graha in rashi
Jupiter in Cancer (Guru in Karka)
Benefic · Water · Chara · ruled by the Moon
Jupiter in Cancer is exalted — deepest at 5°. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, and Jupiter counts the Moon a friend.
The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Jupiter regards the Moon as a friend, but the Moon regards Jupiter as neutral. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means Jupiter settles into Cancer more readily than the host reciprocates, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.
Cancer is a chara water sign governing the chest and stomach, and Jupiter is reckoned benefic, governing wisdom, dharma, wealth, children, teachers. Whatever Jupiter signifies — children, teachers and gurus, higher learning, dharma, wealth, and the husband in a woman's chart — is what this rashi’s restlessness moves along. Exaltation is not a guarantee of a good outcome either — it says the graha is at full strength, and a malefic at full strength is still a malefic.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Cancer: exalted, deepest at 5°.
- Jupiter’s own signs: Sagittarius and Pisces.
- Exalted in: Cancer, deepest at 5°.
- Debilitated in: Capricorn.
- Moolatrikona: Sagittarius 0°–10°.
- Cancer’s lord: Moon. Cancer exalts Jupiter at 5° and debilitates Mars at 28°.
What Jupiter Aspects From Cancer
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Jupiter adds the 5th and the 9th — the trinal aspect, the most benevolent in the system. Counting from Cancer, that lands on:
- 5th from Cancer → Scorpio (Vrishchika), ruled by Mars.
- 7th from Cancer → Capricorn (Makara), ruled by Saturn.
- 9th from Cancer → Pisces (Meena), ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter rules this sign, so it is aspecting its own house from Cancer.
Note the one that matters: at least one sign Jupiter aspects from Cancer is a sign Jupiter itself rules. A graha aspecting its own rashi protects it, and it is the strongest single argument for reading this placement generously.
How Far Cancer Is From Jupiter’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Sagittarius and from Pisces, Cancer falls as follows:
- 8th from Sagittarius — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
- 5th from Pisces — a trine, the easiest of the distances.
- 1st from Cancer, the sign of its exaltation — the same rashi.
- 7th from Capricorn, the sign of its fall — a straight opposition.
- Opposite Cancer stands Capricorn, ruled by Saturn — the rashi Jupiter faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company Jupiter Keeps in Cancer
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Cancer runs from 90°00′ to 120°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Jul 17 – Aug 16 — faces north, is classed female, and as a water sign is of the Brahmin varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Moon.
- Exalts Jupiter at 5° — that is this page: the exaltation degree in Cancer belongs to Jupiter.
- Debilitates Mars at 28°, a different graha from Jupiter.
- Holds no moolatrikona. Cancer contains no graha’s moolatrikona stretch, so there is no privileged arc within it.
So Cancer carries a fixed dignity point inside it, and the closer Jupiter sits to that degree the more the reading is dominated by it rather than by the sign as a whole. Cancer’s own traits — nurturing, intuitive, emotional, protective, loyal — are the register in which wisdom, dharma, wealth, children, teachers gets expressed when Jupiter sits here.
The Nine Padas Jupiter Crosses in Cancer
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Cancer holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Punarvasu (pada 4), Pushya and Ashlesha.
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 90°00′–93°20′ | Punarvasu pada 4 | Jupiter ← | Cancer |
| 2 | 93°20′–96°40′ | Pushya pada 1 | Saturn | Leo |
| 3 | 96°40′–100°00′ | Pushya pada 2 | Saturn | Virgo |
| 4 | 100°00′–103°20′ | Pushya pada 3 | Saturn | Libra |
| 5 | 103°20′–106°40′ | Pushya pada 4 | Saturn | Scorpio |
| 6 | 106°40′–110°00′ | Ashlesha pada 1 | Mercury | Sagittarius |
| 7 | 110°00′–113°20′ | Ashlesha pada 2 | Mercury | Capricorn |
| 8 | 113°20′–116°40′ | Ashlesha pada 3 | Mercury | Aquarius |
| 9 | 116°40′–120°00′ | Ashlesha pada 4 | Mercury | Pisces |
Jupiter rules Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada, and one of them falls inside Cancer: Punarvasu (pada 4). Those degrees are the part of Cancer where Jupiter is on its own ground regardless of what the sign lord thinks of it — a nakshatra lordship is a second, finer layer of dignity, and it does not have to agree with the first.
When Jupiter Is Actually in Cancer
This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Jupiter occupies Cancer for 2 stretches inside 2026 and 2027:
- 2 June 2026 to 31 October 2026 — 151 days, after which Jupiter moves on to Leo.
- 25 January 2027 to 26 June 2027 — 152 days, entered in retrograde motion, after which Jupiter moves on to Leo.
More than one stretch is the signature of retrogression: Jupiter enters Cancer, moves on, then loops back across the boundary and re-enters. A chart cast during the second pass is not the same as one cast during the first, because the graha is moving backwards through the same degrees it has already covered.
Jupiter also combusts: within 11° of the Sun. A combust Jupiter in Cancer is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading Jupiter in Cancer
Jupiter signifies children, teachers and gurus, higher learning, dharma, wealth, and the husband in a woman's chart. In Cancer those significations are filtered through a chara water sign ruled by the Moon, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. At exaltation the significations arrive at full strength and largely undiluted.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Cancer occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Jupiter is reckoned benefic, and it gains in the 1st, 5th, 9th, 2nd and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th — so Jupiter in Cancer is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Cancer is the 4th bhava, so Jupiter in the 4th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Cancer transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what Jupiter does when strong and when afflicted, its 16-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Jupiter (Guru) page. The short form: Jupiter’s day is Thursday, its gemstone is Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj), its mantra is Om Guruve Namah, and its deities are Brihaspati, Dakshinamurthy, and Vishnu.
