graha in rashi
Moon in Leo (Chandra in Simha)
Benefic when waxing · Fire · Sthira · ruled by the Sun
The Moon in Leo is in a friend's sign. Leo is ruled by the Sun, and the Moon counts the Sun a friend.
The relationship runs both ways: the Moon counts the Sun a friend, and the Sun counts the Moon a friend. A mutual reading is the simpler case — the graha and its host agree about each other, so the placement does not change character depending on which of the two is stronger.
Leo is a sthira fire sign governing the heart and upper abdomen, and the Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, governing mind, emotions, mother, intuition. Whatever the Moon signifies — mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home — is what this rashi’s fixity holds in place.
The Dignity, Stated Precisely
- In Leo: in a friend's sign.
- The Moon’s own sign: Cancer.
- Exalted in: Taurus, deepest at 3°.
- Debilitated in: Scorpio.
- Moolatrikona: Taurus 4°–30°.
- Leo’s lord: Sun. Leo exalts no graha and debilitates no graha.
What the Moon Aspects From Leo
Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and the Moon has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Leo, that lands on:
- 7th from Leo → Aquarius (Kumbha), ruled by Saturn.
Aquarius is not one of the Moon’s own rashis, so the single aspect the Moon throws from Leo lands on Saturn’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.
How Far Leo Is From the Moon’s Own Ground
A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Cancer, Leo falls as follows:
- 2nd from Cancer — a 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
- 4th from Taurus, the sign of its exaltation — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- 10th from Scorpio, the sign of its fall — a square, both of them kendra houses.
- Opposite Leo stands Aquarius, ruled by Saturn — the rashi the Moon faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.
The Company the Moon Keeps in Leo
Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Leo runs from 120°00′ to 150°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Aug 17 – Sep 16 — faces east, is classed male, and as a fire sign is of the Kshatriya varna. Within those thirty degrees:
- Ruled by Sun.
- Exalts no graha. Leo is one of the rashis with no exaltation degree in it at all, so nothing gains maximum strength here.
- Debilitates no graha. No graha reaches its lowest point inside Leo.
- Moolatrikona of Sun, 0°–20°.
So Leo holds neither an exaltation nor a debilitation degree, which makes it one of the more neutral hosts in the zodiac. There is no fixed point inside it for the Moon to be measured against, and the reading falls back on the Sun and on the pada. Leo’s own traits — confident, dramatic, generous, creative, proud — are the register in which mind, emotions, mother, intuition gets expressed when the Moon sits here.
The Nine Padas the Moon Crosses in Leo
A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Leo holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Magha, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni (pada 1).
| Pada | Sidereal longitude | Nakshatra | Lord | Navamsa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 120°00′–123°20′ | Magha pada 1 | Ketu | Aries |
| 2 | 123°20′–126°40′ | Magha pada 2 | Ketu | Taurus |
| 3 | 126°40′–130°00′ | Magha pada 3 | Ketu | Gemini |
| 4 | 130°00′–133°20′ | Magha pada 4 | Ketu | Cancer |
| 5 | 133°20′–136°40′ | Purva Phalguni pada 1 | Venus | Leo |
| 6 | 136°40′–140°00′ | Purva Phalguni pada 2 | Venus | Virgo |
| 7 | 140°00′–143°20′ | Purva Phalguni pada 3 | Venus | Libra |
| 8 | 143°20′–146°40′ | Purva Phalguni pada 4 | Venus | Scorpio |
| 9 | 146°40′–150°00′ | Uttara Phalguni pada 1 | Sun | Sagittarius |
The Moon rules Rohini, Hasta, Shravana, and none of them falls in Leo. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where the Moon has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through the Sun, and through what the Sun makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Ketu, Venus, Sun.
When the Moon Is Actually in Leo
The Moon is the fastest of the grahas, so this placement is not a rare event — it recurs roughly every twenty-seven and a half days. Across the two years this site computes from the DE421 ephemeris, the Moon enters Leo 27 times.
Those visits are not equal, and the variation is real rather than rounding. The Moon’s longest stay in Leo is 55h31m, beginning 25 April 2026; its shortest is 48h10m, beginning 31 August 2027 — a spread of 7h21m. The cause is the Moon’s elliptical orbit: it travels slowest near apogee and fastest near perigee, so a sign it crosses near apogee holds it well over two and a half days, and the same sign crossed near perigee barely two.
Because the Moon changes sign every two days or so, its placement is the one thing on a chart that a birth time genuinely decides. For the day-by-day position see the daily panchang, and for what the Moon in Leo means as a birth sign, the Leo rashi page.
The Moon also combusts: within 12° of the Sun, which is why an Amavasya birth carries a weak Moon. A combust Moon in Leo is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.
Reading the Moon in Leo
The Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home. In Leo those significations are filtered through a sthira fire sign ruled by the Sun, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a friend’s sign they are supported without being amplified — a quietly workable placement.
This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Leo occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. The Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th — so Moon in Leo is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Leo is the 5th bhava, so Moon in the 5th house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Leo transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.
For what the Moon does when strong and when afflicted, its 10-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Moon (Chandra) page. The short form: the Moon’s day is Monday, its gemstone is Pearl (Moti), its mantra is Om Chandraya Namah, and its deities are Parvati, and Shiva through the Monday fast.
