graha in rashi

Jupiter in Leo (Guru in Simha)

Benefic · Fire · Sthira · ruled by the Sun

Jupiter in Leo is in a friend's sign. Leo is ruled by the Sun, and Jupiter counts the Sun a friend.

The relationship runs both ways: Jupiter counts the Sun a friend, and the Sun counts Jupiter a friend. A mutual reading is the simpler case — the graha and its host agree about each other, so the placement does not change character depending on which of the two is stronger.

Leo is a sthira fire sign governing the heart and upper abdomen, and Jupiter is reckoned benefic, governing wisdom, dharma, wealth, children, teachers. Whatever Jupiter signifies children, teachers and gurus, higher learning, dharma, wealth, and the husband in a woman's chart — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Leo: in a friend's sign.
  • Jupiter’s own signs: Sagittarius and Pisces.
  • Exalted in: Cancer, deepest at 5°.
  • Debilitated in: Capricorn.
  • Moolatrikona: Sagittarius 0°–10°.
  • Leo’s lord: Sun. Leo exalts no graha and debilitates no graha.

What Jupiter Aspects From Leo

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and Jupiter adds the 5th and the 9ththe trinal aspect, the most benevolent in the system. Counting from Leo, that lands on:

  • 5th from LeoSagittarius (Dhanu), ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter rules this sign, so it is aspecting its own house from Leo.
  • 7th from LeoAquarius (Kumbha), ruled by Saturn.
  • 9th from LeoAries (Mesha), ruled by Mars.

Note the one that matters: at least one sign Jupiter aspects from Leo is a sign Jupiter itself rules. A graha aspecting its own rashi protects it, and it is the strongest single argument for reading this placement generously.

How Far Leo Is From Jupiter’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Sagittarius and from Pisces, Leo falls as follows:

  • 9th from Sagittariusa trine, the easiest of the distances.
  • 6th from Piscesa 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
  • 2nd from Cancer, the sign of its exaltationa 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
  • 8th from Capricorn, the sign of its fall — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
  • Opposite Leo stands Aquarius, ruled by Saturn — the rashi Jupiter faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company Jupiter Keeps in Leo

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Leo runs from 120°00′ to 150°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Aug 17 – Sep 16 — faces east, is classed male, and as a fire sign is of the Kshatriya varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Sun.
  • Exalts no graha. Leo is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
  • Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Leo.
  • Moolatrikona of Sun, 0°–20°.

So Leo holds neither an exaltation nor a debilitation degree, which makes it one of the more neutral hosts in the zodiac. There is no fixed point inside it for Jupiter to be measured against, and the reading falls back on the Sun and on the pada. Leo’s own traits — confident, dramatic, generous, creative, proud — are the register in which wisdom, dharma, wealth, children, teachers gets expressed when Jupiter sits here.

The Nine Padas Jupiter Crosses in Leo

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Leo holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Magha, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni (pada 1).

PadaSidereal longitudeNakshatraLordNavamsa

2123°20′126°40′Magha pada 2KetuTaurus
3126°40′130°00′Magha pada 3KetuGemini
4130°00′133°20′Magha pada 4KetuCancer
5133°20′136°40′Purva Phalguni pada 1VenusLeo
6136°40′140°00′Purva Phalguni pada 2VenusVirgo
7140°00′143°20′Purva Phalguni pada 3VenusLibra
8143°20′146°40′Purva Phalguni pada 4VenusScorpio
9146°40′150°00′Uttara Phalguni pada 1SunSagittarius

Jupiter rules Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada, and none of them falls in Leo. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where Jupiter has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through the Sun, and through what the Sun makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Ketu, Venus, Sun.

When Jupiter Is Actually in Leo

This is the part of the page that is not in a textbook. Computed from the DE421 sidereal ephemeris, Jupiter occupies Leo for 2 stretches inside 2026 and 2027:

  • 31 October 2026 to 25 January 202786 days, after which Jupiter moves on to Cancer.
  • 26 June 2027 to 26 November 2027153 days, after which Jupiter moves on to Virgo.

Dates rather than clock times, because that is what a placement question needs. The ingress instants are computed and are printed on the monthly readings, where they matter for choosing a day.

Jupiter also combusts: within 11° of the Sun. A combust Jupiter in Leo is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading Jupiter in Leo

Jupiter signifies children, teachers and gurus, higher learning, dharma, wealth, and the husband in a woman's chart. In Leo those significations are filtered through a sthira fire sign ruled by the Sun, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a friend’s sign they are supported without being amplified — a quietly workable placement.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Leo occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. Jupiter is reckoned benefic, and it gains in the 1st, 5th, 9th, 2nd and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th — so Jupiter in Leo is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Leo is the 5th bhava, so Jupiter in the 5th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Leo transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what Jupiter does when strong and when afflicted, its 16-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Jupiter (Guru) page. The short form: Jupiter’s day is Thursday, its gemstone is Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj), its mantra is Om Guruve Namah, and its deities are Brihaspati, Dakshinamurthy, and Vishnu.
