Saturn in Cancer (Shani in Karka)

Malefic · Water · Chara · ruled by the Moon

Saturn in Cancer is in an enemy's sign. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, and Saturn counts the Moon an enemy.

The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Saturn regards the Moon as an enemy, but the Moon regards Saturn as neutral. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means Saturn settles into Cancer more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.

Cancer is a chara water sign governing the chest and stomach, and Saturn is reckoned malefic, governing karma, discipline, longevity, hard work. Whatever Saturn signifies longevity, karma, labour, servants, old age, iron, coal, and delay itself — is what this rashi’s restlessness moves along.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Cancer: in an enemy's sign.
  • Saturn’s own signs: Capricorn and Aquarius.
  • Exalted in: Libra, deepest at 20°.
  • Debilitated in: Aries.
  • Moolatrikona: Aquarius 0°–20°.
  • Cancer’s lord: Moon. Cancer exalts Jupiter at 5° and debilitates Mars at 28°.

What Saturn Aspects From Cancer

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Saturn adds the 3rd and the 10thSaturn alone aspects the 3rd and 10th. Counting from Cancer, that lands on:

  • 3rd from CancerVirgo (Kanya), ruled by Mercury.
  • 7th from CancerCapricorn (Makara), ruled by Saturn. Saturn rules this sign, so it is aspecting its own house from Cancer.
  • 10th from CancerAries (Mesha), ruled by Mars.

Note the one that matters: at least one sign Saturn aspects from Cancer is a sign Saturn itself rules. A graha aspecting its own rashi protects it, and it is the strongest single argument for reading this placement generously.

How Far Cancer Is From Saturn’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Capricorn and from Aquarius, Cancer falls as follows:

  • 7th from Capricorna straight opposition.
  • 6th from Aquariusa 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
  • 10th from Libra, the sign of its exaltationa square, both of them kendra houses.
  • 4th from Aries, the sign of its fall — a square, both of them kendra houses.
  • Opposite Cancer stands Capricorn, ruled by Saturn — the rashi Saturn faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company Saturn Keeps in Cancer

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Cancer runs from 90°00′ to 120°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Jul 17 – Aug 16 — faces north, is classed female, and as a water sign is of the Brahmin varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Moon.
  • Exalts Jupiter at 5° — not Saturn, so the strongest single degree of Cancer is not Saturn’s.
  • Debilitates Mars at 28°, a different graha from Saturn.
  • Holds no moolatrikona. Cancer contains no graha’s moolatrikona stretch, so there is no privileged arc within it.

So Saturn shares Cancer with both an exaltation degree and a debilitation degree belonging to other grahas. A graha sitting close to either point is read against it, which is a reason the exact degree matters more in Cancer than in a sign carrying neither. Cancer’s own traits — nurturing, intuitive, emotional, protective, loyal — are the register in which karma, discipline, longevity, hard work gets expressed when Saturn sits here.

The Nine Padas Saturn Crosses in Cancer

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Cancer holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Punarvasu (pada 4), Pushya and Ashlesha.

PadaSidereal longitudeNakshatraLordNavamsa
190°00′93°20′Punarvasu pada 4JupiterCancer
293°20′96°40′Pushya pada 1SaturnLeo
396°40′100°00′Pushya pada 2SaturnVirgo
4100°00′103°20′Pushya pada 3SaturnLibra
5103°20′106°40′Pushya pada 4SaturnScorpio
6106°40′110°00′Ashlesha pada 1MercurySagittarius
7110°00′113°20′Ashlesha pada 2MercuryCapricorn
8113°20′116°40′Ashlesha pada 3MercuryAquarius
9116°40′120°00′Ashlesha pada 4MercuryPisces

Saturn rules Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and one of them falls inside Cancer: Pushya. Those degrees are the part of Cancer where Saturn is on its own ground regardless of what the sign lord thinks of it — a nakshatra lordship is a second, finer layer of dignity, and it does not have to agree with the first. That matters here, because it gives Saturn a foothold in a sign whose lord it counts an enemy.

When Saturn Is Actually in Cancer

Here is the honest answer, and it is a computed one: Saturn does not enter Cancer at any point in 2026 or 2027. The DE421 ephemeris this site computes from covers those two years, and across the whole of it Saturn never crosses into this rashi.

The negative is worth turning into a measurement, because it is one. On 1 January 2026, the first day the tables cover, Saturn stands in Pisces; by 1 January 2028 it has reached Pisces, having gone round and returned to the same rashi. From Pisces, Cancer is a further four signs ahead — that is how much of the zodiac still separates Saturn from this rashi when the tables run out.

That is a property of orbital period rather than an accident. Saturn takes about twenty-nine and a half years to travel the zodiac, so it spends roughly two and a half years in each sign and a two-year window can only ever reach a few of them. This page is therefore about the placement as a natal condition — what it means in a chart born with it — and not about a transit you can wait for.

Where Saturn does go in this window is worth knowing, and it is on the Saturn page; the monthly readings under our rashifal archive date every ingress it does make.

Saturn also combusts: within 15° of the Sun. A combust Saturn in Cancer is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading Saturn in Cancer

Saturn signifies longevity, karma, labour, servants, old age, iron, coal, and delay itself. In Cancer those significations are filtered through a chara water sign ruled by the Moon, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In an enemy’s sign they meet resistance from the host, and the results tend to arrive late or in a form the native did not ask for.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Cancer occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Saturn is reckoned malefic, and it gains in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th while it struggles in the 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th — so Saturn in Cancer is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Cancer is the 4th bhava, so Saturn in the 4th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Cancer transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what Saturn does when strong and when afflicted, its 19-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Saturn (Shani) page. The short form: Saturn’s day is Saturday, its gemstone is Blue Sapphire (Neelam), its mantra is Om Shanaishcharaya Namah, and its deities are Shani, and Hanuman, who is held to control him.
