graha in rashi
Saturn in Capricorn (Shani in Makara)
Malefic · Earth · Chara · ruled by Saturn
Saturn in Capricorn is in its own sign. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, which is Saturn itself — so the graha here is its own dispositor, and there is no third party to route its results through.
Capricorn is a chara earth sign governing the knees, and Saturn is reckoned malefic, governing karma, discipline, longevity, hard work. Whatever Saturn signifies — longevity, karma, labour, servants, old age, iron, coal, and delay itself — is what this rashi’s restlessness moves along.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Capricorn: in its own sign.
- Saturn’s own signs: Capricorn and Aquarius.
- Exalted in: Libra, deepest at 20°.
- Debilitated in: Aries.
- Moolatrikona: Aquarius 0°–20°.
- Capricorn’s lord: Saturn. Capricorn exalts Mars at 28° and debilitates Jupiter at 5°.
What Saturn Aspects From Capricorn
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Saturn adds the 3rd and the 10th — Saturn alone aspects the 3rd and 10th. Counting from Capricorn, that lands on:
- 3rd from Capricorn → Pisces (Meena), ruled by Jupiter.
- 7th from Capricorn → Cancer (Karka), ruled by Moon.
- 10th from Capricorn → Libra (Tula), ruled by Venus.
None of the 3 signs Saturn aspects from Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, so its drishti here falls entirely on territory belonging to other grahas. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.
How Far Capricorn Is From Saturn’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Capricorn and from Aquarius, Capricorn falls as follows:
- 1st from Capricorn — the same rashi. This is Saturn’s own rashi, so there is no displacement at all.
- 12th from Aquarius — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
- 4th from Libra, the sign of its exaltation — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- 10th from Aries, the sign of its fall — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- Opposite Capricorn stands Cancer, ruled by Moon — the rashi Saturn faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company Saturn Keeps in Capricorn
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Capricorn runs from 270°00′ to 300°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Jan 15 – Feb 12 — faces south, is classed female, and as an earth sign is of the Vaishya varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Saturn — which is Saturn itself.
- Exalts Mars at 28° — not Saturn, so the strongest single degree of Capricorn is not Saturn’s.
- Debilitates Jupiter at 5°, a different graha from Saturn.
- Holds no moolatrikona. Capricorn contains no graha’s moolatrikona stretch, so there is no privileged arc within it.
So Saturn shares Capricorn with both an exaltation degree and a debilitation degree belonging to other grahas. A graha sitting close to either point is read against it, which is a reason the exact degree matters more in Capricorn than in a sign carrying neither. Capricorn’s own traits — ambitious, disciplined, patient, practical, reserved — are the register in which karma, discipline, longevity, hard work gets expressed when Saturn sits here.
The Nine Padas Saturn Crosses in Capricorn
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Capricorn holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Uttara Ashadha (padas 2, 3, 4), Shravana and Dhanishta (padas 1, 2).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 270°00′–273°20′ | Uttara Ashadha pada 2 | Sun | Capricorn |
| 2 | 273°20′–276°40′ | Uttara Ashadha pada 3 | Sun | Aquarius |
| 3 | 276°40′–280°00′ | Uttara Ashadha pada 4 | Sun | Pisces |
| 4 | 280°00′–283°20′ | Shravana pada 1 | Moon | Aries |
| 5 | 283°20′–286°40′ | Shravana pada 2 | Moon | Taurus |
| 6 | 286°40′–290°00′ | Shravana pada 3 | Moon | Gemini |
| 7 | 290°00′–293°20′ | Shravana pada 4 | Moon | Cancer |
| 8 | 293°20′–296°40′ | Dhanishta pada 1 | Mars | Leo |
| 9 | 296°40′–300°00′ | Dhanishta pada 2 | Mars | Virgo |
Saturn rules Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and none of them falls in Capricorn. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Saturn has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Saturn. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Sun, Moon, Mars.
When Saturn Is Actually in Capricorn
Here is the honest answer, and it is a computed one: Saturn does not enter Capricorn at any point in 2026 or 2027. The DE421 ephemeris this site computes from covers those two years, and across the whole of it Saturn never crosses into this rashi.
The negative is worth turning into a measurement, because it is one. On 1 January 2026, the first day the tables cover, Saturn stands in Pisces; by 1 January 2028 it has reached Pisces, having gone round and returned to the same rashi. From Pisces, Capricorn is a further ten signs ahead — that is how much of the zodiac still separates Saturn from this rashi when the tables run out.
That is a property of orbital period rather than an accident. Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to travel the zodiac, so it spends roughly two and a half years in each sign and a two-year window can only ever reach a few of them. This page is therefore about the placement as a natal condition — what it means in a chart born with it — and not about a transit you can wait for.
Where Saturn does go in this window is worth knowing, and it is on the Saturn page; the monthly readings under our rashifal archive date every ingress it does make.
Saturn also combusts: within 15° of the Sun. A combust Saturn in Capricorn is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading Saturn in Capricorn
Saturn signifies longevity, karma, labour, servants, old age, iron, coal, and delay itself. In Capricorn those significations are filtered through a chara earth sign ruled by Saturn, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In its own sign the graha needs no permission from anyone; it delivers its significations directly.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Capricorn occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Saturn is reckoned malefic, and it gains in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th — so Saturn in Capricorn is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Capricorn is the 10th bhava, so Saturn in the 10th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Capricorn transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what Saturn does when strong and when afflicted, its 19-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Saturn (Shani) page. The short form: Saturn’s day is Saturday, its gemstone is Blue Sapphire (Neelam), its mantra is Om Shanaishcharaya Namah, and its deities are Shani, and Hanuman, who is held to control him.
