ to 300°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Jan 15 – Feb 12 — faces south, is classed female, and as an earth sign is of the Vaishya varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Saturn.
- Exalts Mars at 28° — not Mercury, so the strongest single degree of Capricorn is not Mercury’s.
- Debilitates Jupiter at 5°, a different graha from Mercury.
- Holds no moolatrikona. Capricorn contains no graha’s moolatrikona stretch, so there is no privileged arc within it.
So Mercury shares Capricorn with both an exaltation degree and a debilitation degree belonging to other grahas. A graha sitting close to either point is read against it, which is a reason the exact degree matters more in Capricorn than in a sign carrying neither. Capricorn’s own traits — ambitious, disciplined, patient, practical, reserved — are the register in which intellect, communication, commerce gets expressed when Mercury sits here.
The Nine Padas Mercury Crosses in Capricorn
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Capricorn holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Uttara Ashadha (padas 2, 3, 4), Shravana and Dhanishta (padas 1, 2).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 270°00′–273°20′ | Uttara Ashadha pada 2 | Sun | Capricorn |
| 2 | 273°20′–276°40′ | Uttara Ashadha pada 3 | Sun | Aquarius |
| 3 | 276°40′–280°00′ | Uttara Ashadha pada 4 | Sun | Pisces |
| 4 | 280°00′–283°20′ | Shravana pada 1 | Moon | Aries |
| 5 | 283°20′–286°40′ | Shravana pada 2 | Moon | Taurus |
| 6 | 286°40′–290°00′ | Shravana pada 3 | Moon | Gemini |
| 7 | 290°00′–293°20′ | Shravana pada 4 | Moon | Cancer |
| 8 | 293°20′–296°40′ | Dhanishta pada 1 | Mars | Leo |
| 9 | 296°40′–300°00′ | Dhanishta pada 2 | Mars | Virgo |
Mercury rules Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati, and none of them falls in Capricorn. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Mercury has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Saturn, and through what Saturn makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Sun, Moon, Mars.
When Mercury Is Actually in Capricorn
This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Mercury occupies Capricorn for 3 stretches inside 2026 and 2027:
- 17 January 2026 to 3 February 2026 — 17 days, after which Mercury moves on to Aquarius.
- 10 January 2027 to 28 January 2027 — 18 days, after which Mercury moves on to Aquarius.
- 24 February 2027 to 12 March 2027 — 16 days, entered in retrograde motion, after which Mercury moves on to Aquarius.
More than one stretch is the signature of retrogression: Mercury enters Capricorn, moves on, then loops back across the boundary and re-enters. A chart cast during the second pass is not the same as one cast during the first, because the graha is moving backwards through the same degrees it has already covered.
Mercury also combusts: within 14° of the Sun when direct, 12° when retrograde — and Mercury is never far from the Sun, so combustion is common. A combust Mercury in Capricorn is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading Mercury in Capricorn
Mercury signifies speech, writing, trade, accounts, mathematics, maternal uncles, students. In Capricorn those significations are filtered through a chara earth sign ruled by Saturn, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a neutral sign they are neither helped nor hindered, which makes everything else in the chart decide.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Capricorn occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Mercury is reckoned neutral, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th, and any close conjunction with a strong malefic — so Mercury in Capricorn is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Capricorn is the 10th bhava, so Mercury in the 10th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Capricorn transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what Mercury does when strong and when afflicted, its 17-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Mercury (Budh) page. The short form: Mercury’s day is Wednesday, its gemstone is Emerald (Panna), its mantra is Om Budhaya Namah, and its deities are Vishnu, and Ganesha for the removal of obstacles to learning.
