Moon in Aries (Chandra in Mesha)

Benefic when waxing · Fire · Chara · ruled by Mars

The Moon in Aries is in a neutral sign. Aries is ruled by Mars, and the Moon counts Mars neutral.

The relationship is not mutual, and that is the most useful thing on this page. the Moon regards Mars as neutral, but Mars regards the Moon as a friend. The classical friendship table is asymmetric, which readers almost always assume it is not. In practice it means the Moon settles into Aries more warily than the host intends, so the placement behaves differently depending on which of the two is the stronger graha in the chart.

Aries is a chara fire sign governing the head, and the Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, governing mind, emotions, mother, intuition. Whatever the Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home — is what this rashi’s restlessness moves along.

The Dignity, Stated Precisely

  • In Aries: in a neutral sign.
  • The Moon’s own sign: Cancer.
  • Exalted in: Taurus, deepest at 3°.
  • Debilitated in: Scorpio.
  • Moolatrikona: Taurus 4°–30°.
  • Aries’s lord: Mars. Aries exalts Sun at 10° and debilitates Saturn at 20°.

What the Moon Aspects From Aries

Every graha casts a full aspect on the 7th house from itself, and the Moon has no special drishti beyond it, so the 7th is the whole of its reach. Counting from Aries, that lands on:

  • 7th from AriesLibra (Tula), ruled by Venus.

Libra is not one of the Moon’s own rashis, so the single aspect the Moon throws from Aries lands on Venus’s territory. Whose territory it is decides how the aspect is received.

How Far Aries Is From the Moon’s Own Ground

A graha is read partly by how far it has been displaced from the rashi it owns, and that distance is simple counting. Counting inclusively from Cancer, Aries falls as follows:

  • 10th from Cancera square, both of them kendra houses.
  • 12th from Taurus, the sign of its exaltationa 2/12, the gain-and-loss axis.
  • 6th from Scorpio, the sign of its fall — a 6/8 — the shashtashtaka relation, the most awkward of the twelve.
  • Opposite Aries stands Libra, ruled by Venus — the rashi the Moon faces from here, and therefore the one it aspects whatever else it does or does not aspect.

The Company the Moon Keeps in Aries

Dignity runs in both directions, and the rashi has its own roster. Aries runs from 0°00′ to 30°00′ of sidereal longitude — the arc the Sun crosses about Apr 14 – May 14 — faces east, is classed male, and as a fire sign is of the Kshatriya varna. Within those thirty degrees:

  • Ruled by Mars.
  • Exalts Sun at 10° — not the Moon, so the strongest single degree of Aries is not the Moon’s.
  • Debilitates Saturn at 20°, a different graha from the Moon.
  • Moolatrikona of Mars, 0°–12°.

So the Moon shares Aries with both an exaltation degree and a debilitation degree belonging to other grahas. A graha sitting close to either point is read against it, which is a reason the exact degree matters more in Aries than in a sign carrying neither. Aries’s own traits — courageous, energetic, assertive, impulsive, optimistic — are the register in which mind, emotions, mother, intuition gets expressed when the Moon sits here.

The Nine Padas the Moon Crosses in Aries

A rashi is thirty degrees and a pada is three degrees twenty minutes, so every sign holds exactly nine padas — never a round number of nakshatras. Aries holds 3 nakshatras in whole or in part: Ashwini, Bharani and Krittika (pada 1).

PadaSidereal longitudeNakshatraLordNavamsa
10°00′3°20′Ashwini pada 1KetuAries
23°20′6°40′Ashwini pada 2KetuTaurus
36°40′10°00′Ashwini pada 3KetuGemini
410°00′13°20′Ashwini pada 4KetuCancer
513°20′16°40′Bharani pada 1VenusLeo
616°40′20°00′Bharani pada 2VenusVirgo
720°00′23°20′Bharani pada 3VenusLibra
823°20′26°40′Bharani pada 4VenusScorpio
926°40′30°00′Krittika pada 1SunSagittarius

The Moon rules Rohini, Hasta, Shravana, and none of them falls in Aries. So across all thirty degrees there is no stretch where the Moon has nakshatra-level ownership to fall back on; the whole sign is read through Mars, and through what Mars makes of a guest it counts a friend. The nakshatra lords it does cross here are Ketu, Venus, Sun.

When the Moon Is Actually in Aries

The Moon is the fastest of the grahas, so this placement is not a rare event — it recurs roughly every twenty-seven and a half days. Across the two years this site computes from the DE421 ephemeris, the Moon enters Aries 26 times.

Those visits are not equal, and the variation is real rather than rounding. The Moon’s longest stay in Aries is 55h28m, beginning 22 August 2027; its shortest is 48h13m, beginning 14 May 2026 — a spread of 7h15m. The cause is the Moon’s elliptical orbit: it travels slowest near apogee and fastest near perigee, so a sign it crosses near apogee holds it well over two and a half days, and the same sign crossed near perigee barely two.

Because the Moon changes sign every two days or so, its placement is the one thing on a chart that a birth time genuinely decides. For the day-by-day position see the daily panchang, and for what the Moon in Aries means as a birth sign, the Aries rashi page.

The Moon also combusts: within 12° of the Sun, which is why an Amavasya birth carries a weak Moon. A combust Moon in Aries is read as weakened whatever the dignity above says, which is the standard case where the textbook verdict and the actual sky disagree.

Reading the Moon in Aries

The Moon signifies mother, the mind (manas), water, milk, the public, comfort, the home. In Aries those significations are filtered through a chara fire sign ruled by Mars, and the dignity above says how much support they get in the process. In a neutral sign they are neither helped nor hindered, which makes everything else in the chart decide.

This is not a prediction, and it cannot be one: the house Aries occupies from the ascendant, which of the nine padas above holds the graha, and the running dasha all change the answer. The Moon is reckoned benefic when waxing, and it gains in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th while it struggles in the 6th, 8th and 12th — so Moon in Aries is a different placement in each of them. Under Kaal Purush Aries is the 1st bhava, so Moon in the 1st house is the same pairing read from the bhava side, with the Aries transit dated for each of the twelve ascendants.

For what the Moon does when strong and when afflicted, its 10-year mahadasha, and the full remedy set, see the Moon (Chandra) page. The short form: the Moon’s day is Monday, its gemstone is Pearl (Moti), its mantra is Om Chandraya Namah, and its deities are Parvati, and Shiva through the Monday fast.
